OFFICIAL BOXING DISCUSSION

Had a VB 375 ml twist top and underneath the cap was a spiel about Jimmy Carruthers being the first World Champ to retire undefeated. He won the title with a first round KO against the then Champion Vic Toweel from South Africa. Its said that Carruthers threw 100 punches in the opening round and knocked Toweel clean out of the ring. I looked up Youtube and found this pretty ordinary quality clip - but wow - i believe the 100 punches bit.

Cheers for posting. He and Rose were my dad's favourites.
Notice how poor their defensive technique was back then. Still absolute warriors.

I'm old enough to remember seeing Rose and Famechon fight but Carruthers was a bit before my time. The step up in defensive technique between the times of Carruthers and Rose and Famechon is quite remarkable. Carruthers almost comes across as a bar room brawler compared to the other two.

My dad would have been 101 in August RIP.
Boxing was his only sport. He would talk about how tough new Aussies were, he and an Italian friend used to spar and do bag work in the garage when I was about 8. Sometimes got heated. When television first came to Australia the two used to watch the boxing and reminisce.
Carruthers name came up often, he gave a bit of hope to struggling Aussies post war.
 
For me can't beat Famechon he was great so defensive, his fight against Jose legra the Cuban champ was great.

Lionel Rose was great fighter too, beating fighting harada was awesome effort

I didn’t see the fight. I think Pacquiao won by ko? It was an exhibition bout to raise money forUkraine and the Pac-Man village project. Still got it at 44.
I can see the similarity between Pacquiao and Tyson. Both fight pretty much square on and both have power in that left hook.

Same here.
Curruthers a little bit before my time but still very famous when I was a kid.
Lucky enough to see most of Jeff Fenech and Jeff Harding fights ringside.

Australia produced many good fighters post ww2, particularly bantams and feathers. Russel Sands, Elley Bennett, Bobby Sinn. I was on leave from the army, walked into the closest bar and met, bought a few rounds for Bobby Sinn as he told me about how he almost beat Jimmy Carruthers. Great guy.
 
The Sands' brothers were Australian boxing stalwarts. Clem, Percy, George, Alfred..Russell.

Dave Sands was the 2009 Inductee for the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame Veterans category.
Indigenous lads have some ticker.
 
It was tragic about Dave Sands. Would have had a tough up bringing being born just outside of Kempsey at Burnt Bridge which was an Aboriginal mission at the time. Legend of a fighter who never really got to reach his prime.
 
I started boxing a few months ago and have really enjoyed it so far. I found a great local boxing gym with experienced trainers who taught me everything I needed to know. They gave me good advice on proper technique and the importance of using the right gear. They also helped me pick out the right gloves, wraps, headgear, and other equipment I needed to get started. My trainer recommended me to read an article about best boxing gloves and I decided to get the Everlast ones. Does anybody know a better brand of boxing gloves?

Good stuff mate.
Boxing is not a thug sport and it's people like you who need to show everyone that it's an artform not a backalley brawl. 👍
