You can only hope that is the case.

I saw this article on the ABC today. I guess it's a bit political, but worth a read:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-08/the-destruction-in-the-economy-could-have-been-prevented/100358798

I'm reminded of the James Carville quote, "It's the economy, stupid".

Pretty well spells out the results of Covid choices which many saw as obvious and highlights the cost of political refusal to admit wrrrrong.

The $300 vaccine incentive payment suggestion during the week and the attacks on it are just another example of money that would be extremely well spent lost. Bipartisanship would be almost certain had it come from the government, but instead we saw a bully at the pulpit and wasted opportunity.

I'm not a great fan of the $300 vaccine incentive. I think that, in the longer term, full participation in society, as a vaccinated person, is a better incentive. But, if we do decide to go down cash incentive path then we should get on with it asap. The worst possible course of action would be to dangle it out there as something that we ***might*** do.

That would merely give some people, who can get the vaccine, a reason to hold off getting it until the payments have been confirmed.

With Frewen saying that all options will be on the table and Morrison ridiculing the idea I think we are dangerously close to the worst possible course.

In any event, we don't have sufficient appropriate vaccines for everyone who wants them, so it seems a bit pointless to dangle incentives in front of people who can't get vaccination appointments.

“We kept him at home since March last year. While my mum and I are vaccinated, he had serious health complications that prevented him from being vaccinated. Don’t fall for the implied and amplified narrative that this has only affected the irresponsible or vaccine-hesitant.”

Did they go and get medical advice ? My dad is a retired doctor. He has so many health problems. He got vaccinated straight away with the AZ. I'm worried dad will die from COVID despite being vaccinated. It's going to happen at some point. Old people die of the flu all the time.

There were probably risk averse because I cannot believe any medical doctor would not recommend getting vaccinated. It's such a cut and dry case.

I get there will be some people who can't for some reason but I think that will such a tiny minority. There will be people who don't develop antibodies from the vaccines as well.

Please speak to a doctor though.

This shouldn't be a political debate. In NSW 47.33% are fully vacccinated above the age of 70. The AZ vaccine has been available for ages. It is much safer to take the AZ vaccine than not take it especially in that age category. There are also a tonne of vaccines available. Everyone 70+ should be fully vaccinated by now.

You have to ask the question why didn't that guy take the AZ vaccine ?

We can only go on what he said and clearly stated. **"While my mum and I are vaccinated, he had serious health complications that prevented him from being vaccinated"** and that his father wasn't vaccine hesitant.

There are many thousands of people that cannot accept vaccines for medical reasons and you really need to take a step down from your high horse on this issue. We need to bring people along rather than castigation.

The main ATAGI advice remains Pfizer for 16 and above (everyone), with AZ for over 60's and everybody eligible to get a Learner's Permit should have the choice. Political failure led to a direction for under 60's to consider AZ because of the constraints with Pfizer availability, meaning most people still don't have that choice available to them.

The risk of AZ to people under 60 has been greatly overplayed.

I don't disagree, though it is very important that there is honesty surrounding vaccines and particularly in this perceived rushed or otherwise program. Australia is not the only country to have placed restrictions on it and some countries have banned it's use totally. Truth and choice is vitally important and now more than ever.

I encourage people to get vaccinated, myself getting my first shot tomorrow and sure that you are aware would have had the AZ that I went to book months ago if my circumstances were different.

I have no confidence in containing the Delta variant longer term.

I look at the experience with Delta in the Eastern Suburbs and the outbreak appears contained. Although it was a different variant, the large outbreak in the Northern Beaches was also contained. I do have my private thoughts on the reasons why.

Those private thoughts would translate very well to why lockdowns work in Brisbane.
We all have those thoughts we're just not allowed to voice them anymore

If it doesn’t re-opening at 70% could be catastrophic.

Who knows. I think 70% of people fully vaccinated might mean herd immunity. People will die but hopefully it won't be that bad.

I think we will get to 50% fully vaccinated and restrictions will be eased.

I even think it will be less than that. They are stating tradies in the affected LGA's will be able to go to work if fully vaccinated.

I don't know if we will ever get to 80% fully vaccinated.

Not getting to 80% in my opinion would be a huge failure as a nation.

It's a massive failure right now. I'm not political so I don't want to turn it into a bashing the liberal party thread and I also don't think it's that simple.

I'm not on facebook or twitter or anything like that. I have an anti-vaxxer mate who I rang up to give him hell. He had already had his first shot and was telling me about another mate (not close) who was posting all sorts of nonsense of facebook.

To me it's nuts. It's like here is some medicine that really smart people have made and this is ridiculously expensive but we will give it to you for free. It'll stop you getting really sick and in some cases dying.

I don't understand not getting to 100%.

Haha. The first rule of life, Earl.

Whenever someone wants to do something, no matter how good or how worthwhile, there will always be someone else out there who wants to stop them from doing it.

If I was smart enough to come up with a simple solution to forever stop world poverty, famine and hunger, there would be someone prepared to devote their life to preventing me from implementing it.

I do. I also don't think it's right to racially profile people. I like the people who are causing problems. I know heaps of them. They are actually good people. They just have crazy ideas.

They get their information from facebook and the like. They have told me that they don't believe 9/11 happened. It was a government conspiracy. I've relayed how my sister in law thinks vaccines are untested and she didn't even care about the lockdown.

There are also several differences between those demographic areas. I'm in one of those LGA's. I live in a relatively wealthy part of that area. These areas are much denser and these people are often marginalized.

My sister in law sends her 10 odd kids back to her grandmas to live because they get better schooling but the grandma has a small house with all these grandkids and I assume kids living there. This lady is a super woman.

It's not as simple as blaming them. I reckon we need to do something to help the situation but I don't have the answers.

Well, NSW numbers are up again today and it's the same old spiel from Gladys...The lockdown hasn't worked, in so far as she could have, and should have gone harder with it.

I'll be surprised if she relaxes any restrictions next month.

You think we're looking at a long lockdown?

My sister in law has a wedding booked for next month.
Wonder how that'll go...

Hunter/Newcastle entered a 7 snap lockdown.
I have no doubts it will be extended.

I just can't see us getting out of this Demps. Maybe it's just my frustration at the whole thing with the way it's playing out, but it's clear people who have the virus either aren't aware, or don't care because they are still out in the community and it's continuing to spread, which means resources will be spread thinner, reducing their effectiveness.

100%

Rough times ahead.
Craving some normality.

But yeah, people need to follow the rules.

It’ll be a long off season for us footy heads

That's when I do all my bushwalking (when the cricket's not on.)

Just got back from the Falls not long ago. First time down the bottom, an absolutely beautiful spot.

What brand shoes/boots do you wear and/or recommend when bush walking @Cultured_Bogan?
I need a pair of soft easy walkin but supportive and protective shoes/boots, but cant afford to pay big $$$.

Sorry mate I missed this.

I wear comfortable sneakers because I have dancers feet. I've done all the walks in the mountains that I have in just sneakers.

I have only worn ASICS for the last 12 years. They can cop a flogging and are well made.

You're very lucky that you can do fair dinkum bush walks in sneakers.

They are the principle culprits of course.
You only had to watch 9 news in Brisbane this week to see how they twisted good news coming out of the covid press conferences. If you only believed them then the world was ending imminently and your neighbours were your greatest enemy.
Bad news gets eyes on it so all news is twisted to be bad and exaggerated. Fear creates viewers and readers.
