Just to put things in perspective, there were 1,100 flu-related deaths in 2017 and 900 in 2019.

Out of curiosity how many were there in 2020?

And I believe there may have been no flu cases remember reading even though millions may have been vaccinated and the flu shot was mandated even though there was no flu in the country.

A serious answer would be nice.
Mean to be serious
Forgive me if I'm wrong but remember reading this this time last year unless I got confused with something else.

Again my bad if wrong but pretty sure of this.

My apologies, you were sort of right. It’s been a year since a death from influenza in Australia. I found the figures below (source newsGP)

Shows how effective the prevention measures have been for Covid that they translate to this.

Were all reading too many depressing articles

1553 cases today and 4 more deaths, people still think it's just a flu. Of the deaths 3 were partly vaccinated and the rest hadn't been.

I just found out my 17yo daughter has just got her first jab.

Typical of my ex wife (horrible human...long story) to make a decision like this without consulting me, but the truth is I feel more relieved that my three kids are vaccinated.

My first shot next friday

Just watched John Brogden at the COVID press conference talking about the importance of dealing with the mental health issues surrounding COVID. John is CEO of Lifeline but talks from the heart as he survived a suicide attempt when he was opposition leader in NSW many years ago. I thought his presentation was outstanding and a timely reminder of the potentially serious mental health aspects of COVID that tend to be overlooked at times.

What does returning to normal life mean?

Does vaccinating 80% of the population really mean normal life can resume?

To begin to attempt to answer this question we should also ask,
Will some of our behavioural changes be known as temporary, but others will stick with us for many more years?

When it was the W.H.O announcing the beginning of this pandemic,
Can normal life resume without the W.H.O announcing the end of this pandemic, and will it be, 2023? 2024? 2025?

The Premier said today that the restrictions will ease, and we will do the the things we use to enjoy doing soon. And around the World, glimpses of a pre-pandemic world have begun to reappear. But, Will life ever return to normal?

My understading is, when looking at previous pandemics and how they have effected the changes of behaviour of the world, that until the world health experts find a way to quickly tackle the emerging variants of this virus, we will not be getting back to normal life anytime soon. and even when the pandemic is over, the lives of all people of the world will not be the same as pre-pandemic.

Really good question.

Perhaps life won't ever go back to exactly how it was.

My layman prediction is that we're in for two to three years of some kind of restrictions and mask wearing.

I reckon masks will be a new normal.

**I also think we'll be better prepared for the next pandemic too**

I don’t. We have done absolutely nothing to prepare, everything has been reactionary. What I mean is there is no infrastructure in place that is different to pre-pandemic. We’ll have the same appalling result with the next pandemic and there will be a next.

Yeah but everything results in a Royal Commission these days so no doubt we'll see at least one of those in the aftermath and some sensible people can make some sensible recommendations that will hopefully be acted upon. Once there's a report issued by a Royal Commission it's hard to justify sitting around and not acting on it, unless it's something unpopular with the public like the result of the ice inquiry.

Yes I think a royal commission would be required once we hit 80% so November to January I would like one on the way forward .

At the moment too many decisions are being made without legislation on health ministers orders , if there are to be restrictions going on for couple or more years , this should be fully reviewed. It’s probably the one time we really need royal commissions in this country

He has been a shining light in this area for some years now and the only reason that I watched past the initial numbers information.

His recovery and now his hard work and dedication to save peoples lives is truly an outstanding story.

I didn't see the NSW press conference, but the ABC is reporting the four deaths and saying that none of them were vaccinated. If people have had one shot, they usually say so.

Did your info come from the press conference or somewhere else?

I saw it. The deaths were all not vaccinated.

It was a little confusing as he was not very articulate with the numbers and appeared to be muddled a little bit.

9 News has a direct quote from Hazzard, "Sadly, none of the four people who passed away were vaccinated."

There was a time not very long ago when figures like todays would have reached 5-6 pages of indignation on here very quickly.Unfortunately now its just a mental shrug for many people and life goes on.Society is being conditioned to accept failure from our leaders and that can not be a good thing.
Our NSW hospital system is under a massive strain and will potentialy fail within a month as it has done in so many other countries.

Think it’s a bit harsh , yes in hindsight should have went in lockdown earlier , but you will find Victoria is on same trajectory as us and they went hard early .

There is no outrage, as at the moment what else can you expect the government to do , weld us all shut in our homes.

I don’t even blame scomo anymore about vaxx supply , I blame the media more than anyone as we had AZ for people to access and still do have millions in excess supply , but the scaremongering about the clots made normal people heistant ( yet it was good enough for the UK to use ) and now with the latest outbreak everyone is scrambling to get vaccinated

Automatically extended the essential worker travel permits from a fortnight to Sept 30

Yeah I got that email last night as well.

So here is a doozy.

My wife is a nurse in a medical centre. She was told that a patient she was in close contact with has tested positive and therefore she needs to self isolate for 14 days. 1st test came back negative yesterday.

The patient has a couple of members of the family that are positive. It is believed that they caught it at a funeral that does not appear to have adhered to guidelines.

Now here is the kicker. My wifes work has contacted her saying it may all be for nothing. The patient she dealt with may not be positive. Rather her sister has tested positive, but used the patients details (name, DOB & medicare number) when having a test. The patient will not provide confirmation of when they were tested & the result.

Good news my wife is at less risk.

Bad news she still has to isolate for 14 days and will lose pay.

They need to increase the penalties for those deliberately breaking serious health orders (including not isolating following a positive test) and those that lie about their status.

Beyond cranky to hear this.
Hope your wife is AOK through this.
I have not heard one of the press conferences call out the liars.
(Except they encourage good citizens to be snitches!)

Personally (I stress JUST me) disagree. If you bother to search my posts in the early stages of this thread, I have always been concerned that this exact thing was going to happen. In a lot of ways we have been disadvantaged by our early success in quarantining Australia from the virus. It taught us we could “beat” the virus an that zero cases was possible. As I said back then the problem is that the rest of the world has been through the crucible of this virus with the obvious cost of life but it has left us in the state where the rest of the world is a long way ahead of us in terms of immunity in both natural and vaccine (closer to any possible herd immunity) as well as adaptations of society in “post COVID” society. We have been left here on our island smugly thinking it wasn’t coming.

It’s here now, like it has been everywhere else and now generally aus society is questioning why we can’t just go back to March 2021. We are never going back.

Europe and Us are living in the post COVID world. We need to quickly get to the highest vaccination rate possible and get on with the job of changing our thinking and changing our society to the best it can be.

I health system is going to be smashed, I'm hopeful that it will be able to cope. Our wonderful health care workers are going to feel the brunt so I really feel for them.

If you know a health care worker, or any frontline worker, do something to show them how much they are appreciated. My wife who is a healthcare worker had a package arrive yesterday from Lush that was order by a friend just to show she is appreciated. Made a huge difference to what she is going through.
