Corey Thompson

Have we cancelled the Tuesday afternoon team announcement in 2018?

Seems that way with all this rubbish about a trial side being the finished and final product.

Ivan dropping tui to NSW cup and playing Corey Thompson at fullback shows that tui’s fullback spot is not locked in at all.

David Nofoaluma came off the bench last week. And we signed Chris McQueen to play reserve grade.

All makes sense yeah.

Trails are the be all and end all.

I got confused too, why sign so many edge first graders. Now I kind of get it, because it forces the guys to work and work hard.

I had wondered if Nofo might be a causality of whats going on. He seemed to be a decent winger, but clearly with Corey, MWZ, Kevie, Founa and others snapping at that those two spots he has to perform or loose the position. Personally I hope Tui Pushes Corey out to the wing, but happy too see us roll with the best scorers on the day.

Tough competition for a back spot with the tigers. Hope this does not muck up us finding good combinations as we seem to be chopping and changing a lot. Either way should give us a strong starting 17.

Big difference mate…..

Coming off the bench and playing reserve grade is different to playing another postition.

If you saw Nofo get switched position wise it obviously shows that Ivan is experimenting other positions.

Same goes with Thompson it shows that Ivan is considering that he could play fullback, and wants to see how he goes.....

So yeah it does make a lot of sense lol

They are trials most teams are not playing to their usual shapes or combinations. Place NO value in trials. The squads selected have zero bearing on the round 1 team.

Zero bearing? Disagree completely.

You simply do not play a member of the spine in a reserve grade trial when your attempting to form combinations. There is no logical reason to do that. The fact is, if round one was picked today, Thompson would be fullback. May change after saturday, but i doubt it.

People seem to forget that before he went to the Dogs he starred in the QLD Cup at fullback and had never played on the wing but the dogs had Barba but he was playing so well they needed to find somewhere for him because he was playing so well so he played wing.

So fullback is his natural position and I have a feeling we might get a surprise at just how well he goes at FB

Agree 100% with KS on this, particularly given the number of personnel changes the Tigers have had during the off-season. We have a new spine which is going to take time to gel and a number of outside back and forward options to consider. Smashing it on the training paddock and during a game are two different things.

It’s the same every year with all teams.
I’m not saying the coach is set on his team either way all I am saying is the lineups will have zero bearing on our team for the regular season. What is happening in training is more important as coaches don’t show their hand in the offseason. You won’t see a single attaching setup this week or last used in round 1.

I just wouldn’t read into the starting lineups this week as meaning it’s the favoured team to take the field.

I doubt people forget that, they probably just never knew (I know I didn't). I figure if he was a gun fullback he would've spent 100% of his time playing there in the ESL, and he didn't.

I was just thinking that maybe Ivan has realised Corry is a good option as backup fullback
So he gives him a full game at fullback against the sharks to really test him
Corry comes trough with flying colours
No need to sign RTS or Barba now
So now he has 1.4million to by players for other more needed positions
What do you guys think

I’m pretty sure we’ll be chasing RTS regardless. I very much doubt Corey Thompson will make the club change its mind lol.

Regardless of how lolohea or Thompson go in the fullback role.. I'd say the club will still be going all out for rts imo

100% RTS for 2019 and Cleary for 2020.
We struggle to attract top players it needs to change.

Tigers reward Thompson with new contract for 2019

Corey Thompson has capped off a memorable return to the Telstra Premiership with the Wests Tigers announcing his re-signing until the end of 2019.

Thompson joined the joint venture club after two years in the English Super League and has made an immediate impact, helping guide the side to three wins in their opening four games of the season.

The 27-year-old was a shock selection in the season opener by Ivan Cleary, who opted for the former Bulldogs winger over fan favourite David Nofoaluma after an impressive pre-season that proved too good to ignore.

Thompson has responded in the first month of the competition, averaging 140 metres per game and with four line breaks and three tries.

"I came back to the NRL with no expectations, just the opportunity Ivan gave me I wanted to take with both hands," Thompson told NRL.com on Tuesday.

"I love this club and feel like I've been here for a lot longer than I have.

"It's all worked out so far but now I want to keep working hard because we've still got a long way to go as a side and personally I can get better."

Head coach Ivan Cleary said Thompson’s new deal was a reward for his hard work.

“Corey has been impressive in how he’s committed himself to training and his efforts on the field since joining the club,” said Cleary. “His new contract is a great reward for his hard work and I look forward to seeing him continue to develop over the coming seasons.”

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said that Thompson has been impressive both on and off the field.

“I’d like to commend Corey on how he’s settled into life at Wests Tigers and how he has bought into the direction that we are taking the club,” said Pascoe. “He’s an impressive young man who has quickly become a fan favourite and we all look forward to having him as a part of our club long into the future.”

Really doubt that RTS will want to leave the Warriors. Especially with their current form.

Not when he just re-signed 2 weeks ago.
