So apparently the Delta strain is 55% more transmissible than the original Wuhan virus.
Scary stuff

I would be interested in actual data on whether it is as deadly.

The natural evolution for a virus is usually in a less deadly direction and that is how the Spanish Flu dissipated (variants are still around today).

The stats out of the UK are hard to parse IMO. Incredible amounts of new cases, that doesnt make sense unless the vaccines dont work on the Delta variant, but much reduced deaths. Impossible to from that data if its less deadly or whether the vaccine is the reason for the reduced morbidity.

Yep, that’s my take on it as well. Looks less deadly but we need more data.

Seems to be putting more younger people in hospital, we have 43 people in hospital, 14 under 55 and 7 of those under 35. 10 people in intensive care with one of those in their 30s and another in their 20s. The person in 20s is ventilated.

1 in 10 cases are hospitalised.

Seems to effect younger people more severely.. It's a worry..

The next couple of weeks will show us how deadly it is as we are just starting to enter the period where we would start to see deaths.

The sad thing is that most times a ventilator just delays the inevitable.

I think it is a 50% death rate once to that point.

All depends on how hard the machine needs to work to keep you breathing.

With Covid the death probably once on a ventilator is higher then 50/50.

I was quoted 50% tonight but they are not stats I'm 100% confident on.

That was the old strain. The new strain is more stubben

They are also saying that they better understand treatment of patients these days which improves rates.

Unfortunately, for some there is nothing that can be done

I posted this BBC article a few days ago. It addresses the issue that you raised about increased infection levels.

dont think that's right.

Pretty sure its more contagious, but less deadly. the problem lies in he ability to overwhelm hospital systems. especially ICU

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1106720/australia-number-of-icu-beds-by-state/

it gets loose and we are in trouble. if you are number 875 in NSW, you hope someone else dies. but the tragedy is the other people that need ICU and are not covid related. they are the cost of this. tragic stuff... then there are the doctors and nurses that have to choose.

wear a mask, get vaccinated, become a hermit, just do your stuff. its no that hard
