Cricket Season Thread

Who cares about 20/20\. It’s like complaining about the Tigers losing a 9’s match. The real stuff starts next week, the Test series.

My rant is about the decline in standards. It’s not about t20 cricket.

Though I believe t20 has payed a part in the decline. Though primarily the total disrespect for shield and 1st grade cricket has enabled us to develop a group of young men who can bat a bit and bowl a bit and that’s about it!

How sad that the world is too fast for test cricket.

were you guys thinking the same thing when ODIs started?

without t20, cricket dies. No one has time and effort to stand in the heat for 5 days and 30% of the time not even get a result. the world has moved past that.

Well no, because World Series Cricket was around before I was born. Even so, I stopped caring about ODI's many many years ago. I only enjoy watching Test cricket, because it lives to it's name. T20 is A.D.D cricket, the game is engineered in favour of the batsman so much it isn't funny.

Without India, T20 dies. Why don't we create 2 over cricket? 3 ball cricket?

Faf Du Plessis batting out Day 5 against Australia back in 2012 was one of the best games I have seen.

i agree and luckily that was one of the rare test matches i've seen in the last 5 years

im probably around the same age as you and grown up on test cricket.

but the fact is general public can't do test matches. see how many kids are getting in to cricket because of big bash through milo cricket etc.

since starting work full time, i haven't seen a single test match for a full day. we either need to modify test cricket (for eg day night tests) or get used to shorter formats.

That's because the world has the attention span of a gnat.

or that our lives are busier, we are making ourselves more productive and we just don't have the time to sit in front of the tele or at a cricket ground for 8 hours straight player batting at 2 runs an over for 90 overs.

most of the test matches are playing on a weekday between 10am-6pm. Test cricket by itself isn't gonna survive.

Spare me. People are no busier today than they were 30 years ago. The difference is because today you can get anything you want by a virtual click of a button, instant gratification reigns. Some people don’t have the attention spans to watch a Test match that ebbs and flows for 5 days. One Test match that goes into the final session on the 5th day, Beats 100 20/20’s where all it takes to entertain the gnats is a few big hits into the grandstand.

And who said you have to sit in front of the TV for 5 days. They have these things called radios, that have been around much longer than TV’s. Not wanting to sit in front of the TV for 5 days is no excuse when there are other sources available.

I love both tests and 20/20's, I think most people do.
Deriding someones sporting preference is something i don't understand.

I'm 33\. I take time off work every year to make it to the SCG. That's why you have annual leave.

Or listen to the other Tests through radio. T20 is a joke and it erodes the Test mentality from young players. I agree it is perfectly suited to todays kids though, they have grown up on instant gratification and can't wait for anything.

Mike Whitney holding on at the G was one of the greatest days of all time..

x2 test cricket is the epitomy of cricket. i watch all forms of cricket but the lesser the length of the game the less i enjoy as it not designed to be a fair contest between bat and ball

The subtle art of cricket is willow against leather. The battle of bat against ball. Watching a legspinner weave his magic against a struggling batsman. Watching a batsman tough out a tirade of pace and then get on top. Watching the subtle art of swing bowling with 4 slips waiting in anticipation,

Modern cricket is killing this contest. Ridiculous bat developments; drop in pitches that are nothing but roads; shorter boundaries; bouncer minimisation; wides for 1 inch down leg; - all eroding the contest.

T20 is not a cricketing contest. It has been designed to thrill a new audience with clubbing the ball as far as possible. It has no interest in a contest between bat and ball. In my opinion, it’s just not cricket.

Not to mention it’s the most skilful form of the game.

Some good news in my opinion , finally we see that trying to force an allrounder is nowhere as important as having a Top 6 who get their spots for the right reasons

Looks like they were listening to Lawson (and 95% of Australian cricket loving public.)

And Gav Robertson , he was on Bill and Boz pushing the exact same point …...

Our best attack can get 20 wickets .....MM wasn't going to contribute with the ball /bat/field

Maybe his rendition of "Under the Southern Cross I stand " was outstanding

Robertson is a muppet, he has no idea about anything, even cricket and he played the game for his country. Another

Y'know what I mean Hap? I mean, you just gotta back yourself and stand up for what you believe in Hap. Y'know Hap? Hap? What am I Hap, a ham sandwich?

What a catch..On ya bike King Kohli..

Reminded me of a catch John Dyson (???) took against Pakistan at MCG many years ago to win the test in the last session.

Reminded me more of AB's catch off John Wright , one hand sprawled out full stretch

Lets hope this Test ends better than that one

Exciting start , pitch seems to be ballooning at times …..hopefully it flattens out by the time we have a hit

That catch at short leg would have been nice but good start. Let’s hope we keep the pressure on
