Some of the things you see are real eye-openers. I spent two weeks in china last year and really enjoyed my time there. We spent around half our time in cities and half outside the cities. I was quite pleasantly surprised at the standards of health and hygiene I saw. Of course the non-Western toilets take some getting used to and, to be frank, I don't know how old people use them. But, on the whole, we enjoyed our time there and didn't see much that was a turn-off.

Just spoke to my wife who is celebrating New Year with her family in China. Not sure how wide spread this is but all the shops and services are shut in her family’s home town. Everyone is being advised to stay home. Sounds like they are taking this virus very seriously and putting appropriate actions in place.

Steve, like you and some others I was disgusted by Willow's comment. It was out-and-out racist. I've known a few Chinese people and found them to be fabulous people. I visited China last year and was amazed by the culture, the history and the fabulous sights. I think there's a large divide between hygiene and customs in city and rural areas but to label an entire race as grubs is just a disgraceful comment. Willow, as someone who moderates comments on this forum, you should be ashamed of yours.

Yep it’s an amazing place. My wife and her siblings live in cities whilst her parents live a subsistence life. Always amazes me watching my wife and her sister dressed immaculately, plucking a duck on its way to becoming the evening meal!! Funny to watch

Haha
I used to watch my dad pluck ducks for xmas but he used to wear stubbies and a singlet with a can of KB in his hand

I used to hold the chooks until they were beheaded and made their mad scoot away, spurting blood everywhere. We'd pluck, but sure as eggs one would be missed and end up in your mouth. I guess some would consider that grubby and unhygienic.

Not saying it won't get worse.

But for some perspective, it's apparently killed about 40 people, mostly people who were elderly.

Malaria kills one million a year.

80000 odd died from flu last year

Death toll is now officialy 56 in China, also of concern is it is now believed that people are contagious carriers of the virus days before showing any symptoms which would have to be a massive concern for health officials

And 46 flights from China landed in OZ today ..

Sounds like they are trying to escape China
Close the boarders

Bloody oath

100% shut the boarders down with China, but I think its already too late

We rely on china on so many levels. We would be bankrupt without China.

From trade to industries like education (the international students community which makes up 60% chinese provide employment for staff in vocational education and universities) to tourism; hospitality; retail just to name a few...

Disgusting people they seem to always be at the epicentre of the outbreaks along with people in Africa who are in poverty unlike the chinese. Me personally i am very worried about anything like this i have a 9 yr old that has a heart condition and with that comes low immunity, luckily i dont live in Sydney anymore we used to live in a suburb with a high transient Chinese population. They would spend some months in China and then some months in Australia very common among the older Chinese people.

I lived in China for 5 years. I have seen everything and I mean everything served as a dish, Koala to Komodo Dragon, Monkey to Marmot. Alive in cages like what we do in the West with lobster. The customer can walk in and choose which Koala from a cage he wants cooked up. Different cultures that 99% of people in the West have no idea what goes on in certain parts of the world.

The Chinese have a saying which very roughly translates to -
"We will eat anything with 4 legs but the kitchen table and we will eat anything that flies except an aeroplane".

How very true.

Confirms what I always suspected of Chinese

what's that? over 5000 years of history? developments in medicine; music; art and culture? I was just at the Zuhai bridge a few months ago.

Careful where you go making sweeping statements. People have a tendency for lazy thinking.

They're a bunch of grubs with no concept of hygiene. Hardly a surprise a new virus was borne out of a food market.

you out of all people man. common...

so when ebola came out did you say the same about africans? What about the spanish flu? how do you feel about the spanish? what about the french? grubs?

**Say no to racism.**

Edit- i still remember in 2014 me and my mate motor biked the silk road and when we got to xinjiang the locals Uyghur and Han were unbelievably warm and welcoming. First questions " have you eaten?" good times...

Happy Lunar New Year!

The Spanish flu didn't originate in Spain. The only reason why it's referred to as the Spanish flu as it was during wartime and Spain was neutral so had nothing to lose in reporting that they were suffering from it. The allies and Germans didn't want to report on it for obvious reasons. The "Spanish flu" was reported to have started in the USA and France.

yup, i mentioned france. But yeah you got my point

On the flu itself, it's going to do some damage in a heavily populated country like China. Every year we get hit with a flu strain and people die. I'd hate for this country to be labelled as unclean as a result.

Yeah I did, just correcting a historical misrepresentation haha.

The French should be mentioned up with the Chinese in the animal cruelty stakes and what they will eat in regard to food. The way they achieve foie gras is abhorrent.

Funnily enough the source of the Spanish Flu is still disputed but it didn't originate in Spain. Interestingly it's called the Spanish Flu because when it broke out the countries engaged in WW1 had severe censorship restrictions not to report anything that could affect morale. Spain, who were neutral in WW1, had no such restrictions and therefore reported on it widely, hence the name.

Corona is a rookie compared to those guys.

Less than 1,000 people died from SARS.

Apparently that was the end of modern times.
