Concord Open Training Session

A very wet training session just finished up at Concord Oval.
Most of the players participated in the full session.
David Nofoaluma didn't participate in the whole session and was worked through his paces one-on-one.
Things I took out of session
1) Mitchell Moses looked good and is a competitive bugger in just a game of touch footy.
2) Mania Cherrington looks a very handy player and should get a chance through Origin
3) Martin Taupau is bloody fit for a big fella and kept up with the backs in he running drills. Almost ran Moses down
4) Not sure if Andy Fiagatusa picked up an injury but had knee heavily strapped
5) Funaki still has some way to go especially fitness wise
6) In the final drill I saw, Kev Naiqama took the place of Nofoaluma on the right with Lawrence & Simona and Richards were on the left
7) it was bloody wet

Looking forward to big years from Akauola, Sue and hopefully Liolevave can make the step up.

Interested to hear the thoughts of other fans who attended the training session.

Anyway was good to get down there and see the fellas have a hit-out.

Thx Den

Im jealous, stuck here in the office, I think I would rather be in the rain.

We collectively need to ensure that our expectations are kept in check and give the club and the new coach time and support to make us competitive in the next two seasons.

Fiagatusa's knee was strapped at Campbelltown session as well. You're right I'm sure as well Cherrington will get a run this year. He's so much more dynamic than Luani

Thanks Den

Can I just confirm that you said that Simona and Richards were left side ??

My other question is Brooks ??

Is he solely playing one side of the ruck or playing both ??

I was there and saw pretty much the same. A few points I noticed:

* lodge, santi, Rowe, milone and brown were all absent

* naquaima, taupau and halatau lead the fitness drills. Funaki, brooks and peni were miles behind everyone else

* the first choice left side attack seems to be brooks/Siro/Simona/Richards. Right Moses/sue/Lawrence/naquaima (obviously nofo injured)

*tedesco has put on a lot of upper body size. He was obviously favouring the knee though. Moltzen on the other hand looked tiny, although was running much freer

* hoeter and McDonnell were training at fullback with all the other guys injured. Hoeter looked very good, McDonnell terrible. Everytime he was rushed he would drop the ball or throw a wayward pass

* it was pouring rain however Lioveleve dropped a lot of ball. It may have been an off session but he was poor

* Buchanan was heavily involved and talking lots in the defensive drills. Looks like he has put on size too. Wouldn't be surprised if he sees more time in firsts this year

Going off training my guess is round 1 will be:

1\. Tedesco/hoeter
2\. Richards
3\. Simona
4\. Lawrence
5\. Naquaima
6\. Moses
7\. Brooks
8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway
11\. Sironen
12\. Sue
13\. Halatau

Happy, another article has quoted Brooks saying last year he was on the left but this year is different. So my guess would be he is moving around.

Would love to see Taylor brush this modern day approach of left and right halves. Get the videos out of the John's brothers and Walters and Langer, that's how halves should run teams and play what they see.

Yep bring the Boss call back and let our halves play what they see in front of them KS sounds fine to me

Yeah Brooksy got left behind in the running drill.

Agree FF, Buchanan was very enthusiastic.

At the end of practice Nofa, Teddy, Moltzen were watching on, any idea who the other two on their knees were?

It was also good to see Fulton around handing out posters to the fans.

While some of us have to work how many fans turned up in the dispicable* rain?.
We actually need the rain the other side of the Great Divide whereas you city folk don't need rain as you've got that fandangled desalination thingo that still hasn't been switched on!.

I attended the session with my two daughters and they had a great time meeting the players afterwards, who to a tee were very polite and welcoming. It would never get a mention in the papers but they were just brilliant and my young girls could not wipe their smiles off their faces even today and they have their favourite players with them as screen savers on their phones and the home PC and IPads.

I got to speak with Simon Dywer who said he has had slight improvement in his arm
( not good enough to play) shame shame shame we could do with him.

In regards to the team training I thought Moses looked sharp as did Tapau who also looked very fit. They looked happy together which is a good sign and JT was calling the shots out in the middle even accounting for the weather.

The weather was ordinary and this kept the crowd to about 100 people.

Didn't attend as I wasn't in Sydney but a few things standing out from other posts:

-Brooks being extremely unfit

-Liolevave dropping a lot of ball

-Buchanan looking a lot more involved this year, will be a nice depth player esp. in origin (hopefully).

-Seems like Brooks is playing a bit more on the right

Any comments on these points?

Probably wouldn't look into it too much…

Neither would I

Interesting that Sue is training on the edge rather than in tight. Has he played as an edge backrower in firsts? Taylor must see something in him as a line runner.

You'd have to think it is a defensive move rather than a penetrating edge runner

I can live with that , defence wins football games

I couldn't give two tosses if we won 13 games winning them by scoring 16 or less

agreed. i'm guessing JT realises that halatau is probably best at 13 and that sue can really help our edge defence (read: centres/halves)
