if balmain won it would have meant that manly definitely would have won the wooden spoon. Wests might need to win their last game in nz now to avoid the wooden spoon

it also means Wests are only 2 points behind balmain ryde eastwood and balmain ryde eastwood got one more bye than Wests this year

im just looking at that side and im wondering how they havent won more games this year 😕

I don't understand what was going on there…
Manly are a BIG pack and monstered them up the middle a bit.
At one point (Maybe the whole game) fletch had 3 Fullbacks on???
Meaney, McKinnon and Mullaney. I know Means was playing centre,
But I wouldn't say he is a centre...
Moors had a good game, I'm hoping he get resigned to the top 25 now with
Payto and Dwyer gone.... i think he would go down really well!!
Created a lit of space at prop... Running out a little wider I think he would be
ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING!!!

meaney, mckinnon, mullaney are in the same side because of the stupid decision not to let any wt squad players into the wests magpies nsw cup team. it means you have 3 fullbacks in one team not playing their best position. some people only see the positives of having one nsw cup team though and not the negatives :unamused:

I'd say it has a bit to do with the fact there are a lot of them not playing next season. McKinnon, Mullaney, Fifita, Flanagan etc are all leaving and maybe losing some interest. I won't cop people bagging Fletcher over this either, mainly as I believe it is far from his fault. There are players there, Fifita in particular, who are letting him down big time, and unfortunately there aren't many alternatives until players return in FG.

But really, not saying that nobody cares about this, but the fact that everyone from this team that has gone into FG has fitted in well is a testament to having one State Cup side.

no i wasnt going to blame fletcher. he has normally gone well as coach. i think some of the players are not playing aswell as they could but even players that are leaving should be playing as good as they can. why wouldnt they want to win the nsw cup???

It is not just that Alien… I think we have as a whole overcompensated for not having a qualified 1sts Fullback since Hodgo. Now we have an abundance of options (Although not all of them good) We got McKinnon cos Moltz went down, We kept Mullaney in good faith that he would come along... But he hasn't, And I don't think he will. Effectively for 2 starting spots we have:
Meaney
Mullaney
McKinnon
Brown
Moltzen
NOT including NYC and the Guys that can fill in there.. B Ryan etc.
Next year, Mullaney, McKinnon and Moltzen will be gone.
HOPEFULLY... We will be left with Brown and Meaney, And with Johnny Grant coming in...
I believe we will have the Backs Covered.
On a sad note, Eshman played his last game for the season on Sat. He couldn't get anymore time out from the Army :frowning:
I was really liking where he was at, And would have liked to see him with a full year under his belt!!
He will be back next year, Although I am not sure a F/T contract is an option for him ATM??
One can only hope!!

There has been alot of issues this season no doubt.

First and foremost is the halves or lack thereof. The original plan for this season was to have either Lui or Moltzen running as a shadow halfback in State Cup but this, for whatever reason, never eventuated. Waters is really a hooker and not much as a halfback IMHO, he is solid but won't get you over the line in close contests.

The other main issues for mine are injuries to their squad and NRL, the retention choices in relation to some NYC graduates and the loss or some quality players both preseason and during the season.

Hopefully back high in the saddle next week

Unfortunately there has been no team Gelling or bonding together as in previous years. BRET are very ordinary this year.

They've definately Missed D.Gower up the front.. A.Schirnack has missed most of the year from Injury and 1sts.
I think they just need some time to come together as you say… The team needs a little re-structuring, It doesn't help that they have to find room for the remaining top 25 squad, Regardless of if they warrant it or not.
too many changes, FB playing centre, FB playing 5/8.... Just too much experimenting!!

Just looking at the NSW cup ladder… Unless Balmain loose by 50-100 And Maggies Win by the remainder then the top 8 is sorted. BRET will make the finals at 8th... I'd say they will be a flash in the Pan in Sept. as Canterbury are going great guns and come 1st week of finals will have a few players from 1sts available to them Re: Payne, Halatau, Stagg, Roberts etc. All of them would have played enough games in State Cup this year to Qualify i would think??
Canterbury.... 3 Straight I reckon!!

While Balmain will limp in in 8th spot for the finals their recent form had been abysmal and will only prove cannon fodder for their opponents.
Players playing out of position hasn't helped their cause, Mullaney at 5/8 when clearly Jack is a specialist and Meaney in the centres to make way for McKinnon, no wonder they can't gel.
I watched the game against Wentworthville on TV and listened to the game against Manly on the radio and it seemed to me that they could barely string a set of 6 together while the opposition threw the ball around with team work and we were just one out.
A disappointing end to year as I expected far more from the side when you see the talent in the team.
