Cricket Season Thread

I hate to see a young bloke like Marsh squandering his opportunity to play for Australia. Cricket can be so fickle (bit like my golf game) one minute a player is poorly out of form then the next a near shining light. There must be technique and cognitive issues that the coaching group can deal with if the selectors are going to continue to select marsh.

I think long term maybe Clarke may seriously have to step up to 3 and Watson at 5

Unfortunately unless some talent steps up in the next 2 years we won't have a choice

That is until some talent steps up and Clarke can then bat at 4

Yes I agree Happy. Clarke or Ponting should be 3 and the other at 4\. Watson seems to me to be a natural number 6 being a counter-attacker and with his opening experience will be well suited to facing the second new ball.

What do you think an appropriate point to declare will be ??

I would like to have 5 sessions at them to be on the safe side and approximately 500 lead

I think the lead is already close to being enough. I'd leaving long enough to run them around in the field in the heat for a bit longer. I'd be thinking sometime around drinks between lunch and tea.

Gee it could be time for the Zimbos to have another break from test cricket…

NZ 7/495 (dec)
ZIM 51 and 3/5

If you enjoy watching sporting torture it's on Fox Sports 3.

As soon as I type that… timber! 2/8 Marsh out.

Wanted: 1 spine. Please contact the Australian top order

Still not convinced by Shaun Marsh at test level. He's starting to do what he does at 1st class level. Looks great when he's in form but fails a lot. Big test for the Rickster at his home test.

Khawaja must be scratching his head as to why he got dropped for Marsh - at least UK looks like he is going to get some runs.

Plus :
No 3 is the most crucial position in the batting lineup - Marsh was picked solely on past performances and has been rushed back in underdone. It has been shown that runs in mickey mouse games do not guarantee similar form at test level - Marsh may well be the answer at 3 in the long run but his technique and form are way too rusty at the moment.

Hate to gloat but i will anyway.

I wonder what Greg Chappell thinks about the Indian line up?
He was the one that tried to initiate change and bring some youth into the Indian side about 5 years ago, to the horror of the Indian public and its management.

I imagine everytime Chappell hears the word India he shaves his beard off , packs his suitcases and rings the embassy

He was bloody lucky to get out of India alive last time he coached them

I remember Roy Slaven suggesting Greg Chappell was just coaching India as "a gee-up" and that everyone in world cricket knew he wasn't being serious!

That's what happens when you go against the regime. After this series just gone and the catty swipes the Indians took at Chappell prior to the series starting I'm sure he's now giggling his arse off.

And as I finished typing up my last post, I find the following story on the SMH.

Looks like Chappelli doesn't mind rubbing salt into the wounds

Yeah well he is right CB

Dravid was their best performer in England and Tendulkar picks himself but these guys need to make way for the younger guys Best performer Kohli and he was the youngest batsman .

I know he's right mate, about as subtle as a sledgehammer too which is what the Indians need. The BCCI won't listen though, if they ever moved Tendulkar on before he was ready they'd be run out of India.

Laxman definitely needs a shove. As CB notes, Dravid was excellent against India but looked hopelessly out of touch here. So I think Laxman should be dropped now for a younger guy and Dravid is on his last warning. Being out of form is one thing but his defence and footwork looked like age had caught up to him.

Picking Tendulkar for the ODI is a joke especially seeing as though he was out of that team (so I was led to believe anyway). You can only think it has more to do with this stupid 100 x 100s they endlessly harp on about…

Dravid should be the last out of the ageing trio to be dropped. He was the only one who stood up against the English… I thought it was ironic how he and Shaun Marsh paralleled each other in the sense they came into this series after playing well in their previous series (taking into account that Marsh was injured,) only to struggle badly.

Laxman should be definitely marched, and Tendulkar should be on notice, but we all know the Grand Poobah does things as he pleases. If anyone thinks the BCCI is bad now, I shudder to think what they'd be like if Tendulkar ever ends up in the top job there.

Well another summer of test cricket over, what am i gunna watch until the footy starts? i don't like t20 but the odi's might see me through to the 1st of march. The Indians need a good clean out but you couldn't get rid of sachin. The Indian public would riot if they sacked him, he'd need to go out on his own terms. Like all champions. I believe that should happen to Ricky as well, Let him decide when he should go. If they would have sacked Ricky when he was having a bit of trouble we would have missed out on the gutsy hundreds he has scored against the indians and quite possibly lost the series. They know when it's time, not us,definatly not the news papers.

Yeah agree with mostly what you are saying Kaz but you can't let these guys play forever

They are no different from you or I in the fact they want to make the bucks while they can to try and set themselves up for life

If they are still performing that's fine and Ricky appears to still have it but if they begin to lose form someone still needs to be there to tap them on the shoulder and let them know its time

It would be a shame to see Ricky go on too long He is arguably one of the best batsman in his era and to ruin his legacy for a few extra bucks would be disappointing

It is hard to expect the guys to retire when the money is so attractive. Every year someone like Ricky sticks it out means a lot of cash coming his way. If I was on that kind of money I'd be sticking it out as best I could too! But you're spot on in saying that's when selectors need to have a quiet word.
