Guys - China is to blame for this outbreak but plenty of other countries have caused outbreaks in the past.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Central_Luzon_H5N6_outbreak

I think the real question is do we stop eating meat ?

Yeah my bat strew is off the menu..

Honestly it's at times like this to be logical and this is just an opportunity for the ignorant and racist among us to come up with conspiracy theories and scream that the dirty Chinese are the problem.

We've had these outbreaks previously and we need to calm down and put stuff into perspective. I can't see human beings stopping eating meat but blaming the Chinese for this probably isn't fair especially when we've had Trumpy stating really dumb stuff and not only that. Some westerners are so arrogant that they believe they can just keep going on with their normal lives.

Can you provide an example of where this type of outbreak occurred in the last 70 years?

If the Chinese had been honest about the infections and governments worldwide had focused on their own populations and shut borders down, there would not be the current worldwide infection and death rates.

You can’t do that these days as somehow protecting people within your borders is seen as racist.

I am willing to bet that worldwide death numbers and percentages will be much higher than China’s. Is that because China are not honestly reporting deaths, that they have a treatment not being shared.

The number of businesses that will go bust and people that will lose their homes or property will be unbelievable. Foreign investment (carcass picking) needs to be banned until a longer term plan is implemented.

Such a confusing and contradictory post towards the end? Not really sure if you’re a tin-hat man or on the ‘logical’ side of the fence but such a post indicates total lack of understanding of international policy and finances?

Who’s going to stop China’s success? You...

No, government policy. See how you go as a non citizen trying to buy land or assets in most Asian countries without a local patent.

International policy and finances are what have left our country in its current position. We have lost control of our country and its assets based on people willing to profiteer by selling to the highest bidder. That bidder is usually a foreign entity.

I would love to see a breakdown of the ownership of this country based on land value or land mass.

I think it would be a shock to most people to realise that we are no longer our own county, but a subsidiary of the US, Europe anda multitude of Asian and middle eastern countries.

I think the government needs to be careful not to push us into a depression for the next 10 odd years. We can't go broke over this. I think it's not that bad a virus and if we can get through even this flu season we can turn it all around relatively quickly.

Agree to this ...
Our kids could be paying for this even in 20years time with 17% interest rates .
The media needs to shut up and tone it down and only report on the true facts .

This is exactly what’s going to happen ... after the recession we had to have In the 80s which was nothing like What’s happening today we were borrowing money at 18 percent ...
the major focus at present is the virus which is understandable but the virus will pass..unfortunately there is going to be massive financial hardship for a decade or more our society has been living on credit for years and has been at critical levels .
If people think when the virus is gone things will return as they were better think again this is the financial correction that has been coming for a long time .. when now there is zero interest and nowhere else to go
the virus is going to be the least to be concerned about .

Do people on here honestly believe that our current secretive government would have handled things better than China have, such as close our borders, had the outbreak begun here. Hell, ours are only just closing now to try and prevent further damage, and we still don't have adequate testing, despite having knowledge and months to prepare.

Plus, let's get real, it's only one leader that is calling this the China virus and mostly his regular parrots, whom are also mostly racist, that are doing similarly.

What are you talking about? China NEVER closed borders, there were 10's of thousands of Chinese students who flew out to Australia MONTHS after this started. You can still fly INTO China today.

You mention that Australia are only closing its borders today and ask would they have done that if it originated here, well firstly, we were the second country in the world to close our borders to China and Iran and secondly, if it ORIGINATES in your country, what the hell does it do to stop people coming IN?

I am obviously comparing people's expectations of other nations to ours and suggest you take another look if you did not pick it up first time around.

You ***literally said *** "*Do people on here honestly believe that our current secretive government would have handled things better than China have, ********such as close our borders********, had the outbreak begun here.* "

China did not close their borders and again if originates in your country, stopping people from coming in would be pretty ineffective.

But to answer your question, no, I dont think the Australian Government (of either political flavour) would have behaved like the Chinese. I dont think that our Government would have arrested and detained the Doctors that discovered it, I dont think our Government would have forcibly entered the testing lab that did the initial tests that identified it and destroyed vials to destroy evidence (source The London Times & Washington Post), no I dont think that the Australian Government would have forcibly smashed peoples doors down to drag them from their houses and forcibly drag them into quarantine, no I dont think The Australian Government would have welded doors shut, locking people in their own homes. No, I know for a FACT that the Australian government would not allow unregulated "wet" markets that have now spurned THREE fatal zoonotic viruses onto the wider population (COVID, Swine H1N1 & Avian).

So no. I dont think an Australia government would have handled the situation like China did, and thank God for that.

I read today that one of the reasons that NSW have the largest number of cases, particularly Sydney (I would have thought population numbers and tourism would have been enough) is that NSW have a much more liberal testing regime in that they allow more people to get tested and have carried out a lot more tests (over 25K). I wonder if the spikes in QLD & WA today are testing related.

Here is the thing. It would have spread anyway. Australia would have reacted too slowly just like the rest of the world would have. There wouldn't have been the same government presence but that works against us as well as for us.

This isn't a statement about the Chinese government and their poor behavior. There have been bad governments/social systems in place throughout history and China today are far from being at the top of the list of oppressive regimes we've seen. For all your outrage this could have happened anywhere for whatever reason. The Earth/nature/god/whatever throws stuff like this out every so often.

We've know about stuff like this for years and we've failed this test.

It increased less than what I thought it would. One day is nothing though. Let's see what happens over the next couple of weeks. The first thing to deal with is the human impact. I hope we handle the situation well from here on in.

Probably true, but I wasnt making a case that the Aussie Government would have done a good job, Formerguest made the point that the Chinese did a good job and better than the Aussies would have, I think this is demonstrably false. I actually think that the CCP actions for the first few months of this (locking up whistleblowers, denial etc) are the reason we are facing a worldwide pandemic now.

This isn't a statement about the Chinese government and their poor behavior.

No Formerguest was making the point that they behaved well (relative to the Australians). He is wrong and specifically he used an example of closing borders that didnt happen at all. That is the ONLY point I was making.

>There have been bad governments/social systems in place throughout history and China today are far from being at the top of the list of oppressive regimes we've seen.

Really? I cant think of many more oppressive. Hitler? Stalin? Mao and subsequent CCP regimes are responsible for more deaths and oppression than both combined. Not a political statement, statement of fact. Who has been more opporessive in history than the CCP? Seriously?

>For all your outrage this could have happened anywhere for whatever reason. The Earth/nature/god/whatever throws stuff like this out every so often.

Possibly could have happened anywhere that they have wet markets harbouring zoonitic viruses in poorly maintained pens with many different species in stressed conditions on top of each other. So far SARS, H1N1, Avian flu and now COVID 19 have come out of China as a direct consequency of the way they maintain and treat animals.

Earth/Nature/God seem to have a propensity for throwing this stuff out of Chinese wet markets as some sort of universal coincidence.

I'm not sure that you are getting this point though in relation to this being China's problem. China have a massive population and they have lots of customs that appear weird to us such as eating bats. The thing is other cultures also eat bats. I'm not stating it's good either. It's just that if you eat enough bats there are going to be viruses transmitted.

Once the outbreak started the majority of governments stuffed up. China being an oppressive regime might have helped contain the virus and it could have been worse. That isn't stating the Chinese government are good people or that their approach was correct.

None of that changes the fact that clearly there should be pressure on China to be more transparent, to stop people eating that crap and getting rid of markets like that.

Earl, I literally just made the point that the whole of polynesia eats bats. I also dont think it has been proven that eating bats was the origin of the outbreak. As per my point, even if it was a bat, i think there is a consensus that these wet markets with so many dying and suffering animals kept in poor conditions and then slaughtered on the spot with no protection, THAT is the problem and there is a proven history of zoonotic viruses originating in this conditions, in China. I honestly dont understand why there is any debate about it.
