NSW Cup: Tigers looking to stake top 4 claim
Balmain Ryde-Eastwood Tigers are staking a claim for a top 4 position in the NSW Cup following an entertaining 32-10 victory over the Manly Sea Eagles at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.
Winger John Grant opened the scoring in the 10th minute, crossing in the right hand corner after five eighth Tom Humble drifted across field on halfway before linking with Grant through a long ball and with space up the touchline, he had to much speed for the converging cover. Fullback Sean Meaney didn’t convert to leave the Tigers with a 4-0 lead.
Five minutes later Tigers’ second rower Josh Davis scored out wide after a solid defensive set gave them possession just inside their own half which allowed them to work upfield before halfback Nathan Waters spotted a small gap through the left hand centres and offloaded for Davis to charge through, brushing off a defender then going over untouched. Meaney couldn’t convert to take the score to 8-0.
With 16 minutes to go Tigers’ centre Jake Clarke crossed out wide after a chain of passes from Waters onto Meaney chiming into the backline drew in the defence and opened up the gap for Clarke to pour on the pace and prove too strong, taking a defender over the line with him. Meaney again failed to convert for a 12-0 scoreline.
Five minutes later Manly got themselves into the game when replacement James Cunningham scored under the posts off a neat offload close to the Tigers’ line. Halfback Liam Foran converted to make it 12-6.
With 5 minutes remaining in the first half, Tigers’ winger Gus Aiga crossed unopposed near the posts after they gained huge metres down the right hand side through Grant and centre Tim Simona , then spread it left 20m out from Manly’s line where lock Masada Iosefa chip kicked across field into open space and Aiga’s waiting arms. Meaney’s conversion gave them the Tigers a handy 18-6 lead at half time.
2nd Half
The Tigers continued to control the tempo after half-time and lock Jarrod Farlow scored out wide after 13 minutes of play, shrugging off a defender close to the line to plunge over. Meaney didn’t convert for a 22-6 lead.
With 18 minutes to go Tigers’ hooker Pat Politoni crossed out wide after Meaney spotted space up the middle of the field on halfway, made the inroad then offloaded cleverly to a surging Politoni who put on a good sidestep to evade fullback Scott Blanch 20m out and go the rest of the way unopposed. Meaney converted to give the Tigers a 28-6 lead.
Nine minutes later, Humble scored out wide after Simona retrieved a bouncing chip kick 20m out from his own line then evaded the trailing defence to sprint 70m up the right hand touchline before floating a pass inside to Humble in support and he finished it off. Meaney’s off day with the boot continued to take the score to 32-6.
With 5 minutes remaining Manly centre Michael Oldfield scored out wide after they got a scrum 20m out from the Tigers’ line and on the first tackle they put in a neat chip kick behind the defensive line which Oldfield retrieved in a jumble of players then used his momentum to go over. Foran didn’t convert for the 32-10 scoreline.
There were plenty of things to like about the Tigers’ performance this week and it seems like coach Paul Fletcher has the team starting to gain momentum at the right time of the season with 6 weeks left until the finals.
Next week sees the return of the Heritage Round double headers & the Tigers are on the road, heading to North Sydney Oval to take on arch rivals the Newtown Jets on Sunday 29 July at 12.45pm.
