Coronavirus Outbreak

I know some people who have been bumped from planes at Heathrow 7 times
My cousin is a jockey and he couldn't get back here gave up and went back to u.k.
Another friend of mine his mum was dying of cancer in Philippines and she got bumped up and on a plane back here for palliative care.
Not really sure what the reasoning behind who can come here and the numbers, we do have lots of ex pats and a shocking system in Victoria thanks to chairman Dan

I’m very naive about all this, but my question is why are we continuing to bring people here from overseas in the first place? With this so called new, more virulent strain emerging why can’t everyone just bloody well stay where they are for now! At least until the vaccines are rolled out and hopefully things might actually settle down.

And if we have to bring them back here for whatever reason, why are the authorities at the other end not checking and testing people rigorously before allowing them to board a plane? It’s all very well to blame our quarantine measures at this end (and yes they haven’t been great at times either), but I think it’s actually the quarantine measures at the other end that is letting us down more often than not. Stop accepting people from overseas period! Expats or not.

Australia is in a good position with Covid compared to much of the world, yet we’re still intent on bringing the rest of the world to our shores during this pandemic and threatening the safety of the country in the process - it’s bloody madness.

SHUT THE OS BORDERS! SPUD FOR PM ??

Seems a bit unfair to lock Aussies out of their own country.

You'd also be shutting down international imports/exports which would be economically devastating.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Do you really want Australia ending up in the same position as Europe and the US with this thing? Because that is what will happen if we keep inviting people from the Covid riddled world onto our shores.

I know they are primarily Aussies trying to get home, but as someone posted above, they have had 12 months to get back, so why is it taking them so long? I had one friend in India and one in Japan when this all first broke. Admittedly they took some time to organise getting back home, especially one of them as he contracted Glandular Fever so he was unable to fly for a couple of months. However, both were back home here by June 2020, despite the delays.

As for the imports, we are a country rich in farming and natural resources right across the land - time to start utilising them more completely instead of selling out to the highest overseas bidder and have them import inferior quality goods and services into our country. We can still export ?

It took over 4 months for our daughter to get back home in ***2019*** and even then we had to pay for her to get upgraded to Business class and even with a Business class ticket she was bumped 3 times, so not all the fault lies with the passengers.

In 2019?

Can't stop Australian citizens returning home. Irrespective as to why they are overseas and taken so long to return, I am uncomfortable with stopping Australian passport holders from coming home.

What about dual citizens, or people that have not been in the country for the last 20 years? People that studied here and likely still have debts but have moved overseas, earned income and paid taxes overseas and not contributed anything to this country?

When things get tough there is a sense of entitlement in that they should be repatriated, should be assisted in getting here, quarantine facilities (and meals etc.) should be of a standard that they approve on, and the location should be convenient for them.

Then again when you let planeloads of overseas tennis players and entourage in for no good reason other than a commercial event (that no-one can no go to), it is hard to argue for tighter restrictions on entry.

At least those people locked in their homes for 5 days (at least) in Victoria can take solace in the fact that they are able to watch the tennis on TV all day.

Rant over, must be the wrong side of bed this morning.

Don't care. You hold an Australian passport you are entitled entry. Start making exceptions it becomes a slippery slide.

Often the return home is not a simple task...

My niece is in the UK and has 8 flights canceled over a 5 month period..She can't afford the 35K+ asking rate for a first class flight offered..so she has to wait..esp since Emirates stpped flights

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible for the Federal to do a massive push with chartered flights from central hubs and just get it done

I'm not commenting on the circumstances, I am saying if you hold an Australian passport you should be given entry.

Agreed.

I also think the the way that international returns have been handled for the most part have been done well. I don't want to see expedited returns to detriment of the community. We are up there with the best managed combined response to containing COVID. There are still leaks from hotel quarantine, and rapidly accepting more arrivals exacerbates the risk of outbreak.

It was the States and Territories, at an early National Cabinet Meeting ironically lead by Dan Andrews, who wanted to undertake quarantine. That is where the public health systems are run. CMO Paul Kelly reiterated this point yesterday. Dan probably had difficulty recalling this and a few other details in his rush to implement another lockdown.

Apparently Victoria has higher quarantine standards than NSW. That's what he said before the latest leak. And it is not the leak that is the concern, it is how you respond and already Vic contact tracing is again under scrutiny, hence another lockdown to buy time.

He has a lot to answer for not the least the second most populous State taking only 36,000 returned Australians against the 125,000 taken by NSW.

The Labor Party need to come up with something a bit more useful than the mantra that it is a Fed issue. It would be a good start to replace Albanese with Jim Chalmers, Penny Wong or Tanya Plibersek.

Yes I am a Labor voter but I will not blindly follow the master of spin in Victoria.

WHO are a joke at this stage.

A specialist cited by the ABC this morning also implied the lab statement was as much about politics as anything else:

"They quickly dismissed possible unnatural origins, which was expected, given the political sensitivities, not just for China, but for the world," Raina MacIntyre, an infectious disease specialist at the University of New South Wales, said.

She questioned what evidence was presented to fully rule out the theory."

She was also rather critical of the WHO investigation more broadly.
