Classic commentary

After the Laurie Daley pearls of wisdom thread has now slowed to a walk we need a new section where people can post commentary gems from such meatheads as Tallis, Gasnier, Lewis etc….. Gordie will fill pages on his own, pretty much anything that sprouts out of his gob is moronic sewerage.

Gasnier in the WT vs Raiders NYC game a few weeks back: he was getting all excited about the close finish to the game and he mentioned more than once how excited he was to see golden point....until Matt Russell eventually had to tell him that there is no extra time in the NYC! What a goose.

I don't know if you can call this classic commentary, but…

In years to come, we will tell our children (unless we already have them, in that case, Grandchildren) of the days of the legendary Channel 9 commentary team. We will tell them of a better time, when instead of commentating the game, Phil Gould would gather the boys in for a circle jerk.

Too true. But Ray Hadley would have to be the king of that caper…..was it last week during WT v Eels that he gave a detailed rundown of every single type of lolly that Fittler had brought with him into the commentary box? All the while the game is actually in full swing. That was as bad of a slap in the face for our season as anything IMO.....it was friggin disgraceful.

How about Tim Gilbert commentating in the U20 grand final last year (or was it reserves)? Player going for the conversion but misses. He says it goes over the black dot. The other commentators pay him out, to which he replies that he wasn't watching. Fantastic commentator! :unamused:

Heard tonight on 702… The team that makes the grand final will win??? WTF... No one else has a chance as far as I know

If you're after some classic commentary of a different kind, and you have a recording of the parra v broncos game from tonight, skip to around 42 mins.

Fatty says "that was as soft as ice cream". Ray Hadley says something like, "thank, god I thought you were going to say something else", at which point Wally Lewis can be heard to say "blue vein" in the background and laugh to himself.

Hadley laughing at josh mcguire's injury tonight. How does he still have a job?

They all need to be put out to pasture at Nine. Hadley's incessant ranting about topics other than footy during the middle of a call makes me want to kick my television in.

Mate ,it's not the TV's fault ,save it for when you meet Hadley in person :roll

Loved the Moose!
With thanks and apologies to numerous sources:

"if I keep getting Boyd and O'Grady mixed up, it's because they look alike, especially around the head"
"tiny, diminutive, little Mark Shulman"
"he seems to be favouring a groin injury at the top of his leg" (a favorite!)
"now the referee's giving him a verbal tongue lashing"
"I don't think the male genitals or the female genitals should be rammed down people's throats … to use a colloquialism."
"He's made a great yardage of 25 metres."
"Son of a very famous father"
"A little bit marginal"
"Very mobile running"

My favourites growing up were probably The Moose ,Darrell Eastlake and Billy J Smith

I don't think you guys would of heard Billy J Smith too much ,but he was a host of the original Its a Knockout

Probably one of the most casual commenators I have heard

Radio wise David Morrow and John McCoy would be the best

For those of us old enough to remember, the one and only Frank Hyde on radio, and Graham Hughes was a good TV caller that would put most to shame still.

Anyone remember ..it's long enough..it's high enough…

If it's straight, it's there…but he's missed it! lol Ah good old Frank - he was the best.

Sunday night footy on Channel 7 with Rex commentating always made for great comedy  And who could forget 'Won' Casey - don't think he actually called the matches, but hosted World of Sports on Channel 9 and had a League program on the radio. Hot head, opinionated loud mouth - worse than Rex even.

Haha, yeah you have got some golden Rex there! I used to hate the bloke and his biased commentating (he seemed to hate Balmain for some reason) but he definately was an original and good for some monumental stuff-ups.

Just watching the Dogs vs Drags game on Fox from 2002 and Brett Kenny is commentating….christ, I had forgotten just how much of a dribbler he was behind the mike.
It is amazing to think that some of the best players the game has ever seen are absolutely the worst commentators in world sport: King Wally, Lockyer, Johns, Fittler, Kenny, you just can't get much worse than those gibberers. Never used to like Gary Belcher as a player but he is one ex-player who is a good commentator, him and Sterlo are passable.

You forgot Steve Mortimer! He was diabolical.

Most of you would be too young to remember Rex Mossop's classic commentaries.

I was watching an old Manly v Parra game on Foxtel the other week. A Manly player lost the ball in a contested ruck (back in the days when you could strike for the ball) leading the Moose to blow up and say "He should be beaten for that!"
