Captains challenge

If Butler had any balls he'd have penalised us for an escort and let us challenge it.

I hate to swear on this forum and I hate that it has crept in, so apologies to the mods whenever they've disappeared to, but there is no way to describe this other than a monumental **** up.
Mate you are so right, quoting your first line. I totally overlooked that.
and
kenny went to the bin for stomach tackle . Was sent for unnecessary HIA due to an illegal tackle . Not to mention Dearden eye gauge, watch the replay , it was all a pay back for a decent whack ST did on him micro seconds earlier, worst thing was they looked at and let it go , that’s an instant send off. Watch it guys ,you be the judge

Have you seen the NRL response. Its absolute total BS that some PR guy put out to limit the abuse :

An NRL spokesperson said: “The captain’s challenge was permissible in these circumstances. The captain can challenge decisions by the referee to stop the play.”

“Although the referee had blown his whistle to stop the game after the last tackle was completed as time had expired, he had not yet called full-time. The whole concept of the captain’s challenge is to make sure any decision by the referee that stops the game can be reviewed. To not do so would effectively deny a team the right to have an officiating error corrected on the last play of a game just because time had expired.

So apparently now you can challenge the ref calling the end of the game. Can't wait for a team down by a point and within field goal range challenging a full time call. Should be good for a laugh.
You can't challenge a call that wasn't made.

The NRL made that clear when teams were holding down, challenging and going for something that happened before that.

There is no defending this. There was nothing to challenge.

I agree with you. Its absolute nonsense for the NRL to say a call had been made. They are saying a call to end the game is challengeable. How farcical is that.

The rules are black and white. The escort call, right or wrong is irrelevant. There was no ground for a captain's challenge. Laurie caught the ball and the referee made no call. You cannot challenge tackle one.

There was no call to challenge. Any way you look at this it is erroneous and corrupt. And the fact that the referee, touchy and Klein in the bunker didn't know what is acceptable grounds for a challenge is a huge problem.

What we saw last night was a referee too scared to make a call that would result in a top team losing and the current wooden spooners beating them.

At the end of the day you cannot challenge a call that isn't made. Butler and Klein should never see first grade again for this.

It's absolutely disgusting and no one will care because it's the Wests Tigers

Imagine the uproar if this happened to Melbourne, Easts or Penrith...
This is exactly right. He’s walking around not knowing what to do. He thinks tackle, someone is in his ear saying player taken out. He’s cracking under pressure. Townsend says challenge? Straight away oh good an out and he calls the challenge. He should be dropped for life for showing he’s not up to it in that pressure moment.

We all should have known we’d get royally dudded by this at some point. Every time they make a rule change it seems to be to our detriment.

Since when can you challenge game over? The captains challenge rule, that only exists because the referees sometimes make mistakes, was just used in a situation it can’t be used, to undo the correct decision and replace it with the wrong one, which cost us the game…this rule has to go
It’s a stupid rule. Have always thought that. Is there another sport in the world that you’re entitled to challenge on the most minute of indiscretions?

I think it has some merit in a try scoring situation, but as for having the ability to have a whinge over just about any moment in play, it’s a bit of a joke.

Can you remember the first golden point fiasco when souths scored in the 8th min of the first half.

I mentioned that in another thread. Tigers v Souths at SFS in 2004. Adam MacDougall ran for 486m. The tigers threatened legal action to have the result annulled but didn't follow through and the nrl said oh well.

In the same season, Brisbane lost 2 points for having an extra player on the field against the tigers but the decision was later reversed. The nrl has always been a contemptible organisation.

100% agree with this. Watching the replay, you couldn't say it was accidental. Blatant eye gouge and the bunker had plenty of time to review the footage. He should have been marched, but we weren't even awarded a penalty.

Looks like legal action is the only way -- and we could even have a leg to stand on:

After the referee blows the single whistle, 21 seconds pass before Cowboys captain Chad Townsend requests a challenge.

“A time limit of 10 seconds will apply to initiate a challenge from the point that the referee has signalled and verbalised the decision made,” the rules state.

The Tigers will argue a decision had not even been made for Townsend to challenge.

Butler doesn’t ask the bunker for assistance. There is no audio of him communicating with the bunker until they speak to him.

Under the NRL rules, a challenge is only permissible, “in instances where the referee makes a decision that results in the match recommencing with a structured restart”.

The Tigers will argue that wasn’t the case. They will argue that the only stoppage in play that allowed for the challenge was the whistle for the conclusion of the match, therefore the game was over.

The rules state that a structured restart includes the following: scrum, penalty (tap restart, penalty kick into touch, penalty goal attempt), sixth tackle handover, 20m restart, goal-line drop-out, general play handover, 40/20 or 20/40 restart.

The point is the NRL has agreed that the bunker made an incorrect decision.....what happens next, surely the score before that decision should hold then .we win 26-25
