CHANNEL 10's newly appointed chairman Lachlan Murdoch and his chief executive James Warburton are set to make an audacious bid to snatch the NRL broadcast rights from Nine.

The Daily Telegraph can today reveal Ten has dramatically ramped up its interest in the game in recent months, so much so that it is already working out budgets to televise all eight matches per week.

Until recently, its interest had been confined to high-rating Friday or Monday night matches - but that has changed. "We want it all," said one Ten source last night.

NRL chief executive David Gallop confirmed last night that Murdoch and Warburton had indicated a stronger interest than just one game a week in recent negotiations.

"That simply confirms the conversations we've had with James Warburton and Lachlan Murdoch in recent weeks," Gallop said. "If you're running a network and there's the possibility of getting your hands on over 30 weeks of high-rating cross-demographic content, you would be mad not to be interested."

The NRL is banking on a $1 billion payday from its next broadcast deal, which expires at the end of this year.

Gallop has long advocated the game would be willing to break up the television rights in order to bump up the value of the next deal.

It is understood Seven remains keen to broadcast State of Origin, although industry insiders said it has not discounted the idea of showing more matches.

Ten had appeared to lose interest in rugby league last year when it announced dedicated sports channel One HD would shift its focus to entertainment to take on Seven's digital channel 7mate.

But it is understood Ten has now gone so far to start discussing possible commentary line-ups and production schedules to accommodate being the No. 1 rugby league broadcaster.

Murdoch, who was appointed chairman of Ten earlier this week, knows that Ten desperately needs high quality content on his network. There is also enormous pressure on the newly formed ARL Commission to strike a $1 billion-plus broadcast deal.

Chairman John Grant revealed last week that negotiations with current rights holders Nine and Fox Sports had started on February 1.

"Subject to our legal obligations, we would certainly consider breaking up our packages," Gallop said. "We are in exclusive negotiating periods with our incumbent rights holders but subject to that we are obviously interested in the other possibilities."

Ten remained tight-lipped on the network's interest in the rights last night. "We look at all sports rights as they become available," the spokesperson said.

if it means that the foundation cup is televised live then im all for 10\. if it means that sunday footy is live then im all over 10.

The more live fta games the better.
Ten won't be affraid to broadcast games or related programming through its digital channels either.

Yes I hope Ten wins the full rights…stick it up 9 and Foxtel!

I would certainly be concerned at watching every game of footy full of commercials! Mind you if Fox lost Rugby League then I will cancel my subscription.

I hope they get it, :::9 is horrrrrrrrrrible, I hate them, and the commentators.

Especially Brad Fittler, he has to be the biggest air-head I have ever listened to. He may have been a great player but he is painful to listen to

As a Pay TV subscriber I hope Foxtel retain their current rights, only if they pay what it's worth. Mind you, I have Fox for the EPL, A-League and overseas cricket as well as Rugby League.

I'll be happy to pay an extra $10-$20 a month to ensure the game I love is getting the most out of it's product. I'd like to see Ten or One get the rights just to show channel nine that the product will not be treated with contempt anymore.

Fox won't lose their rights. It would be a massive disaster for them - so many of their top rating shows are NRL games. They would lose a lot of subscribers…

As long as seven doesn't get it Can you imagine Bruce McAvaney as a head commentator …...... 😱pen_mouth:

I am looking for the icon where I can hoist a rope around a tree and my neck

Good on channel 10, the more competition for the rights the better it should be for rugby league and besides, channel 9 could do with some competition on free to air.

Definitely, if 10 gets the rights, that's a lot of league on free to air. If they don't get it, you'd think whoever got it just paid a lot more than they may have been expecting. Whatever happens, you'd think we should end up with more than 3 free to air games.

They wont get them all….and rightly so.
Theyre an unknown provider at this stage...channel 10 at times to me seem quite amateur in a lot of things they do, a bit below 9 & 7 in the TV business.....sometimes the devil you know is better.

Imagine if they got the lot but the broadcasts were crap?
Hard to cop FTA games now after getting used to ad free PTV

I wouldnt care if the broadcast was crap if all games were free to air

Channel 9 are pretty amatuer themselves, how long have they been broadcasting cricket for? Yet today they still managed to miss the first ball of the Aus v India ODI :roll

I would love it if 10 got the rights if they are going to broadcast all games on free to air tv that would be awsome ( as I don't have foxtel ) now that Lachlan Murdoch is now the chairman of 10 look for 10 to make a big play for the rights and give 9 a run for their money GO 10 !

Anyone, but Nine! It would be nice to have a whole new commentary team. Hopefully one that doesn't carry one like a bunch of morons during games lol. Although I have to agree with Happy in hoping the rights never go to Seven - Bruce (I know every trivial detail about every sport and sportsperson) McAvaney would be unbearable!

No they didn't

I don't think people have even considered that if 9 lose the rights, 10 will most probably poach 9's commentary team, or some of them anyway

It seems like Ten will have a serious play at this… Isnt James Packer also on the Ten Board?

I agree with Yoss... Fox will lose way too much by not agreeing to terms on RL.

I wonder if the IC is focused on dollars or better exposure of the games?

Yes, they did!

When the coverage came back from the ad-break the 2nd ball of the match was just hitting the keeper's gloves.
