Mixed day, thought the Australians were average with the ball for the first hour, then bowled pretty good. Catching, terrible and ground fielding was not up to the usual standard.

One for at stumps is a good result, day two is usually the best day to bat. If a couple of guys can get big scores I think we can put the game out of reach for the Poms….it could also go pear shape

Weird day. On one hand we could have nailed them for 200 if the catching was better. On the other hand the pitch looks good and 280-ish was well under par. They lost a lot of wickets from slogball rather than the pitch doing a stack. Usman looked rock solid, Marnus is clearly in form. Be great to be ahead before Head and Marsh come in so they can really have a crack. Batting should be good on days 2 and 3 so hopefully we can get a 200+ run lead.

Pity about the 5 dropped catches
Only 1 to Smith was extremely difficult and the one Carey dropped very costly
Still we are on top and need good confident batting day 2

One thing I doubt the Poms have considered with Bazball is the time they are affording us to build an innings.

For example: 1st test - They took 78 overs to post 393, we took 40 more overs to post 7 less. This made them panic and in the second stanza they took 66 overs to post 273 for a 280 run lead. We were then given 97 overs to chase this down, which we managed with 27 balls to spare.

Bazball isnt the future, it is a fad. There are far too many variables for it to succeed more than playing a traditional innings. If both teams are employing it, it can work but if one side is going to grind an innings out over 100+ overs, it faces trouble.

They only lasted 55 overs into day 1. That is not going to help them unless they scored 500+. Hopefully our guys get settled before chasing. We may take another 120 overs, hell 150 it doesnt matter to us, before we get bowled out. They have to win, we only have to draw for an outright victory. If we play to our potential, time will not be their friend in this Test.

I think the secrete to combating Bazball is not to get sucked in by it and play your normal game. I think this series the Aussie have got sucked in a tad. Guys like Smith have tried to beat them at their game, rather than grind them into the dirt. We have also set ultra run saving fields to limit the carnage, rather than normal fields with plenty of people in catching positions.

The thing with Bazball it near impossible to keep the intensity up from ball one till the last ball, especially against a quality team. As Tucker said build a foundation and than let Head, Marsh and Carey put the cream on the cake.

Would have loved to see the Poms try it against the great Windies sides. Anyway it’s worked pretty well for the Poms so far but I think it has a short shelve life

Twice this year they’ve had a player hit over 180 runs in an innings in amazing time, and not win that Test. They are not game managing properly.

I 've enjoyed The Ashes . Wish you lot could have had a proper tour with county matches and stuff but I guess they are part of the past now.
That would be brilliant - I remember when that tour format was the usual.
And these Ashes tests have been fantastic - you just can't look away - there's always something about to happen!

I know this is a long time ago but just check out, as an example, the tour from 1977 (when Bob Massie went ballistic!) and see what games were actually played additional to the tests:

And sure, maybe the modern cricket programmes will not allow such a long tour, but some of the county games would be amazing.
Think 1972 Massie 16 wickets in Lords test .

9 off 82 balls looks patient when you are at the crease. When you get out it makes you look like a fool

In the context of the game I’ll take 8 from 82 over 8 from 5. The former is almost 14 overs which hopefully pays off later. But he looked in poor touch today.

They have an inform and overall a great batting lineup atm. As soon as a couple of them get into a lean spell (which will happen) they’ll lose pretty spectacularly.
