**As State of Origin looms, stats show Mitchell Pearce's form has taken a tumble**

NSW playmaker Mitchell Pearce is in the worst form of his career on the eve of State of Origin and ranks at No.15 among all regular halfbacks in the NRL this season.
While Pearce's off-field behaviour has raised doubts about whether his name will be read out by NSW Premier Mike Baird when the team for Origin I is announced on Tuesday, statistics provided by Sports Data suggest the suspended Sydney Roosters halfback cannot rely on his club form to retain the Blues No.7 jersey.
After helping the Roosters to the 2013 premiership, Pearce is enduring his worst season since making his debut as an 18-year-old in round two of the 2007 competition against North Queensland.
**Only Canberra veteran Terry Campese and Wests Tigers rookie Luke Brooks rank below him after the opening nine rounds, according to Sports Data's detailed "contributor value rating" system.** :wtf
If not for a starring role in the 56-4 round two defeat of Parramatta, in which his CVR was a season high 473.75, Pearce could rank even lower. On two other occasions this season, his CVR has been below 100.
Of the halfbacks vying to replace Pearce if he is dropped by NSW coach Laurie Daley, Canterbury's Trent Hodkinson is sixth and South Sydney's Adam Reynolds is eighth.
In a match-by-match comparison, Pearce has finished third on seven occasions and second twice, outperforming Reynolds in round two and Hodkinson in round seven.
Gold Coast's Albert Kelly has the best CVR among the halfbacks eligible for NSW and sits fourth behind Melbourne's Cooper Cronk (who will wear the No.7 jersey for Queensland), Warriors and New Zealand playmaker Shaun Johnson and Brisbane's Ben Hunt.
Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans, who will start on the interchange for the Maroons, is fifth, while another Queenslander in Parramatta's Chris Sandow is seventh.
Even St George Illawarra's Sam Williams, who is one of three halfbacks used this season by Dragons coach Steve Price, ranks ahead of Pearce, whose CVR per game compiled from more than 30 individual statisitics is 218.26.
Pearce's CVR last season was 336.33 last season and in 2012 it was 363.43\. His previous lowest was 231.21, in 2007.
It is unclear why the 25-year-old has slumped so dramatically from his No.4 ranking last season behind Reynolds, Cronk and Cherry-Evans. Unlike many players – including the latter pair, who played for Australia at the World Cup – he enjoyed a full off-season.
In nine appearances for the Roosters this season, Pearce has scored one try, had three try assists, one line-break, five line-break assists, 14 tackle breaks and eight offloads.
He has run the ball an average of four times per match for 32.33 metres and kicked 9.22 times per match for 288.78 metres, while making four kick errors.
Pearce has also made 165 tackles, missed 25, committed 10 errors and conceded five penalties.
Should Pearce be axed from the Blues side, it is likely to have repurcussions for Roosters five-eighth James Maloney as their combination at club level and his goalkicking were two of the main reasons he won the NSW No.6 jersey last season.
Maloney ranks fifth among all NRL five-eighths this season but is behind South Sydney's John Sutton and Canterbury's Josh Reynolds.
Sutton is second and Reynolds third. These two are sandwiched between Cowboys and Queensland five-eighth Johnathan Thurston, who is No.1, and Manly and New Zealand's Kieran Foran.
Of NSW's other five-eighth options, Gold Coast's Aidan Sezer is seventh and Newcastle's Jarrod Mullen is 11th.
