Buzz: Remember where you read this first … the NRL will be a 17-team competition with two teams in Brisbane by 2023, when the current broadcast deal expires.

There will be an extra bye each week to help with player burnout.

That is the mail your columnist has been getting in Perth, where the game’s powerbrokers have gathered for the Nines and a CEO conference.

The decision on expansion has to be made by July to enable NRL CEO Todd Greenberg, ARLC chairman Peter V’landys and commercial chief Andrew Abdo to take the new competition format to potential broadcasters.

The AFL’s already out in the market.

Poor attendances at the Nines over the weekend should end any debate about having a team from WA in any expanded NRL competition.

Another drink most likely...

I wonder if the 2nd brisbane team will get the same sweet arrangements that the first one gets.Somehow i doubt it very much

Hope they add two teams. Someone having a bye every week sucks

I can see them use the bye as an argument for looking after player welfare! I don't agree with it but I bet that will be their excuse for a weak expansion policy!

Same.. Would've thought that an extra game would be more valuable...

bad decision.....

if you want to broaden your base get a team from PNG or NZ......

PNG would’ve been the Go imo

Partially growing up in QLD, I just can't see a second team in Brisbane being successful in terms of attracting fans. No current Broncos fan will likely switch allegiances and most young new fans are likely to support the team their family has supported since the 80s....

A small crowd at the 9s?
What? 3k less than the world 9s that was in rugby league heartland with triple the population.
Very meek leadership.

Exactly. Not to overlook the fact that it was pushing 40° both days, the 1st day was on a Friday arvo when most people are still at work.
And the overwhelming reason for "poor attendance" is the undisputable fact that the 9's comp is a pathetic Mickey Mouse tournament that has little appeal to anyone. Who would pay upwards of $60 to go and watch that rubbish? Could barely stomach watching it on the TV in the comfort of air-conditioning with a cold slab of beer.
Normal NRL matches, Test matches and last year's Origin game have crowds that match other states.
Buzz is a sozzled imbecile that should have been sent into the ether years ago.
