This is just purely me guessing...but the SMH story journo is very reliable, and if you look at the timeline his unhappiness is around Origin time....

Where it is likely players mentioned their own conditions / compared it to us...and also he was overlooked for the games whilst Saints, Knights, Sharks players all went in ahead of him...even Tariq Sims, who had a horrible year.

It is well known those camps and officials basically crap on the Tigers / ex players rave about how much better things are away from us.

Just a guess, but I'd be surprised if they don't line up. Matterson is NOT Mitchell Moses. He comes across as very grounded, but def wants to reach his max potential.

He was teammates with Tedesco last year. I wonder if he crapped on us last year. Matterson still signed regardless.

He signed for Cleary though.

Madge is not popular for whatever reason. The Souths leadership group all sung the praises of Seibold the very moment he started and loved Bennet. None of them speak highly of Madge, except when being polite.

I am not defending Matterson...or pretending to know what is going on. Just trying to piece it all together.

IMO he was our best player by a MILE this season and is absolutely elite. That 272 plus meters + 40 tackles game not long ago v The Dogs ( where everyone else was flat and a winnable game was lost) showed pretty clearly he is a level above everyone else we have.

Clubs notice those games. Blokes who run for 270 and make 40 odd tackles = everyone wants.

Can anyone honestly say Jai Arrow is better? And he is gettiing enormous offers.

Matto should be captain and on a great deal....BUT if he wants out, then obviously can't be captain and we are in a bad place.

The whole thing is a crying shame to be honest. We have lost so many elite level players the past few years and only added one, who now wants out seemingly.

Lote Tuquri said it was best thing that could happen to this club when we signed Maguire. He played for both clubs, the Broncos and the Wallabies. Pretty good credentials when assessing a quality coach.

Lote played one year and lied about retiring so that he could avoid the pre season 🙂

Lote was washed up by that stage and given a rails run to a premiership, so of course he'd be happy.

Unless you have inside info, a psychic, or a journalist who speculate about everything, not sure how you know so much about what the South's players think and when they are "just being polite." It seems that Maguire's tough task master tag leaves plenty of scope for assumptions in my view.
Apologies If you are more informed than what your post suggests.

G'day @Newtown: I think I just heard on the radio where Newtown defeated the Bears, congratulations.:fa-smile-o:
If you change one word in your post, I feel your post will be more meaningful.
Ie change...control...for manage.

@MAGPIES1963 Hi Magpies, the last time Newtown defeated the Bears in a Grand Final was in 1943. That was a first grade grade final and I am sure that Frank Hyde was playing in one of the teams.

I'm actually surprised there aren't more players whinging about Madges tough stance on training etc. Our club hasn't exactly earned a reputation of being a team full of hard nuts and the same goes for mental toughness too. Madge is shaking things up and I'm with the coach. He has won premierships and knows what it takes. If you don't like it, too bad, you signed a contract. Madge is the boss, no one else. Our reputation really needs to change or else our club is doomed.

If this is only about money then an upgrade and an extra year should do the trick. If however its more about Matterson not wanting to be here which is the way it seems to be building then the club needs to take the hardline. He is here for 2 more years, if he shows the same level of performance as this year then go with the upgrade. If he wants to dog it he can sit in reggies on 350K along with the other bludgers we have there. The club needs to start showing players and player managers they are not the soft touch they were in the past. Hopefully it really is just about more money.

Matterson in 2016

Every week has seemingly vindicated his decision to leave Parramatta only one year into a three-year deal, the Eels’ well-documented woes exceeding any pain felt by the struggling Roosters.

“I wanted to play first grade and I knew that opportunity at Parra wasn’t there,” Matterson said.

“I knew I had to look elsewhere. It’s been an awesome move — so family-oriented and so welcoming. It makes you want to play well because you’re so happy playing football.”

Bugger. Sounds like Ivan all over again. We can't get better value for money from anyone at $350k. Even getting paid by another club for that much doesn't help our cap, we would need a player swap of like a $500k or $600k player for Matterson, and the other club pays the difference each year - but that ain't going to happen.

Reserve Grade then if this is legit, we have no choice. Any if this is legit, then anything less and the decision maker should step down. Be it Board coach whoever,

I am not sure that Matterson would be a happy camper with Packer in Reggies as well. I am not too sure that the clubb would be happy, especially from a financial and CAP point of view. Two highly paid very capable players playing at half pace would be disastrous

Haha ...
Serial whinger

Piss him off /cash our way !

Yep there is probably a lot more to him leaving the rorters. Considering we always hear the rorters never let anyone go that they want to keep. Its just that they don't allow their dirty laundry to be aired in the media

The back-ended contract ban seems to have a lot of wiggle room.

"In really broad terms what we are not going to allow is a contract to come on the table for $200,000 in the first year and $600,000 in the second year. We are just not going to allow that to happen anymore," Greenberg said.

https://www.nrl.com/news/2018/11/14/nrl-changes-rules-to-restrict-back-ended-contracts/

Instead of just offering more money we could offer an extension with performance bonuses. Making SOO, team makes finals, total running meters, average number of errors. It makes it very hard to manage a total salary cap but we need to be smarter about contracts and retention.

My take on this sort of stuff is you can’t pay much attention to the initial feeding frenzy from the press as every ego fuelled journo tries to prove he has the good oil. If the story is garbage the journo vultures quickly move on to their next carcass but if they hang around and stories continue - there’s usually some truth to the story. This one is not going away imo.

Is he worth more ...yeah most likely..
But he’s just going to have to suck it up (just like WE all have too) until our cap spending becomes more surplus !

Man $350k plus an extra 4 weeks holiday each year ..
Sign me up lol

I understand that - and they would be there under different circumstances. One doesn't want to be here and thinks he has been dudded, the other doesn't want to leave and thinks he has won the lottery. My point is we have to draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough. No more rubbish signings ala Packer and no more bowing to players who sign on and then want out. It won't just be the club and the player who is unhappy, but i'm also sure most supporters wouldn't be too happy either. However its the old adage of short term pain for long term gain.
Or we can just keep bumbling along as we have done for the last 8 years.

@diedpretty Matterson is still under a Wests Tigers Contract. I really hope he hasn't been lured by much greater offer from a club such as Roosters which the NRL has made immune to CAP and brown paper bags rules which other clubs have to meet. Wests Tigers have had a gutful of players which still under contract resorted to lies or feigned excuses to abscond from the club and move to clubs offering much richer pickings.

Two very recent examples come to mind;

1. Mitchell Moses - still under contract with Wests Tigers but when he was refused movement to Parramatta lied about mental illnness amongst other things. Still determined to move to move to Parramatta despite his contract he starting playing with tanks.

2. Mose Suli - still under contract with Wests Tigers but was obviously offered a more lucrative offer from Manly. He started missing training sessions and at one time slept in a team mate's car during training.

Both players were let go despite their West tigers contract reponsibilities. Today the playing filed is very tilted to clubs like Roosters made rich by the NRL. Poorer clubs which include Wests Tigers are forever pushing uphill to compete.

You’re wrong about Suli. You forget the Dogs signed him before Manly. At Woods recommendation lol.

This destabilising is not happening without a club in waiting. Matterson' stats and selection in the SOO squad have not gone unnoticed. It's on and it is up to WTs to stand firm and shut this down.

We need to make Matterson's departure-if it happens-a costly exercise for whoever is behind this. Proszenko says that Matterson has already shut down an approach from Wests Tigers to discuss an extension and upgrade of his current deal. Maybe he has a better offer he reckons we have no hope of matching given our present cap problems and maybe it's something else entirely. Some feedback from the club would be nice for a change. Even that rabid Wests Tiger-hater Rothfield now seems to believe this is all about money and not about some alleged rift with Madge.

If that were the case then it is pretty simple. We remind him he has another two years under contract and his obligations under the contract and we set a course to have whomever had tampered with him sanctioned as firmly as possible. Time to plant the flag and not be pushed around.

@BalmainJnr Agree. Trying to get someone to walk away from their contractual obligations is called inducement to breach and as far as I know its still legally actionable!
