I was going through some of the posts here and it pricked my interest based on the latest Covid surveillance report 14/08/2021.
That report states that 100% of NSW cases are Delta.
Total active cases 7781 and out of that number 194 were fully vaccinated. At that date, approximately 20% of the population were fully vaccinated and so if the vax did nothing you would expect that 1556 people would have COVID fully vaxxed instead of 194. This implies that you are 8 x less likely to contract COVID if you are fully vaxxed.
Does 8 x less likely sound familiar? 8 x less likely equals 88% efficacy which is exactly the efficacy quoted in the NEw England Journal of Medicine for Delta for Pfizer (67% for AZ). It will never be equal with all the possible variations due to lockdowns etc but for me its comforting to see the scientific information seem to hold up in our real life experience.
