Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor says star fullback James Tedesco’s comeback from a knee reconstruction is on track and that unless there are any setbacks he should be ready for the start of the competition.
“There are no guarantees about the exact date he’ll play, it was a pretty bad injury, but the way things are going at the moment I don’t see any reason why he won’t be ready for the start of the comp,” Taylor tells RLW.
“He may play a bit of a trial match, depending on how he is at that stage.”
Tedesco was hurt playing against Canberra in late June, when he rushed down to make the first tackle of the match and collided with Raiders five-eighth Terry Campese.
“He’s doing really well,” Taylor says. “He’s running again. He’s not in full training yet, but he’s not too far away. He’s very good physically, in relation to his fitness levels and stuff. He’s a guy who will get to the fitness levels required fairly quickly.
“It’s just about him getting to the point where he’s not favouring the leg that he injured. He’s just got to keep working hard on that, so that he’s not putting too much pressure on the other leg.”
Taylor says Tedesco has impressed him with his desire in one-on-one chats.
“He’s just looking for some luck and an opportunity to get back to his best footy,” Taylor says. “He’s one of those guys who everyone knows how talented he can be, but he’s just got to get some consistency going.
“We’ve got to establish that consistency in his training first, then we’re a chance of getting him on the field. He’s done everything really well, everything we’ve asked of him. The biggest thing is getting him to the point where both legs are as strong as each other.”
