Chris Lawrence and injuries

I agree with Joby, I was convinced that Lawrence was destined to become a Tigers great, I've hardly seen a player debut so well, so early, and keep the form up. I don't know if it was the hip or hammys or both, but he was very seriously injured in our service and that should always be remembered.

**He's not a crap footballer or a lost cause, any more than Simon Dwyer or Tuiaki are failures because they were seriously injured playing for the Tigers.**

And that's the real sad part. Tuiaki to this day is a cult hero. Dwyer gets the "what could have been treatment, meanwhile Rowdy gets the "he's crap, he's a cripple". If the hip injury ended his career, he'd be considered the biggest waste of talent in the club's history. He'd be remembered as being on par with Tedesco. Unfortunately, his injury has clouded the judgement of many who can't stand him. The other 2 will live in people's memories of being remembered fondly and warmly while Rowdy is destined to be belittled and disrespected. And that's very unfair.

I find it impossible to believe that people can't stand him(Sadly some do)

The vitriol this year has all been directed at Moses, Teddy and most of all woods (deserving). Maybe I am wrong but have not noticed any bagging of Lawrence at all at the games this year. Could supporters be realising that this guy personifies loyalty and dedication.

The biggest problem with fans bagging Lawrence is that they remember the player he was pre 2011, anything less is not good enough.

He has made the move to the second row where he is going great! Still got the old bad game in him, but let's be honest the "superstars" in our team have hardly set the world on fire this year!

Lawrence is the only player qualifying for long service allowance, so he's not included in the cap. Costs nothing, strong defender, looks after Brooks, runs good lines off the ball, did I mention he costs us nothing?

If he is not included in the cap how does he get paid?

Long standing player allowance (8 years) of 300K can be allocated to 1 player or among a number of players..Chris is the only player we have that qualifies..

There is also the 600K Marquee Player allowance outside of the Cap that may be paid by Club affiliated sponsors ..again to 1 player or spread among a number of players..

Firstly I love the guy and remember the good times well, but here is where I get confused. He is on roughly 300k after renegotiations but is not part of the cap? So knowing the club has run at a loss and we not attract TPAs, where does his 300k come from?

General revenue such as sponsorship, membership, merchandise sales, ground attendance, ANZ payments or Ashfield club grant. Take your pick.

Not sure what you mean…The Salary Cap and any allowances are part of a Clubs Operating expenses...It is largely covered by the NRL grant that all Clubs receive..

So I guess...Operating expenses...

The point I think people are trying to make as Lawrence's contract is covered by the long serving player allowance it allows the Club to allocate more of the Cap to other players..the spend in the end is still the same...

Its the old saying you cant keep a champion down.congratulations Chris most tries for the Wests Tigers always plays well thats all you can ask.

Exactly right. He has kept playing after an almost career-ending injury because of his love for footy and the Tigers but you people are trying to punt him to the kerb despite him being a club legend. Some fans

Marshall is a good example. Early in his career he was on another level. Later on people began to hate his guts because he wasn't half the player he was early on in his career. He's still considered a legend. Some would class Tuiaki as a club legend too, So why isn't Lawrence? This has nothing to do with him being a nice guy. That's a cop out from his detractors. Its acknowlwdging he was on track to being top 5 of players the club has ever produced, maybe even top 3\. That's how good he was. And he has struggled ever since. But he has a legitamate excuse, unlike Marshall who just went off the boil and is considered probably the no 1 player in the history of the club.

Thats simple to answer. Benji brought us success, whereas Chris bravely plodded for 2/3rds of his career.

Lawrence is a quality first grade player. On the edge he is great.

Not against good sides with premiere edge players. He goes ok against players like him.

I never said he was the best edge player in the comp. He is though a quality first grade player.

You said he was great on the edge. I dont agree. He is adequately placed but our pack isnt complete moving forward until he is no longer a part of it.

Did Farah is his final years with WT draw the same benefit - it seems not. Why not?

Stryker - I disagree. He is exactly the type of player that rounds out a squad. He is more than a decent player plus he is a quality person.

Our pack is fine with Lawrence out there if you spend the big dollars on quality players. Our problem is that we've spent big dollars on Woods who should be on Lawrence dollars.

Who cares if he did? It's just salary cap mechanics. They get paid their contract, it's not like it matters if some is from long-serving allowance or marquee allowance, it's all just money in the cap. Don't worry your precious obsession wasn't cheated out of a dime…

We'll agree to disagree then. Id hope for better backrowers than him moving forward.

I got the impression that Chris' salary was exempt from the cap as he has 8 years of service notched up and that Robbie also had 8 years notched up so his salary could be exempt also. Is it a total of $300K or $300K each player.

The post also shone light on how the back-ending occurred. Sheensy wanted to go out in a blaze of glory with a few more Grand Finals under his belt - but My Precious Obsession copped the blame years later.
