Out-of-favour Wests Tigers playmaker Luke Brooks is itching for a return to the starting side after experiencing the first major demotion of his career.

Restricted to 76 minutes off the bench in his past three appearances, Brooks has found himself in new territory watching on from the sidelines before attempting to provide impact late in games.

Michael Maguire is likely to make changes ahead of the side's clash against Newcastle after a below-par effort in the loss to the Warriors on Friday night.

Maguire has plenty of squad depth at his disposal as he seeks a similar response to the bounce back from a poor loss to the Titans in round four.

Brooks, the 2019 Dally M halfback of the year, has found it tough to spark the side over the past fortnight in matches that have gone down to the wire.

"It's a different feeling for me and a hard one because you don't know when you're going on, it's a different sort of game," Brooks said.

"I'm not the first person to be dropped and it won't be the last. We're still playing, so I've just got to do my bit when I get on the field.

"It is hard, especially for a half to come in with limited opportunities you get with 20 minutes to go.

"It's what it is, I've just got to do something when I'm out there."

Asked if his recent demotion from the starting 13 was the wake-up call he required, Brooks conceded there were areas in his game that needed improvement.

"I probably wasn't happy with how I was playing," Brooks said.

"It's a good chance for me to look at my game and see what I can do to improve my game and get back in the starting side.

"A bit more consistency for me and just building that game plan and building pressure and stuff like that for me to get back in.

"Just working on stuff at training and you can go from there."

Brooks admitted Maguire's ruthlessness in making personnel changes this season had prepared the squad for further selection shocks.

Experienced halves Benji Marshall and Josh Reynolds have provided Brooks with encouragement during the uncertain period.

"If you look at when Benji got dropped and he got back in the side. You can take a bit from how he handled himself as well," Brooks said.

"They've both been through that. It's good to have them there helping me out. I've just got to keep doing my thing at training and get back into the side."

Imo Brooks has got 8 weeks to show why he should be our no7.
If there's no improvement we MUST shop him around.

Sick of hearing him talk about what he needs to do then go out and not do it.

Whilst I agree with this, you need him starting at 7, not coming off the bench after 60 minutes, then you can judge him fairly, I would drop Benji and slot Brooks in at 7 with the knowledge his career at the club is on the line

Has Brooks had a run with Reynolds in the halves yet ?
We have that many possible combinations I’m lost ?

Yes that's what I'm talking about when I said he should be given the rest of the year to show us if he's our no7 going forward.
But let's be real, he's had enough time already and he's underachieved imo.
I can't see much changing in 8 weeks

spin the chocolate wheel in the halves again

raiders,cowboys,bulldogs,panthers,souths then suspended

all decent efforts! we've found it the missing key is Reynolds! sign him up another 5 years

I am no Brooks fan, I would have moved him on years ago, but he is signed long term, so he has had his stint out of the team, get him back in and tell him as you said, 8 weeks to save your career here, and he should be paired with someone who is playing next year

i've thought his debut was a bit of a curse on us. No doubt he is talented though but just lacks some consistency.

Brooks has friends in the right places make no mistake , waiting for next article how it’s going to be his team ... News Flash the guy is struggling to get a starting spot hence the friends rolling out this article , it’s a bit embarrassing these fluff pieces TBH.

I am not sure why there is a fluffy article about Brooks the game was lost when he finally got on the field friday night.Hopefully it is just a smokescreen for the real carving that Madge is doing to the team this week.
Yes i feel Brooks needs to be back in the team it is the players who shouldnt be that should be the real story

Brooks seems to get a fluff piece every now and then. He just needs to back up what he’s quoted over time and he will be the equivalent of a decent half.
Looks like a duck
Talks like a duck
Needs to play like a duck

I hate these articles. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

I am sick and tired of players saying what they are going to do. Just do it, then you can brag about how good was to do it rather than how good it will be to do it.
