Hey its me,
Can we talk about our home location and going forward where we want to be based in the future?
Something that has never sat well with me is how we basically have three home grounds (and another training one) in three geographical areas, one of which we leapfrog over Bulldogs and eels territory to access.
That aint how war and tribalism should be.
Just a bit of background to why this is:
On the back of the Super League war, Western Suburbs Magpies (based in the Macarthur but with tentacles in Ashfield) merged with the Balmain Tigers, formed at the end of the 1999 NRL season as a joint-venture club with former Balmain coach, Wayne Pearce, as coach..
The merged club entered the 2000 NRL season with a mix of both former Wests and Balmain players.
This ultimately brought two locations together!
The Inner West, but we also claimed the lucrative South central region of Concord to Homebush and the Macarthur.
Macarthur provide growth and islander players. Inner west has money and population.
We have been playing a complicated tag team game since.
But we feel like an airport tarmac club with three home games.
Its complicated because we have our soul at Leichardt, world class facilities in Homebush, which is still in the edge of our territory, and our junior pool at Ctown.
But I think we need to sever one and for me Macarthur has to go.
We still keep the junior partnership going, but the inner west is huge and we need to expand into Newtown, Marrickville and these places, even the cusp of Nth Sydney like Lane Cove.
This is a massive population area, with richer, white/asian families who have sponsorships and crowds. This is also easier to sell new recruits.
What sounds better?
'Hey Mr Cherry Evans, come play for us, live on the water at Rozelle, harbour views, cappuccino in the morning and Iron Cove park where your kids can roam free from clowns and kids'
Or:
'Hey Mr Cherry Evans, come play for us, we can set you up in Raby, lots of parks around'.
This is why the Roosters get players cheaply, they all want to live the Bondi life.
Balmain offers the classy life. It is our future. We expand and take the inner west and we become a powerhouse club.
We can even agitate the dogs territory and push them towards Liverpol and slowly take some of their passionate lebs from them. It helps when we have consistently been the most leb friendly club to players since our inception. Moses, Twal, Farah, Bajouri, Elias x2, Douiehi,Tannous etc.
But happy to here your thoughts.
