Wests Tigers trio Luke Brooks, James Tedesco and Mitchell Moses the next 'big three'
Date March 21, 2015 - 8:00PM

Michael Chammas

The term "big three" is used in sport around the world, but when it comes to rugby league it has been synonymous with Melbourne's trio of Billy Slater, Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk.

But as the curtain begins to close on the decorated careers of the Queensland and Australian superstars, stepping into the limelight and laying claim to the tag as the next "big three" are the baby-faced Tigers leading the joint-venture club into a new era.

Together, Mitchell Moses, Luke Brooks and James Tedesco – who played their first NRL game together in round one this year – will carry the hopes of the club for the next decade with their performances on the field and marketability off it.

But it almost didn't happen, with Tedesco last year agreeing to part ways with his close mates to sign a lucrative deal with the Canberra Raiders.

However, after a heart-to-heart with skipper Robbie Farah, and a period reflecting on the players he would potentially be leaving, Tedesco had a change of heart.

"Mitch and Brooksy were a big part of why I stayed," Tedesco said.

"It's not just our combination but my friendship with them. I probably told them first, along with a few of the other young boys, about signing with Canberra. They didn't want to judge and don't like to show too much emotion. They just said 'if that's what's best for you and that's what you want to do, then that's it'. In terms of footy and playing the best footy, that's the most important thing to me.

"Being here with them is going to be best for me and build my best combos and play my best footy. Going down to Canberra is a whole lifestyle change, living by myself and leaving my best mates here. Obviously I wasn't strong enough to go through with it. I'm happy I got the chance to stay. I'm very grateful."

When Tedesco was weighing up his future, Moses was in his ear trying to remind him of the possibilities on offer if he stayed at the Tigers.

"We thought that coming through we had a great crop of young kids and we felt we had a chance to do something special together at the club," Moses said.

"I said that to him. I was more than happy for him when he agreed to go but Farah pulled him aside and spoke to him and he finally got the message that something special is going to happen here."

When South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds was asked to talk about the talented Wests Tigers trio he will line up against on Sunday, he also made reference to the Melbourne Storm veterans, drawing comparisons to them and the Tigers' young brigade.

"They are future stars," Reynolds said. "You watch Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith – I think them three are going to be the next big three that come through. Brooks had a good year last year and won rookie of the year. He's started this year well, too.

"When Tedesco is fit and healthy, he's unstoppable. I was lucky enough to play City alongside him. He's a special player."

Greg Inglis described Tedesco as a "special talent", but acknowledged the role Moses and Brooks will play in the club's bright future.

"The Wests Tigers have got a lot of valuable players in their side," Inglis said.

"They are young, they are hungry and they are enthusiastic. You can see it definitely. You've got Moses, Tedesco and Brooks. They are young and they are hungry. They were pretty impressive last year and they'll be looking to make a statement this year."

While Moses was keen to play down how significant his relationship and combination with Tedesco and Brooks is for the future of the Wests Tigers, he admitted the success of the club hinged on their development.

"There's a big expectation on us but I think some people don't realise we're only 20 years' old and still have a lot of time to develop our game," Moses said.

"I think there's a lot of things we need to add to our game before we can really control this club. For myself, I still have to cement my spot properly in this team. We've bought Josh Drinkwater and Tim Moltzen is coming back, so I still have to do a lot to cement my position in the team.

"In our positions we have to control the team. If we can be half the players they (Storm big three) are, we'll go a long way to doing well in the competition this year. We've still got a lot to learn and if we can get through the next couple of years, I think we'll have a lot of success."

I think Moses is the most interesting TBH he's got that spark and it makes him hungrier, but still has the level head to call it the way it is. But never will back down in the mean time. Yeah Brooks is important but that will be through his calmness which has a proven track record…moses has to prove himself as a live wire..tedesco basically already has.

Whats promising about tedesco is his personality, saying you've been weak in an emotional situation is a huge endorsement of level headed person. That attitude lets the bigger things take effect because its not your way or the high way..which can be problematic and weve seen before ie benji and farah in the past. The personalities of your superstars are so important!! Think Barba, Ferguson, Carney or Lockyer, Smith, Slater

Honestly haven't seen anything to suggest Moses is our long term 5/8\. To be fair I was overseas for a large portion of his games last year but he's done absolutely nothing in the first 2 games this year. Tedesco is obviously a superstar in the making and Brooks has proven that he has the ability to become a very solid halfback. Just waiting for Moses to show the same class the other two have over the next 12 months

Getting a little tired of seeing these articles. Just repeating the same things.

Brooks and Moses also have a long long long way to go. Its way too early for these types of comments.

This quote is encouraging for all those who don't think Moses has proved he's our long-term five-eight. Sounds like he realises this as well which is good.

Moses will prove to be better than both Brooks and Tedesco - and they will both be good.
I don't know what you have been looking at if you can't see a special footballer.
Too many people think these kids will be superstars after only a couple of games.

Brooks to me looks the least likely. You can see it today. Moses makes few mistakes whereas Brooks makes a tonne of mistakes.

Time will tell and I hope they all come good but Moses to me looks the best prospect but Tedesco to me is already there.

Moses should become the dominant ballplayer, kicker and shot caller and Brooks should be his foil. Brooks is faster and has a better ability to break tackles so he's more suited to 6\. Moses is a more natural looking halfback, has a better pass and kicking game. As juniors it might have been different but it's the case now.

Moses definitely looks more solid but he hasn't been involved enough to see. I'd have Moses as our no 1 playmaker and Brooks or the guy in the 20's gets the other role.

Moses and Brooks just need to back themselves more and run the friggin ball !

Today Brooks lacked vision and confidence. He is not playing what is front him and not reading the play.Today our forwards were pouring up the middle but at no point did Brooks take advantage of our forwards progress.

I would seriously consider giving him a month in NSW cup to get some confidence, but I am sure they will not happen.

Our forwards today were great and our halves were poor

It's frustrating that Brooks is refusing to take on the line at all. His 1st 2nd and 3rd option all seem to be pass.
Moses today fell into the same habit. As young halves they should be taking on the line regularly. Opposition defenses are reading our play far too easily. Taylor needs to address this ASAP.

today just showed that all three have a long way to go before they reach the heights of their opposing numbers. i know its a bit unfair to compare teddy to inglis at this stage but our halves are way behind reynolds and keary.

This is 100% where we are at. The thing is though there has been plenty of noise regarding Tedesco being up to SOO.

Brooks, Moses and Tedesco need to improve by huge amounts.

Moses main issue at the moment is his slight frame.I love his competiveness but he is not taking the line on as he should and I partly fear that this is due to his slight frame against fully grown men.He will be better in 18 months when he has fully grown into his body.He has the smarts and the competiveness to make it and do well at this level he just needs time to grow both physically and also mentally(experience) so he can know the better times to take the line on or to pass it.

Ask me the question who will do better in first grade TeMaire Martin or Moses and this question is a tough one as I think Moses main edge is his competitive fiery nature but Temaire(sorry is that how you spell it?)is the more naturally gifted player.
