Bryce Gibbs

Another crowd favourite, Cronulla forward Gibbs, is expected to also bow out, albeit not on his terms. A serious Achilles injury limited the popular prop to only eight appearances this year and club officials are resigned to being without him next season.

"I think he probably will retire," Sharks coach Shane Flanagan said.

"I'm trying to convince him to play on but it's one of those things; if his head is not right there's no use making him play. We've got to move on. Next week when I get back I'll touch base with him and it will be no surprise to us if he does retire."

If he calls it quits Gibbs will join fellow forwards Ben Ross, Mark Taufua and Jon Green in retirement. The Sharks are trying to entice off-contract Rooster Luke O'Donnell in a move that Flanagan said "could happen with Bryce in or Bryce out".

Great fan of Gibbs but his body was gone 5 years ago.

O'donnell would be a good signing though i doubt his forgiven Fulton for the accidental wishbone.

O'Donnell is ordinary. He hit the jackpot in being picked up by a better- than -average team. He would struggle if he didn't have JWH, Moa, Kennedy helping him look good. Plus his brain is just an accident waiting to happen.

Going way off topic.. But out if curiosity is o'donnell the only first grade balmain tiger or magpie player left playing? He started with balmain didn't he???

Also o'donnell would be an awese pick up for one season with our young forward pack IMO

pretty sure he is the last Balmain/magpie man left, he definitely played a couple games for balmain in 99, can't think of anyone else who played for the foundation clubs. ..maybe an esl player still going

Hodgson ?? He not finished til the fat lady sings and what abut Glenn Morrison , is he still floating around in the ESL world ??

I heard earlier this year that WT are still back paying his contract. So why not make the most of it and get him back if he is genuinely capable of seeing out his last year at NRL

But if he retires, no one pays him out?

We dodged a bullet with Bryce, a very underrated prop and did wonders for our line speed before injuries hit. He's played bugger all games the last two years and don't forget we actually offered him to clubs due to behavioral issues. The boys club is gone, we should work on a new future and new culture with these young guys.

Are we still paying Bryce?? FMD! Our club is hopeless when it comes to getting caught up in this type of debacle. How many ex-players and ex-coaches are we still footing the bill for?

I look forward to seeing the the Sharks fall apart with Noyce back-loading contracts. They have a rapidly closing window for a title run

Weren't we backloading contracts well after Noyce left? Or was it that he started the ball rolling?

Everyone back loads contracts , its just a matter of making sure that these players we backload are worth it

We were well on our path to salary cap disaster by the deals put in place by Noyce before departing.

Humpty exacerbated the situation further.

Every club backloads deals but we did it in a way that meant we had no way of meeting commitments and remaining within the cap

IMO contracts should not be allowed to be back-loaded. If a player has signed a 5 year contract for $2.5 million then his payments should strictly be paid in equal instalments of $500k per season.
This would stop the rort of say Gasnier from a few years ago when he was reportedly playing for $70k or so and he helped the Drags win a premiership that season, there is just too much scope for dodgy dealings when players are being acquired this way by clubs.

If a club cannot afford to fit all of it's stars under the salary cap by paying their contracts evenly for the term of their contract then they have to let a few players go, tough luck. That way it would help spread the talent around between the clubs as well instead of the current situation where teams like the Rorters stockpile talent and (supposedly) have to deal with the consequences in the years to come.

How much was SBW supposedly playing for this season?…..probably $100k :unamused: :deadhorse:

Creative accounting at it's finest and shonkiest.

I'm no fan of Gasnier style rorts either. but massaging the cap should be allowed within certain limits.

I would like the NRL to investigate ways that clubs can, through either good management, junior development or financial acumen, put themselves in a position to prosper for a good number of years, instead of the usual examples where teams make the GF and are preceded to be ripped apart by cap restraints.

Although I guess Manly/Storm and to a lesser extent Brisbane are the exceptions to the rule in that they are usually contenders every year. Most teams seem to build well and fall after a year or two because of the cap, I'd like to see success rewarded more consistently.

How this can be done is the big question, would rewarding long serving players help, maybe a luxury tax like some US sports, relaxation of 3rd party deals etc.

Can see what you are saying LaT but the last thing we want is too see just a handful of the richest and well-connected clubs winning the premiership every year like in the Premier League soccer. I think one of the best things about the NRL is the fact that in the last 10 years or so nearly every team (if not all of them) have had a stint in the finals, equality is a great trait to strive for as a competition.

Teams usually get ripped apart after winning a premiership because teams pay massive overs to poach premiership-winning players, that will never change.

Rewarding long-term players is definitely the way forward. Clubs should get discounts for players that have played for them for 5 years, not the current 10 years, that is too long a time in a ferocious collision sport like ours where careers are normally short.

Clubs should also be compensated financially in some way for producing their own juniors and bringing them into grade, not just raping other teams' talent like the Roosters do continually. How often do we see talented juniors that never get the chance to play for the club that nurtured them?, they get tempted away by the highest bidder.
