I think this will be a poor decision. There isn't enough talent to sustain 16 competitive teams as it is.

There is enough talent to sustain 16 teams and still have a decent, competitive comp if the talent was spread evenly and teams were policed more stringently as far as payments outside the salary cap go IMO.

While ever people keep lamenting the poor Roosters being severely weakened with so much cap on the sideline yet still had Teddy Crichton Radley JWH Tupuonia Tupou Morris on the field all playing for ???? do the numbers - can't see the division of talent ever changing under the current salary cap system. Under the current system the Roosters will continue to strengthen their squad when they need to, by buying who they need while retaining a nucleus of the best players in the game.

A new Brisbane team as soon as 2023 is going to really set cat amongst the pigeons in the recruitment market. Signings for 2023 can start from November this year, so if the NRL is going to bite the bullet I can only guess the timing is intentional to allow the new franchise to immediately start recruiting.

It will make things tougher for Tigers because although we have a fair amount of cap space, a new franchise will have $13M of space. On the plus-side we don't have too many superstars to be plundered - you can only imagine a new Brisbane side will aim to feature prominent Queenslanders, and will also probably end up with a number of Kiwis who aren't necessarily bound to Sydney.

Wayne Bennett is almost assured / assumed to be coach? He certainly attracts talent.

I think Melbourne Storm will suffer most - they are the first club I think of when doing strategic recruiting from QLD and blokes like Munster and Hectic Cheese are obvious targets. Broncos will also see their juniors plundered.

I won't forget that when Titans entered the comp, they took Prince and Laffranchi, which whilst a modest number in an entire roster (a Top 30 would equate to just under 2 players from each existing team), those were players we really couldn't afford to lose. Prince was highly effective those first years at Titans, and Laffranchi was able to move closer to home, being from Northern NSW. Laffranchi went on to play 5 tests and 4 Origins after leaving Tigers, but his quality was already known to us and not a decision Tigers could control.

Agree 100%

This is all about Melbourne really because they are the current Brisbane team re recruiting juniors.

Longer term it's a plus for Sydney teams imo.

I will tell you one thing, Stefano Utoikamanu is going to be highlighted and in bold as a key recruit of whatever club gets the nod and his agent is going to be rubbing his hands together right now because of this.

So will a lot of other clubs come November next year. My advice, don’t get too attached to him. Think of him as on loan, like Harry.

sadly agree, I can't see us hanging on to him when the big clubs come knocking

When expansion teams enter in the US market they get to pick players from the current teams. Each team can 'protect' a certain number of players and they pick a set number of 'unprotected' from each team. Something like that would work better, imo, allowing the stacked talent at certain teams to be grabbed first. (as per https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/kraken/kraken-mailbag-how-will-the-nhl-expansion-draft-work-can-seattle-get-the-no-1-entry-draft-pick/). We have less teams, so it could be 2 from each of the 16 - giving them 32 players. All teams could then add a couple more to their rosters to match.

"The Dolphins" ?

The dumbest emblem in the comp. is the South Sydney rabbit.
The team name is the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
A rabbitoh was a bloke who killed, skinned and sold rabbits.
Those dummies need to work out whose side they're on.

Iike Saints. St George slayed the dragon.

They were actually known as the St George Dragon Slayers.

They slayed the steelers

Sure did, the bastards. Illawarra were always my 2nd team.

Instead of introducing soul-less new 'franchises' the NRL should grow a pair and instead concentrate on getting Illawarra and the Bears back in our game.

All comes down to the good old dollar these days. Bears and Steelers got done over massively, it was a disgrace. We might have a dud club to follow but at least we've still got one.

I bet the same would have happened to Tigers and Magpies had we merged with "bigger" clubs.

No doubt whatsoever. Parra/Balmain would've been just Parra these days and Canterbury/Magpies just Canterbury. For better or worse Magpies/Tigers is still kicking.

Parra would have always kept the Tiger emblem but colours would have been blue and gold
Canterbury would have done the dirty on Magpies like Manly did to Norths
All in all we are a good fit Tigers and Magpies

I think this is a pretty weak argument over all. How many Wests Tigers players have "weasled" their way out of their contract, and how many have honoured their contract? I think the count in the first column is 3, 4 if you include Ivan Cleary? We'd be up to, what 300 or so in the second contract?

Secondly, if indeed contracts "aren't even worth the paper they are written on", then so be it, it means we can potentially entice any footballer from any other side to weasle out of their deal as well.

Either way, you are better off having good players contracted to you than not.

Childish response. Certainly the future weasels will be vastly outnumbered by those who honour their contracts.

It's childish because nobody is suggesting there will never be another player that ever tries to exit a contract early. It's just far less common than players who honour their contracts.

Sadly, I think you are correct.

What is it that we have that makes us a destination club?

Can we assume that a year or two after this club there will be an 18th team, presumably Perth?

Good chance. I doubt they would want an uneven number of teams for very long. An extra team = an extra game a week = extra revenue. No way is there the depth for it though. There’s barely enough depth now.
