So, he's seeing a sports psychologist... Any chance he plays the mental health card like Moses did to get out of his contract?

This is just purely me guessing...but the SMH story journo is very reliable, and if you look at the timeline his unhappiness is around Origin time....

Where it is likely players mentioned their own conditions / compared it to us...and also he was overlooked for the games whilst Saints, Knights, Sharks players all went in ahead of him...even Tariq Sims, who had a horrible year.

It is well known those camps and officials basically crap on the Tigers / ex players rave about how much better things are away from us.

Just a guess, but I'd be surprised if they don't line up. Matterson is NOT Mitchell Moses. He comes across as very grounded, but def wants to reach his max potential.

He was teammates with Tedesco last year. I wonder if he crapped on us last year. Matterson still signed regardless.

He signed for Cleary though.

Madge is not popular for whatever reason. The Souths leadership group all sung the praises of Seibold the very moment he started and loved Bennet. None of them speak highly of Madge, except when being polite.

I am not defending Matterson...or pretending to know what is going on. Just trying to piece it all together.

IMO he was our best player by a MILE this season and is absolutely elite. That 272 plus meters + 40 tackles game not long ago v The Dogs ( where everyone else was flat and a winnable game was lost) showed pretty clearly he is a level above everyone else we have.

Clubs notice those games. Blokes who run for 270 and make 40 odd tackles = everyone wants.

Can anyone honestly say Jai Arrow is better? And he is gettiing enormous offers.

Matto should be captain and on a great deal....BUT if he wants out, then obviously can't be captain and we are in a bad place.

The whole thing is a crying shame to be honest. We have lost so many elite level players the past few years and only added one, who now wants out seemingly.

Lote Tuquri said it was best thing that could happen to this club when we signed Maguire. He played for both clubs, the Broncos and the Wallabies. Pretty good credentials when assessing a quality coach.

So when Cleary signed Matterson he told him he would be playing in the halves?
Is that what Materson is unhappy about and why he believes he "isn’t getting what he signed up for"?

Lote played one year and lied about retiring so that he could avoid the pre season 🙂

Lote was washed up by that stage and given a rails run to a premiership, so of course he'd be happy.

Who knows...Cleary is / was the ultimate two faced liar.

He probably sold him all sorts of stories.

In fact, I am going to blame Cleary...........it just feels right to do so.

I always wonder...

When something like this comes out in the press, why doesnt the player involved just flat out defuse the situation and tell the media/social media the what hes actually thinking?

say something if its all B.S Matto! if not, well.....

This is my concern zach....we haven't heard anything from anyone....Maguire came out on fox and said everything was sweet between him and Matterson, but if I had a dollar for every time I've heard that from a player or coach, I'd own the gold coast

@Spacecub Does not take a lot of mathematical nous to put 2 and 2 together and come up with Rabbitohs being the reason for his “ unhappiness”, the thug wants to go back to England because he’s done with the judiciary here, they would offer the lifestyle and have the cash. Keep him in CC for two years, see how the career is going then, he did after all promise to play for us for 3 years

Ah sorry @TigerTiger: no...no I won't be careful in saying what I believe or feel, as you should be able to express yourself the way you are used to.
I certainly don't know who is responsible for it being in the media, and it's a real pity that it is, as it's not going to do our club any good at all.
I feel the fact that Matterson has let his feelings be known to Madge since last May with apparently nothing being sorted out and relations being obviously worse, suggests to me Madge is not a good man-manager. Blimey, if you can't keep your best player happy there is something wrong.
Benji and others have said that Madge has worked them harder than any previous coach and now he wants them to do more?
Players have revolted against Madge's style before, I won't be surprised if it happens again here.
Finally, how can a coach be regarded as a good man-manager when he replaces an able-bodied player being Chris Lawrence, when he is performing as well as his teammates, and replaced with a one-legged player that should never have been named in the 21 and who Madge said would not be playing, but bring your gear just in case.
IMO Madge knew very well what he was doing when he said that and it seems to me he was just sucking up to Farah. Of course, Madge later said he was sorry he said that, and so he should have.

Playing devils advocate here.
Despite Mattersons numbers ask your self does he really offer what we need?
Yes he is a steal for $350 but he kinda is a backrower sized player that plays in the middle coz of his work rate.
Matterson to me has never this year looked a strike on the right edge.
He looks to offer more in the middle but at the same time he doesn’t have the shape for the middle.
I would prefer the club had of spent $350 on Jack Gowaski to offer him the back row position in place of matterson.
And why because he is BACKROWER!
I thought Matterson was a different example but he appears to be just like every oversized half forced to play in the forwards due to his size.

Please Tigers, if you do let him go. Do your homework and sign a player that has played in the position you require to be filled since he first played football, NO MORE MAKESHIFTS!

Kurt Capewell is a better example of a wide running backrower and is available. A swap for Matterson would sting at first. But Capewell with a decent Lock would give us a more balanced pack.

@pawsandclaws1 100%, unless we want to go on being treated as a doormat by players, their agents and other clubs. If he does end up going, we need to exact a very heavy price from him or from whoever may be driving this rubbish!

@MAGPIES1963 i actually disagree with most of what you have said. You as a coiach cant bend to every players desire or your team would be a shambles. Matto plays how madge wants not the opposite. For every player that is unhappy there a more that are impressed with madge. So who are we to believe Matto or Benji. Both have opinions we need to find the players that work for madge. Rowdy has been awesome but there is no way we should entertain that he should be here because of sentiment. He isnt a cam smith, benji , gallen level player and he certainly isnt improving. And the farah thing is a freak incident. He wasn't playing his options were Talau a 19 y/o or farah i know who i am picking.

Matterson in 2016

Every week has seemingly vindicated his decision to leave Parramatta only one year into a three-year deal, the Eels’ well-documented woes exceeding any pain felt by the struggling Roosters.

“I wanted to play first grade and I knew that opportunity at Parra wasn’t there,” Matterson said.

“I knew I had to look elsewhere. It’s been an awesome move — so family-oriented and so welcoming. It makes you want to play well because you’re so happy playing football.”

Definitely starting to coming across as a whinger

We didn't care about his previous problems at the Eels and Roosters when he was playing well for us, his next team won't either.

I still hope that this can be resolved and the articles and twitter posts guessing at what is going on are just noise.

the poor fellow- he is earning over 300 thousand a year playing sport and was part of the blues squad in 2019.
must be pretty hard keeping this young man happy.
