On this occasion Ponting is right...

Hauritz bowled ave to Crap...The Indian batsman toyed with him...it wouldn't have mattered what field he set....Hard to put fielders all over the boundry and in the stands...to his credit though he never gave up trying and his doosra to Tendulker was great...1 ball...

Maybe Warnie should shut his big mouth or come out of semi retirement and help out his country rather than taking pot shots from the comfort of his TWITTER....

I'd take 1 in a row at the moment!

I dont believe Ponting was right. If Hauritz wanted fieldsman on the point boundary, at long on, long off, etc. Then obviously he is struggling for confidence, and as a captain, it was up to Ponting to instill some confidence in him and say 'No you are a good enough bowler to have these fieldsman up'.

**Having those fieldsman back allowed Hauritz to bowl bad balls because there was protection on the boundary.**

In my opinion spinners get a lot of their wickets through building pressure, especially a bowler like Hauritz who doesnt turn it much, and with the fields set, the Indians werent under pressure at all.

Former Indian spinner Bishan Bedi claims Ponting "Is not a good spinners captain" and I feel he is right, he just does not know how to set fields for them, they are too defensive and it shows a lack of faith in them.

Jazza…c'mon mate....having fields back allowed him to bowl bad balls....riiiight....

He didn't cut it over there...no shame in that..He wasan't bowling well enough..I would even hazzard a guess if we had had Harbajan the result would have been different...Hauritz conceeded 22 from his first two overs on the last day and 11 in his first comeback over...that's when Pointing had the fields up...If it continued it would have been over by tea...

Right now we'd struggle to win 2-3 in a row. The only decent side we've won a series against recently was South Africa away last year before the Ashes. Every other decent side we've played has beaten us. If we didn't play rubbish sides like New Zealand, West Indies and Pakistan (who try to lose games), we'd struggle to win any games at all. We are currently 5th on the test rankings, and if we drop the Ashes this year, Ponting has to get the flick.

Good on Punter for giving it back to Warnie….its very easy to criticise when you are sitting on your arse with a chardonnay in your hand.

I feel sorry for Rick, he is an Australian legend and he's copping it from all angles by people who have no damn right to whinge, armchair critics who have no idea what they are on about. Now he also has to deal with former greats big noteing themselves on twitter.

Simple fact of the matter is he is in charge of a fairly weak attack at the moment. Give them a chance...they'll come good.

Too true Stryker. Laying the slipper in from the sideline while the team is going through a rebuilding phase isn't constructive. Like I said instead of criticising, get Warnie off his fat arse and get in the nets with Smith.

Ricky can only be thankful he hasn't copped the Kim Hughes treatment yet.

Like Jazza said we've been in the transition phase for way too long now and it's time we move on and stop recycling blokes in their 30's. It all starts with not letting Mike Hussey go any further, his footwork is terrible especially early in the innings and his consistency which he once had will never come back, I thought 2 years ago when he first hit this form slump, that he may restore it, but watching the way he batted against India, I'm totally convinced we've seen the best of him. Another bloke debuted at a stage of his career where you've only got limited time before you hang up the boots, same thing with North and Harris.

As for Ponting and Warnie, Warnie said what everybody wants to say but doesn't have the balls to say, and I totally agree with him, and it's not the first time Ponting has made a critical error, only have to go as far as the first test, NO fine leg and NO third man when there were about 20 runs that went down that region, could've been the difference between us winning or losing. Plus, I don't know why people are making such a big deal over the incident, Warnie didn't personally attack Ponting, just expressed his opinion like every body else on this forum is doing.

So should Ricky have the field up for Hauritz or at 3rd man, fine leg and point to stop the boundries and the 20 to 30 runs that went off 3 overs defending 200?

Mate Ricky and Shane are very close, they've lived together travelling the world for years. They are both legends of the game and have single handedly won test matches for their country many times. They have each others respect.

Warnie is more than entitled to express his opinion but he should do it like a man. Doing it through twitter was gutless and completely unconstructive.

Losing whilst representing your country would be a gutwrenching feeling. Coming off the field to find that your mates are sticking the boot in through the media would be even worse. Especially seeings as Ponting had a good game personally.

If Warnie or anyone else has a problem with Ricky's field placings they should offer advice in a constructive manner and in private.

Hey ..we are the No 1 One day team in the world by a long way…I did not know that...

Cmon Aussie...

well we have won the last 3 world cups haven't we???

Cameron White just lit up the Indians with a great knock. That along with a Clarke century and a solid knock by Hussey have set us up nicely for the second ODI.

Yeah we definetly are….as of the end of last season i'm pretty sure Huss was at the top of the ODI batsmens list as well.

I think the current Shield match being played in QLD is emphasising a bit of a problem with Aus cricket.
Outside NSW, Vic and to a lesser extent, Tasmania, there just seems to be a lack of quality/depth in the State sides.

A 2nd string NSW batting lineup made 262 against a full strength QLD attack.
Then a 2nd string NSW bowling lineup bowls a full strength QLD batting lineup out for 75 with extras top scoring. Now with QLD following on they're 2/16.

The gap just seems to be widening. I mean WA and QLD used to have the best batting lineups in the country and they would produce some quick bowlers as well, SA would produce a couple of batsman, maybe a spinner and a quickie, Victoria would produce some quicks and NSW would produce some batsman and spinners.

I think AFL has destroyed WA and SA cricket, and maybe the NRL has affected QLD cricket. Tassie doesnt have a national football code there although if AFL put a team there it would probably be the same as WA and SA. That only leaves NSW and Victoria who have the population and the resources to cope with other codes being there.

Once again AFL is affecting a sport I like and its p*ssing me off!!! Lol

You make good points Jazza, although I believe QLD has both the resources and the population to support both cricket and the football codes as well. I'd put it down to a generational shift at state level as well as national.

Also, who thinks Michael Clarke is still fit to play for Australia, let alone captain, after that shocking display last night? Two NSW batsman plus Johnny Hastings (a former Penriff boy) making the score look less embarrassing? Poor Smitty got smashed around but to their credit Sri Lanka also played very well.

Can't wait until the real cricket starts…

I just noticed NSW have won by an innings, QLD bowled out for under 100 again, Mark Cameron took 10 wickets for the match, looks like we're going to have a juicy first test surface.

But yeh one example of what the AFL has done to States is the decision that Mitch Marsh had to make, he had to decide between cricket and AFL. He chose cricket but not everyone will. A lot of the big quicks that WA produced are now ruckman and forwards wanting to play for West Coast and Fremantle. While they didnt produce a lot Test greats, they still produced good quicks such as Alderman, Reid, Angel, Julian, Nicholson and of course the one and only D.K Lillee. In the last 10 years, their one and only top quick has been Magoffin and he's initially from QLD.

Ive noticed a decline in cricket in those states has coincided with the AFL introducing West Coast in 1987 and Fremantle in 1995\. Same with SA, Adelaide was introduced in 1991 and Port Adelaide in 1997.
The affects werent felt initially but I think the affects are being felt now as this is really the first generation of athletes who have to make a really serious and tough decision about whether to play cricket or AFL as they now have a genuine chance of playing AFL for their city now.

With Clarke playing 20/20s, he's definitely not a 20/20 player and to be honest I would rather have Ponting play and captain 20/20s and retire from ODIs with Clarke captaining those. They dont play a lot of 20/20s so if anything it will ease the burden on Ponting more then now where he still plays ODIs and also, they tend to select young sides for 20/20\. Ponting is a strong enough hitter and good enough batsmen for 20/20s and I think it would be good for the youngsters to be around him even though I tend to criticise his tactics!

But then I dont really care about 20/20s, they say the crowds love it, maybe they love it because they dont play as many as ODIs. If they played 10 20/20s this Summer instead of ODIs, I dont think the crowds would be much different to the ODI crowds tbh.

Your right Jazza. Cricket is not the only loser in AFL's (it would be naive to think league and soccer don't either) winning minds of young athletes. Athletics is one. Basketball is another. It is one of the most popular junior sports but loses lots of its support as these guys grow. So many AFL players were junior reps in basketball, cricket the same. Not a lot you can do. You play the game you feel you can achieve the most at and love to play the most.

On the Aussie side, Ferguson and Khawaja are knocking on the door pretty well. North and Hussey are in trouble but I can't see any changes being made before the Ashes, unless they are forced via injury or there is an absolute horror run of form. Hauritz is the spinning man. Smith is too inconsistent and is more of a batsman anyway. A spinner is needed for balance too so you can't play 4 paceman. Haddin looks to be injury free. Siddle too. Whether he is in front of Hilfenhaus and Bollinger is another question. I think not. Johnson the other quick.

On a side-note, scored my 2nd century on the weekend. We were chasing down 247 and feel all out for 233\. Couldn't find anyone to hand around with me. Despite the good score it feels empty when you don't win.

1st day nighter (50/50) match aust v sri lanka about to start on channel 9\. hopefully aust get off to a good start. ponting not playing, at his grandmothers funeral i think.

kool, nicely done!

i got my league tenpin bowling average over 160 last night and my team is coming first out of thirteen teams going by total pinfall

One of the all time poor bowling efforts. Doherty 4/46 off his 10, the rest of them took 2 for about 200 from their 40 overs. Mathews and Malinga 130+ for the 9th wicket… You'd think Clarke would bring some spinners on...

Finally Clarke brings himself on with the Sri Lankans needing 3 to win from 7 overs...
