The Brisbane Broncos have unwittingly been caught using the secret weapon that has helped them to the top of the NRL table – peppermint oil.

Footage before the round seven clash against the Newcastle Knights show a number of Broncos walking up to a trainer holding a cup in the dressing room.

The players dip their fingers in the cup and then apply a strange fluid to the inside of their mouths.

The substance clearly isn’t a palatable potion with prop Josh McGuire seen gagging as he sticks his fingers down his gullet.

Winger Corey Oates, who bagged a hat-trick of tries against the Knights, is another left dry retching by the substance.

The vision immediately had viewers wondering what this new pre-game ritual the Broncos were employing.

However, the club have confirmed that they simply turned to peppermint oil to give their players a boost for the game.

The oil is thought to open the airways and allow players to breathe better throughout the match.

And considering the 53-0 thrashing the Knights endured at Suncorp Stadium, don't be surprise to see more players lining up for a dip of peppermint oil.

That's it I'm sending crate of Vicks VapoRub to Tigers this week. I don't know how it tastes but it certainly stimulates when applies to the chest.

Nothing new.
I was using Aniseed oil to stop my mouth from drying out during games 46 yrs ago.
That was in the days when we were told not to drink water before and during a game, as it would make you sick
And to eat oranges at half time.
It's a wonder half of us didn't die of dehydration
And that also applied to Rep games Flegg and Presidents cup. And lower grades with the District club
Trouble was that I always smelt like a licorice all sort
