Brutal Reality - We lack talent

Some of you blokes sure are hard to please !
We signed the players that agreed to come to our club. Unless you all want to keep flogging yourselves with pillow talk of Rona, Mitchell, RTS, and any other random players names that we have a snowflake's chance of getting here . . . . . just be happy with who we have recruited. The options are few.
When talking about improvement to our team in 2018 . . . . please remove Moses, Teddy and Woods from the team in your head and see if we have improved.
If we have another shit year, we are used to it . . so no problem.
If we improve . . . great !!! the new recruits worked out after all.
It seems that many of you won't be happy unless we make the 8.
If you want to eat an elephant, best to do it one bite at a time !
Lighten up. If we don't see any improvement at the END of the season, sharpen the knives then.

I will give you a positive…the best time to be playing the Chooks is round one...will we win, probably not, but we will least have a chance

Thats a great point. Look at how much talent we had in 06, 07, 08 and 09 but didnt make the semis. And nuffs like the raiders with Tongue at hooker did.

I see a lot of heart in this team, thats a great start.

I do worry about Reynolds. On a 4 year big money deal. He may be a good bloke, and help us build a culture we're after, but he's signed as a star 5/8 and is already being shifted to hooker for a bit. If we have an 80 min hooker then what does he do?

Hopefully he kills it at 5/8 mate. He got stuck in a rut at the dogs the bloke has ticker he will turn things around. Really hope he doesn't spend too much time at hooker, you don't spend 750k on a hooker.

Do you remember our last hooker

Im sorry but am I missing something? We are in a rebuilding phase arnt we? Why would you even expect top 8 after the crap year we had last year?. I just want improvement. Better defence and a 10-11 spot will do me. Next year I will be looking at the 8.

As the vast majority of the squad are already signed up for 2019, I would hope that they are looking at the eight as realistic for this year.

I agree with you @formerguest. If we gel this year and look solid like we did at the end of last year ill be extremely happy. Added to this if our young up and comers continue to improve it will hold us in good stead for the years to come.

Man this forum is gunna be one hell of a place when we lose up to 5 of our first 5 games.

Don’t worry , guys and guyesses , we will hit the field running in Round 1, we’l be a bunch of brutal heathens on a mission from God to barbecue those plucked putrid poultry and show no mercy’ as they hightail it from wherever we’re playing.
Our forwards will put down those Goldilocks books that they’ve been read ing since Sat night and our backs will keep repeating over and over again that” our right defence doesn’t really stink “.

Ivan will keep the bus running, either to take the team to the club for a party, or to carry all of the players (who’ve been knocked cold from one of the Grubs hospital passes ) to thenearest infirmary.

With our off Season, We can’t lose.

Just when I was getting excited about this season….along comes the grim reaper from up north...geez GCT,get behind the team for once,it cant always be doom and gloom....
So what if the Sharkies trial wasnt that good, maybe Ivan can come up with something on opening night that might make you happy mate....

I’m hurt,
I delve into the happy juice ( nothing to do with Happ),and come up with a
Positive game plan to break our run of one loss, and I’m shot down immediately,

TT , you wound me, but I’ll forgive you , see what an understanding bloke I am.

I’ll still be there in front of the screen during Rnd 1, Screaming my head off probably ,

And waiting for the point in the game, where I usually throw the remote into the toilet, and vow to never watch them again. I,ll then realise that I’ve been watching Married at First Sight . I’ll
have another Southo and switch to the right channel, but after seeing the score , I’ll retrieve the remote and put it where it should be…....straight through the screen
How can I be more positive than that ?
Now where the hell did that bloody remote go to!!!

Mate couldnt agree more all the yelling for talent is laughable it hasnt worked for us due to our poor culture and work ethic. I remember Adam Blair having to go and employ a PT so he could push himself to the limit he thought he needed as he wasnt getting it at training. That should tell you all you need to know about our former effort and attitude. At least this year every player has mentioned how hard training has been compared to the past and everyone seems up for the challenge, theres competition for spots which we have NEVER had and we have a group of Mongrels. Packer, Reynolds matulino all add a bit of grit and nastiness

All style and no substance was the call. It had to change and this is the first stage.

We may lack talent, but the club taking two home games away certainly doesn't help our chances and we are a team that needs no handicaps.

IMO I think we will struggle for the first two months, just to many new faces to gell into a cohesive unit. After that if they can keep the attitude and morale high they should come home with a wet sail.

Man the Warriors are just a basketcase. Probably had the best spine last year next to Melbourne. RTS + Foran + Johnson + Luke. So lets focus on completing sets and playing it safe…. OMG. They could have benefited from Sheens/Haslier/anyone who can kind of coach. ... Yes they needed discipline, not a straight jacket.

Overall our culture needed to improve. Cleary's signings are cultural, notice he hasn't picked too many from one team. No more then 2 from St George, 1 from Bulldogs, etc. Yes a few from the Warriors, but over different years. Hopefully this means we will develop competition and a hard attitude.

In fact stuff the top 8\. If we get an awesome hard working team we could be like the next Cronulla. They were wooden spooners and gritted their way to the top.

It might not look like we have the talent to win the comp but we will do a lot better than the bookmarkers are predicting. For one simple reason….

Experience.

Over the past few seasons we have fielded one of the most inexperienced rosters in the comp.

Last year we were only above Newcastle (I think) as far as 100+ match players went.

Now with McQueen, Matulino, Packer, Reynolds, Benji, Taylor, Lawrence we will field a really experienced side. A few of those guys are 200+ game players.

Some of the younger guys like Brooks and Nofoaluma are now pushing 100 games and less glamorous buys like Mahe Fonua and Corey Thompson are up there too.

Experience counts for so much. Players that have racked up so many games are usually half decent (otherwise they would have been shunted to country footy) and have some mental composure in the close games.

I'm confident we're in for a good season.

"Brutal Reality - We lack talent"

Totally agreed. But we haven't signed "talent".

We have signed toilers. People like Reynolds, Packer and Thompson who are good footballers, not an X factor.
Talent is guys like Moylan, who we tried and failed to get. You blow your cap on them and your season depends on them.

Don't get me wrong, we need talent BADLY. If were a hope in the finals we need about 3 "Talented" players who can totally outshine their opposite players. The only person we have at the moment that even comes close is Marshall, great player but starting to wind down his career. (I love the guy but he isn't a ticket to the finals this year).

What we have instead is hopefully a team. People who can play together, back each other up and raise our bar. Does anyone remember when Wayne Bennett coached the Dragons? The Dragons roster barely had any talent, Hornby would be about equal to Reynolds, Soward was borderline washed up, Morris was a promising winger but hadn't done much yet, Beau Scott and Cooper were good Centers. But the team was ordinary. They all lifted and went from ok to Great players.

Once you get a good team, you then attract X factors for better money and you have a chance at the finals. Get your average players playing WAY above their pay grade, get people signing with you because they love your culture and training, then you start getting the talent you want.

Brutal reality. The Tigers needed a culture plan. We need team development and to do the hard yards.
