Braith Anasta leads Greece to victory

By Terry Liberopoulos
at Mac Stadium, Budapest

Wests Tigers' Braith Anasta showed why he is a quality player after he led Greece to a 90-0 whitewash over Hungary at Budapest on Sunday.

Anasta piled on 46 points for the Greeks, who included eight players from the Greek Rugby League domestic competition. He scored four tries and kicked 15 goals from as many attempts, many of them wide out.

"I was really nervous before the game. I talked to my mum and brother before the game and I was emotional," said Anasta.

"To play for Greece was a proud moment for me, for my dad and grandparents. It was the first time I was in Greece and I loved it."

Greece took just three minutes of play to open their account when Sebastian Sell scored after a backline movement.

It was 12-0 after 10 minutes of play after Kristian Aroutsidis scored wide out. Anasta kicked the conversion from the sideline.

Terry Constantine scored two tries in three minutes, Mitchell Zampetides scored a brace and Anasta went over for his first of his four pointers as Greece established a 42-0 lead at half-time.

Anasta scored two quick tries early in the second half before Nake Ioannis, one of the eight players chosen from Greek domestic competition, burrowed over from dummy half to score in the 52nd minute. Anasta added the extras and Greece were cruising at 60-0.

Adam Bouris added two tries while Terry Conastantinou crossed for his third try of the game.

Sell scored in the 73rd minute and it was fitting that Anasta finished the scoring when he latched onto an intercept to score with two minutes remaining.

The positive to come out of the game was the way the local Greek players performed.

"The European and International Federation need to put resources into countries like Greece and Hungary," said Anasta.

"The passion for the game in Greece was incredible. They want to play Rugby League and we need to help them."

Greece 90 (Braith Anasta 4, Terry Constantinou 3, Mitchell Zampatides 2, Sebastian Sell 2, Adam Boris 2, Nake Ioannis , Kristian Aroutsidis tries; Anasta 15 goals) d. Hungary 0 at Mac Stadium, Budaprest, Hungary.
Referee: Radoslav Novakovic. Half-time: Greece 42-0\. Crowd: 1013.

My favourite part was when it was his first time in Greece when he was representing the country

interesting video on the tomohawks world cup campaign. i really hope they select more yanks next time, stupid schism between AMNRL and USARL causing a lot of this. there are several more players who are easily good enough to make the team and are truly from the country.

i believe 9 were born in usa, which is okay. rest are playing for heritage or american samoa links.

Who's comments are you talking about? Abraham is right - it's not a world cup game.

I liked the suggestion he's a quality player because he trampled over some poor Hungarians who have probably played under 5 games of league…

Well Braith's heroics aside, the best part of this was the inclusions of so many Greeks from the local competition. Hungary seemed to be all locals too but with Greece, Malta, Serbia and even Lebanon all having domestic comps there is a decent group of emerging teams in that part of the Med.

Im taking a wild stab and guessing its EODT's post hes referring to

Is everyone missing the fact that he kicked 15 goals in the match? Which makes me wonder why we persisted with Benji taking conversions every single game?

good on him for wanting to play in this game, as the article says his Dad and grand parents were very proud he represented Greece.
He wouldnt have been paid for the game, any motives for playing the game would have been good, (to grow the game, to respect his heritage or whatever)
Rome wasn't built in a day but if you want to grow the game you have to have these games.

For a long time in cricket, India were hopeless, than New Zealand, than Sri Lanke, these days all contribute to the cricket world….

It says many were kicked from wide out.

Why is he not our first choice goal kicker, we might as well get some value from him if we are going to keep him.

He certainly didn't look like a 100% goalkicker of late in the NRL…

Maybe that's unfair… Looking at the stats it seems he kicked 4/5 for us. Overall in the NRL he's 122 from 159 for a servicable rate of close to 77%.

My apologies Braith...

He probably was not doing much kicking at all due to his groin issue he carried from the Saints game onwards

Even Braith conceded at the start of the 2013 season he would be the No 2 kicker behind Benji

the conversion that braith hit for us that stood out was against the dragons. 12-0 down we score two tries. 12-10 to the dragons. and the commentator says he doesn't miss these ones too often. and he kicks it straight through to level the score.

obviously he was injured at 70minutes and we lost by a point. but he was the best kicker on the 2013 tigers roster most likely. but it's not like he had a lotta competition.
