Just posted by Michael Chammas. The Money Grabber is free to negotiate - has a relationship with incoming Holbrook at the Titans. Lets make this work in our favour now that he is as good as gone....

Yep. Found this interesting from the article

The Tigers are aware of interest in Matterson north of the border, however won’t agree to releasing him to any club unless they reach a favourable outcome.

The club is in the process of drawing up a hit list of targets to replace Matterson.

The joint venture is on the lookout for a fullback and would entertain a swap deal for AJ Brimson.

The Titans, who declined to comment on potentially signing Matterson, are trying to free up space in their salary cap for next season, with several players being shopped to rival clubs.

The option of placing a transfer fee on Matterson’s release has also been discussed.

The Tigers showed last year, through the way they handled the Ivan Cleary saga, that they would only release someone if they benefited from it.

That came in the form of a $250,000 compensation pay-out.

If we have decided to let him go we need to make the most of it. They need to take one or or two of our other nuffies with them as well.

LOL, im just saying.... Matterson is worth Brimson and Arrow put together.....

so that is a fair deal

Yeah disappointing, but at least he hasn't been doing a Moses and not playing at all.

The way we handled Cleary gives me hope.

Been, saying it from day one, this isn't a black mark on Maguire....yes he might be a hard arse, but that's business, these players are well looked after, if half the squad was whinging about Maguire, then I think we have a problem, but this blokes just a sook and a troublemaker....the tigers are in a great position here....get rid of him and get full advantage of it

I like Brimson, but as a 5/8. Classy player

Really classy player. Either 1 or 6 would work for me. He'd be a great pickup, only 21 years old too.

"The club has been dealing with Matterson on this issue for almost two months, when concerns were first raised about the forward’s feelings towards coach Michael Maguire." <-- someone probably told him to raise concerns and start trouble about the coach since he has a history of it at Souths... the funny thing is that's in the past and none of our current roster has any problems with our coach - again if his heart is not in it then let him go but we should benefit from whatever dealings there is to have

This release from Chammas is directly from the club !
To say the very least everyone is furious, Matterson is acting like a CHILD !
Don't rule out Jai Arrow the money he's on for next year is not overly more than what we are paying Matterson.
If Arrow would agree to a move in 2020 & increase in $$ for 2021 it's a real chance.
Madge does also rate Brimson highly.

Apprentice the info as always. As you say unless we get what we want he stays next season. Are there any other clubs involved in this or just the titans?

Since the news came out publicly a few clubs have asked the question, But Eels started this.

Well, if we can identify Parramatta as the instigator along with his manager and the player himself, we should immediately take NRL and court action seeking to have penalties applied to all parties. The NRL should take a stand because we're having the slippery slope of mental problems to get around contractual obligations and NRL rules. By Taj I ng court action as well you're making the NRL administration take this seriously too. Eels have been putting it over WT for some time now. Time to get that smug look off their faces.

Melbourne will erase any smugness !

@hobbo1 immaterial what happens on the field. This is 'we want whatever we want and you and the rules don't count'. This is exactly the same attitude that lead to their salary cap cheating. I'd assume Eels wouldn't like too close a look at their account books again. All this wheeling and dealing for x,y & z players.

I agree , but nothing will be done !

@willow so he basically takes Rochows position in Canterbury cup. Nothing lost. Reputation gained

That's a wasted position and Rochow was on chump change. It's the wrong mentality to take when you tie up over 400 grand on one player to play reggies out of spite or principal or whatever you want to call it - the team suffers because it's a FG position we then have to fill a gap - it then becomes poor player management from the club.

We gain nothing by dropping him to reggies - absolutely nothing.

Well we do gain reputation - if you sign a contract with Tigers then you have to honour it. I don't know how much that reputation is worth.

The problem with releasing Matto is it's more precedent for players to worm out of contracts when they don't like something or other. It just makes life harder for the less successful clubs and adds to the imbalance in the system, because some players just want the bucks and an easy ride.

And it incentivises clubs to constantly undermine key players at their opposition.

Imagine you are Bulldogs and you legitimately want to sign Matto. You put unofficial feelers out to the manager, give some $$$ figures and start the ball rolling. It's then up to the player to figure something out, because the Bulldogs officially can't do anything.

Which is great for Bulldogs - it puts all the risk and backlash on the player. Any maybe you win out, maybe the player gets his release. And if not, you've destabilised your opposition for basically no effort at all.

Gaining reputation won't win us games - it's small thinking and effectively wasting a top 30 spot - we're going to be paying top coin to Packer next season for what? He'll run around in reggies without a care in the world and the club is left paying for it and the fans left frustrated about it. You introduce significant player transfer fees, if he wants to go to another club - we're left in a position where we are not paying out a contract and we are topped up with a percentage of whatever said club is prepared to pay for said player. The club then at least has better bargaining power moving forward.

Like others have said, Brimson would be a handy addition at either 1 or 6. I think the fact that the 6 jumper is for benji and we have been lacking a fullback, Aj will get the nod on the fullback role if he was to come down in 2020.

the other thing is the clubs are more than happy to turf a player early if they haven't risen to their own potential or price tag. This door swings both ways. Clubs can't complain about players doing it and players can't complain about the clubs doing it because they are all nose deep in it

@THE_POM I can live with AJ Brimson and Arrow.

Ta ta Matterson, kama will eventually catch you....

Yea - a swap for just Brimson would need some serious compensation attached to it. Matterson is a future SOO and Aust rep. Brimson is a solid first grader at best.

While I agree he could slot in at fullback for us, why couldn't he play 6, Benji after all is supposedly a back up
