Carney on the piss - different piss this time

When you consider the high ratings of moronic shows like 'Man Vs Wild' and 'Hamish & Andy's Gap Year Adventures' where these idiots do a myriad of gross things on national TV and everybody seems to love it, is it any wonder Carney & co do what they do sometimes.

The general public is gleefully obsessed with stupidity and gross behaviour when it's presented on TV or at the movies, but when a footballer or someone famous does the same thing "it's disgusting"! Still wouldn't want Carney here cause he's an imbecile, but just putting what he did into modern day social context.

This isn't an isolated incident and has been dealt with accordingly. This was an alcohol related incident which carney has had a few of already… This is a person who is representing a club who are in the search for sponsors to pay big money to help their club out. A club who are already struggling due to a number of factors but mainly due to the lack of a major sponsor.

He is being paid to be a good footballer, to bring crowds to games, to boost member numbers and to help gain sponsorship money for the club. Unfortunately due to this incident sponsors will be less likely to want to help out the sharks whilst he is still on their books. They have made a business move to ensure the survival of their club. No player is bigger than the club. After his previous indiscretions the sharks would have created a tight contract ensuring that if he was to bring bad press to the club and potentially harm the clubs ability to gain sponsorship money then they would be well within their rights to sack him... This is understandable with carney's track record and is not about giving him second chances, it is about protecting a product/business.

So if you missed channel 9 news, Weidler explained the photo. A mate of Carney's took the picture of him and passed it onto his brother who apparently lost his phone at the races. I'm not sure if the brother did lose it or he in fact passed it on but is trying to get out of responsibility for the photo getting out. I feel both are about as plausible as each other.

Either way I still don't understand why he should be sacked. It's not illegal and while I wouldn't do it myself, he has harmed no one else. Therefore why should it be anyone else's problem to have an opinion on.

It seems we live in a world of angels who have made no mistakes and are free to judge and pull down everyone around them. Todd needs help and probably better mates around him. Mates that are concerned with Todd's welfare and just aren't there for him while he's earning good money. The only people we should try to be better then, is the person we were the day before. Sometimes as don't achieve that but i think we shouldn't stop trying.

The crux of this whole issue is that Todd carney leads a life in a goldfish bowl and the public image of his employer is extremely important.

For what it's worth, something in a contract doesn't have to be illegal for instant dismissal: eg; in my line of work I am subject to random drug and alcohol tests, even though the only machinery I operate is a computer! It's not illegal for me to go out at lunch time and throw down a few pints but if I get tested when I go back to work it's the sack because that's the contract I signed.

Unless cronulla is banking on a diuretic company becoming major sponsor, the media attention this has garnered is very bad for business (regardless of the actual context, as it is the sensational, shocking things that attract attention and stick…instead of being that guy who won the dally m that year he will now forever be remembered as the guy who...).

If Joe Everyman has the same thing happen then only the usual side effects are in play.

But that is the whole thing: nrl players are subject to public scrutiny and often harsher penalties than everyday people (eg; losing your job).

I'm not being sanctimonious and to be honest am not overly disgusted by it, nor am I judging him.
What I am saying is that Carney has a public profile and as such wasn't as vigilant as he should've been and is now paying the price.

Did anyone see his actual interview ??

He certainly took a pot shot at Steve Noyce

Noyce was CEO at the Roosters when he was sacked and obviously CEO when he was at Cronulla

Here's my next question Would Noyce have still been CEO at the Tigers when Carney (and in particular his Mum ) were making lots of hints and noises that they wanted him to come to the Tigers ??

Pretty sure it is a Yes

Just asking a question , no conspiracy theories behind it OK

Is it all that different to Beau Ryan walking around with his d€¥k out on the Footy Show????

All this is true, but legally the Sharks would be on pretty shaky ground if their case is, effectively, "we sacked you because we don't like the look of your leisure activities".

Compare this with your alcohol thing: if your contract says you can't be under the influence of alcohol at work and you've consented to being breath tested, you're bang to rights if you fail a test. But what's Carney actually done here that contravenes his contract? Clearly not drinking: there's no actual proof he even was drinking, not to mention the fact that if they could have punted him for being on the sauce they'd have done it months ago. "But come on - you must have been pissed" is not going to stand up in court.

So, once again, it comes down to one or both of the act itself being worthy of sacking or the fact that the image was distributed being worthy of sacking. I'd suggest that a man urinating on himself is his own business UNLESS he goes out of his way to publicise it, either by doing it in public (and there are no reports of any other witnesses to this event) or by being complicit in distributing the footage. And, again, if Carney says he either didn't know or didn't agree to the photo being taken or distributed then I reckon he's got a good case for wrongful dismissal.

If we're talking about Carney damaging the image of the Sharks and the NRL, then surely those responsible for taking the photo and then, more importantly, posting it should be banned as well?

What would they get banned from? Do they play for the Sharks or any other NRL club?

well given the extra news of "a mate of Carney's and his brother's lost phone", there's not much else that can be done here. Unfortunately for Carney, he's the only one the Sharks and the NRL can do anything about.

yeah fair point, with this in mind, it would seem to be an overreaction.

It's not like Carney posted the picture himself or distributed it himself.

So if it wasn't something he wanted distributed why get someone to take the picture ??

Carney's looking for someone else to blame

So far he has blamed his mate and Steve Noyce

Funny how he isn't blaming his own lack of accountability for his actions

Yeah his mate

Who then gave his phone to his brother and he lost it at the races according to Carney

This actually occurred two weeks ago

I'm surprised by the number of people who say he shouldn't be sacked!!! Was what he did such a disgraceful act??? Of course not, just a bloke being stupid, and not worth the outrage it has generated in social media. But Todd would have had the consequences clearly laid out to him. The game has become so saccarine sweet and precious and will not tolerate such an action. Is that right or wrong? Don't matter, it's the way it is. Todd would have known that. He would have known straight away he would have been sacked. So would have all his team mates. Like I say, it was just a stupid lark, but everyone knows the NRL won't tolerate such action. And let's face it, he has had plenty of chances.

The offensive thing in the whole matter will be if another team is allowed to sign him. Cronulla shouldn't be punished while another team profits from his undoubted talents.

PS. His mate is a total knob.

Well said "owley girl" he's been given so many opportunities and chances but has never really changed his ways. Never learned from his mistakes. Hope this time he does. Wont hold my breath thou…

he was given THREE chances by the sharks alone. He's blown 2 of them, this one was the third strike. Luckily the NRL/Sharks kept the first two under wraps.

Then yeah, pretty dumb to ask his mate to take a photo and it would seem unfortunate circumstances for the phone to get lost, then found by someone else who though it would be a good idea to upload the photo.

Carney didn't upload it himself, just dumb to have an actual photo of it taken and now he's really paid for his stupidity.

Still think it's a bit harsh…........the Sharks saying this brings the game into disrepute is a complete joke really, so taking drug enhancements doesn't? They boot Carney for bringing the game into disrepute, but the Sharks are still a club?

UK clubs close door on signing Carney
By Ian McCullough, AAP
Updated July 1, 2014

UK Super League clubs Hull and Warrington have ruled out making a move to sign Todd Carney following his sacking by Cronulla.

Carney's immediate future in the NRL looks in grave doubt after the Sharks became the third club to dismiss the 28-year-old following the publication of lewd photographs of the wayward playmaker on social media on Sunday. A move to the UK appeared to be his best short-term option of staying in rugby league given NRL clubs cannot recruit players for 2014 after June 30\. But with Huddersfield failing in their attempts to sign him after his sacking from Canberra in 2009 due to visa problems stemming from a criminal conviction, clubs are understood to be reluctant to take on government red tape. Warrington boss Tony Smith - the brother of Carney's former mentor at the Sydney Roosters Brian Smith - said he had no interest in signing him. Hull FC football manager Motu Tony said he was an admirer of Carney and although the club are in the market for a playmaker, it's unlikely they will make a move for the 2010 Dally M Medallist. "It's a shame for the lad with what's happened as I watched him on Friday against Brisbane and he went pretty well," Tony told AAP. "I can't really say that we want to sign him because we are already too far down the line with a couple of other players.

Outspoken Salford owner Dr Marwan Koukash, who made no secret about his desire to sign Benji Marshall after his departure from Super Rugby, has already ruled out making an approach.

In 2011, Carney had discussions with French club Catalan Dragons - who were then coached by Sydney Roosters mentor Trent Robinson - but he opted for a move to Cronulla. But a move to the French club is unlikely after Scott Dureau was offloaded to the Roosters on Monday to make way for Carney's former Canberra teammate Sam Williams.

So, why don't you "unwrap" them here for us? Assuming you have any idea at all.
