The more people in league circles I talk to, the more I hear "The NRL isn't coming back this year". Clubs beginning to concede it makes more sense to restart in 2021.

How can they make that call now, the comp only got postponed 5 days ago?

I wonder if the NRL would consider starting up in February if we don’t get anymore football this year. Would a 27-28 round season be an option?

Too long, but maybe get creative to create some more content for next year!

Too long, but remember the player’s won’t have played a full season in 2 years.

Too long for fans too. I'd rather start early and have a proper challenge cup style tournament. So maybe once a month have a weekend for challenge cup games!

Look why can't we mess with some stuff ...get the players to play on 4 day turnarounds ...maybe limit players to 12 of the 15 games ....extend the 30 man squads

You could have a game every night ..and still be finished by early mid November and then play 3 SOO games

Solved

I would find a way to play something, set teams up in pools and play it like a world cup, have a straight knockout comp! Fit something in even if its only played over a month!

Will China put a team in?

Biggest thing I can think of with corona wiping out this season,,,is will Lawrence and Marshall play again next season?

Hopefully not. Its an unfortunate way to go out, but for mine its the end of the road.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Their bodies will probably be feeling reasonably fresh. This virus will cause havoc with player recruitment/retention across the board. It’s a subject that hasn’t been given the attention that it needs. Probably deserves its own thread.

No but they might try and buy the comp.

I think so too. They will do big business in 2021 imo. Memberships will go through the roof, and a lot sell outs. People will be starving for footy.

Dunno about memberships in the roof.... Everyone's moneys going down the drain....
Will take a long time for many many people to get back on their feet... I think crowds will be down maybe after an initial spike if and when the game resumes

I agree about memberships. All the luxuries go when people are doing it tough. The NRL may have to lower their general admission prices for sometime if they want sustained larger crowds.

Question
What effect does anyone think this will have at grassroots. Stronger or weaker.
I hope it lifts input back at this level but can't see it happening

I think it will definately hurt junior and country football. Most of the clubs live hand to mouth and any disruption to games/income will hurt badly in the short term and to a lesser but still large extent long term.
Pub/club raffles and game bbqs are still a major source of their funds plus in Sydney many if not most junior football clubs do get financial support from the parent NRL club which helps

If the salary cap drops significantly do all players contracts become null and void

Does every player become open season for 2021 ??

The only way I see them seeing a positive is if nrl goes bust and the fat is trimmed right back by a new controller. Dont know for sure but I have a feeling there's a lot of wasted money across the game

Stories today have the NRL players superannuation fund being 10 million short over the last 2 seasons ....NRL going to save some more money when they sack whoever is involved with that
