Broncos 2015 = Balmain 1989

@jirskyr said:
I don't think Broncs lost it with their gameplan, they had relied on their flexible defence all year.

I think they got too tired, the Cowboys surged the last 20 and Broncos didn't have anything left when they had the ball. St George defended their way to the premiership in 2010: they beat us by kicking to the corners and defending the sets.

I also think that when it came down to trying to get the ball near the opposition's line at the end, Cowboys still had Scott, Tamou and Taumalolo going forward, particularly the later who had some massive carries. Broncos forwards struggled to work out of trouble, particularly with Blair and Thaiday as the match-ending props.

Sometimes footy plays out like tennis, you just need to hold your serve and hope your opponent gives you an opportunity on his. Cowboys held their serves in the last 20 mins, Broncos only dropped their last two serves, but it cost them.

Reed and Milford slid on Morgan for 79:50 of the game, no idea why Oates decided to come in hard on that last play and leave his winger, no way was Morgan going to beat both Milf and Reed to the line.

I was of the feeling that if extra time went 20 mins like in 1989, Cowboys would have finished all over the top of Broncos.

It was none of that imo. It all boiled down to Hunts tackle. If there is no spear tackle they probably hold them out easily. Then the dropped kick off was the nail in the coffin.

Has anyone raised the question if Hunt was on the take? I'm not saying he was, but two monumental mistakes back to back when the game was on the line seemed a little suss to me. And it isn't like there isn't a precedent for players betting on games or being paid off.

Balmain was a better team in 89 through year whereas I felt this was always going to be Nth Qlds year and happy I got on a few weeks ago.

There were similarities with both loosers two tries coming early one off an error.

But in this day and age with teams coming back late and with the Cowboys record in that regard Bennetts tactics were a failure. Surprised no one asked him that.

Felt the Cowboys got the raw end of the 10ms and Milfords late one on one strip was also a knock on as well as Boyds knock on.

I was almost thinking also that if Brisbane scored again with say 25 to go and led by 10 that would have forced Nth Qlds to cut loose and they may have done it easier.

But in the end channel 9 wanted Brisbane up there and got it.
Hardly a 5 day turnaround home games every 2 weeks the schedule was a winner for them and propelled a solid top 8 side into almost an unlikely premiership.

Doubt the Broncs will be back next year. This isn't the 90s.

They had it… They lost it
They could've really put it out of reach.... They were well on top
They stopped playing footy = suicide

Agree but I am glad Attacking football won again, NRL is such a sweet game when there is an attacking style not this boring defence style trend which is killing the game

I don't mind watching a quality defence hold out well orchestrated attacking gameplans.

There's room for both in the modern game.

They'll win it next yr. already have put money on them.

No certainties in this sport,we have all seen that many times before. They are a lot worse of a side without Hodges so they will have their work cut out to replace him next season. The unfair scheduling of their games re: Friday nights will ensure they make the 8 but that's the only guarantee.

Poor ol' Hunt couldn't find a hole to hide in.

Anyway the NRL got their second dream result. Who next year?

Sharks with a good halves pairing.
Warriors with a good one and nine.

Both good chances to get their first.

Titans, yeesh a ways away.

True…there was a semi final a few years back between Roosters and Manly which ended up 4-0 Roosters...was a grea game that one

As much as I despise Uncle Benny, another 10 mins each way would have been nice. Just so Cows could put another few trys on them.

As for the comparison to 89, nah I didn't see any penalty for using a defender as an obstruction..

If you don't talk about it you will never be desensitised to it. As therapy for watching Mick Neil head hit the line you watch JT trip over in the 05 GF after kicking downfield and leaving a gap for Benji. Have never seen it happen to him since.

Pretty sure you have to watch something in order to become desensitised to it.

That will never happen. Ever.

Ok can we talk about the Canberra Raiders in 1989

Some of us hoped that Canberra would win that day, nothing personal

Those wounds from 1989, even after all this time never heal!! Definitely the one that got away that day, especially after the 1988 grand final loss which made it even harder to take.

Which you had every right to do

I personally wouldn't go near the Saints side with a disinfected ten foot pole and a full protective body suit
