Amazing finish to a great series.
R Harris take a bow.
D Warner take a bigger one.
The turn around in this side since boof took over is remarkable.
Batsman have scored 17 test centuries in 8 tests
Bowlers have taken 20 wickets 7 times out of the past 8 tests.
Superb captaincy from Clarke to boot.
Very happy.

Geez I'm glad we won. I couldn't wait another 2 years for the next series between these two great cricketing nations.

Not for the first time when we needed him, and on a 5th day wicket, Nathan Lyon had nothing. Not only no wickets, but he didnt even look to be troubling tail enders.

He does his part to keep an end tight and picks up a few wickets here and there when the team is on top or when he is attacked, but he struggles to manufacture wickets. I think its important to know that this is a limitation in his game. I suppose he is a finger spinning offie.

He's a pretty good option. I think watching Warne win games has hardened a belief that our spinner should be a match winner day 5\. Ideally they would be. But our pace attack is our strength and the spinner just has to complement the pace bowlers nicely.

Kimber did well to type this article with one free hand. Reads like he has banked a few of these moments and made plenty of withdrawals too.

I noticed it too Glen. I dont recall Ponting getting anywhere near the level of love from Kimber when he retired, despite a far loftier career.

Lyon has done better than any spinner of the post-Warne era, that's for sure. I'm not talking about him running through an attack and single-handedly winning us matches on day 5, but he has to contribute far more than he has done when conditions are favourable to spin and less so to fast bowling. He didnt trouble anyone today.

You can't tell me he or the team would be happy with his 4th innings contributions? Capetown and Adelaide are the two of note, but he hasn't taken a wicket or has otherwise been ineffective in numerous 4th innings of big matches now. It would be a mistake to gloss over it as a non-issue just because Harris plucked this one out of the fire for us.

Interestingly, since I posted my original comment, Cricinfo have written about his lack of impact in 4th innings:

"Lyon's issue is quite the opposite, as he loses potency the further a match goes on. Both his mentor John Davison and Warne are aware of this, but must work further with Lyon to find the key to last-day success."

http://www.espncricinfo.com/south-africa-v-australia-2013-14/content/story/725711.html

I'm not saying Lyon has nothing to learn. He can definately learn to bowl with more side spin on pitches that are breaking up.
But I do feel he cops a fair bit of flack too.

oh & btw Happy, Clarke obviously declared 4 overs too early

I was just amazed when I got home Tuesday night and saw how long we batted on for , I just couldn't see the logic

We got home and that's the main thing

I know this is a simplistic view , but if you beat the World Champs at home you should get the title of World No 1 side

Couple of interesting facts since our resurgance at the start of the Ashes:

Combining both test series, 5 v England and 3 v South Africa:

Australia has scored 5135 runs in their 16 innings at an average of 321/innings.
Opposition has scored 3803 runs in their 16 innings at an average of 238/innings.
Australia has secured 17 centuries in these matches
Opposition has secured 4 centuries in these matches.
Warner scored 1066 runs @74.3
Australia has lost 123 wickets out of 160 in their 16 innings costing 42 runs/wicket
Opposition has lost 153 wickets out of 160 in their 16 innings costing 25 runs/wicket
Australia declared in 8/16 innings
Opposition declared in 1/16 innings
Johnson took 59 wickets @ 15.7

It is pretty clear that the Australian batsmen and bowlers have dominated the 8 tests.

One more silly stat, Nathan Lyon's wicket has only been taken twice from the 16 innings he was involved in, that being the test we lost. In the 7 we won he was not dismissed either scoring red ink or not being required.

Big congrats on a hard fought and sucessful summer winning 7/8 tests when they went into both series as underdogs. Enjoy the break boys and look forward to seeing you in October for the 3 test series against the Pakies and December for the 4 tests against the Indians.

Have to disagree there Happy. Any team can pull a couple of Test victories outta their arse against the number 1 team in the world. South Africa have been the most dominant team in world cricket for a long time now and still deserve to be regarded as the best side in the world IMO. Steyne was basically reduced to a spectator in the 3rd Test and they still nearly beat the Aussies. (Not to forget that their greatest ever player retired only months before this series also).

Chances are that Warner, Johnson etc golden run of form will disappear just as quickly as it emerged, they need to prove themselves over the long haul just as South Africa has done recently.

Credit to the Aussies for their current form but everybody needs to hit their half-mongrel with a cold spoon before immortalizing this current Aussie team. Longevity and consistent form are the keys in deciding world rankings and rightly so, it wasn't that long ago that Johnson could barely get the ball to hit the pitch and Warner was just a T20 monkey with a big mouth.

awesome finish to the test. so glad the aussies won it as they really deserved to.

unfortunately, as ftb says, there may always be the spectre of steyn's injury hanging over the result. also have to agree that before proclaiming themselves as the best in the world, the aussies need a sustained period of success now.

i think the only gauge is the icc rankings? i guess until they are number 1 they cant really say they are number 1.

I hope not. We lost the Ashes in 2005 with McGrath having injury issues but overtime it's been forgotten and rightly so. Injuries and luck play as much of a part as a win as does form and umpiring decisions.

And I agree about the sustained period of success. South Africa have lost some leadership with Kallis and now Smith, as have England with Pieterson and Swann. But as always the game moves on and new players take the places of the games former top players but that usually takes some time. Australia has a real chance to have a good year or two at the top if they can keep the team healthy and in form.

yeh, i hope not either. good point you make alluding to history: regardless of what happened, who was injured, it will always be Australia 2-1.

heres hoping they can continue as they are!

Glen Maxwell is currently 70 off 26!
Setting Aus up very nicely chasing Pakistan's 191

Well we stuffed up that one. Should have batted first and then only Finch and Maxwell got into double figures. Dropped Umar Akmal when he was in the 20s and ended up getting out in the 90s. That was the match there.

If It was a real cricket game , I would be upset

Twenty 20 games don't really involve a great deal of talent in my opinion

Whatever team has the most amount of luck during the tournament will probably win

The best team in the world can have 3 bad overs against the worst team in the world and it is game over

Not sure why Hogg was in the team tbh. I would've had muirhead and even Doherty in front of him.

A great knock from maxwell but he needs to learn to get past the first 10 balls stage fairly safely then start hitting. We could've easily been 10/3 had Pakistan kept up the pressure.

Gotta say I've been watching afridi for a number of years and the thing about his bowing is that his figures are not always the best but he gets the wickets or stalls the runs when the team needs it the most.

Also another easy win for India :righton:
I'm hoping this year the get to the quarter finals first time since the inaugural WC. Bhuvi had figures of 3-0-3-0… Almost unheard of in t20

I still maintain that Shaun Tait cost us the Ashes in 2005

If we could of managed another 15-20 runs I reckon we win that test and that ridiculous shot he attempted :brick: :brick: :brick: :brick: :bash :rant

I think we're one bowling option short. I think our top 5 is the best in the world (Warner, Finch, Watto, Big Show and Bailey), but I think Hodge at 6 is a waste, we need Haddin in the side, so we basically are left 4 bowlers along with Watto as our fifth, and our only other option is Maxwell who barely classes as an all rounder. I'd like to see Haddin jump to 6 and play 5 bowlers, or bring in someone like Steve Smith who can throw down an over or two if required. We have the batting line up to score some huge totals, but our bowling is one option short.

Call me a bias Qlder , but I reckon Cutting is the option as our other all rounder in T20

Mitch Johnson makes a big difference as well imo
