Cricket Season Thread

Just OT a bit, is anyone else getting sick of these commentators constantly crapping on about Alcatraz? I have seen a couple of episodes and gave up as it is VERY mediocre.

I would be surprised if it lasts a full season before it is yanked.

Ch 9 do it every Summer. Probably because the new ratings season begins around this time of year after the Summer break.
They started with Underbelly some years ago, then it was 1 vs 100 (How long did that last?), the Winter Olympics and there was another show a year or two ago, I can't remember what it was called but the ad always showed a space ship flying into Sydney Harbour.

The most annoying part is when the commentators feign some interest in the shows.

I think the constant advertising turns viewers away because really the only show that has lasted has been Underbelly.

Apparently ch 9 isnt too bad compared to over in India. I've read that they sometimes have ads in between deliveries and almost constantly have ads across the screen. Not to mention the commentators plugging whenever they can.

It's not often I agree with Tony Grieg, but by golly some in-swinging yorkers would have been quite handy in that last over.

He had two cracks at a yorker - one was a half-volley that went for six and the other was an above-the-wasts full toss. To be a "death" bowler in ODI cricket you really need to have better control than that.

The selection panel has named the squad for the rest of the ODI series:

Clarke ©
Ponting (Captain for Fridays match)
Warner (vc)
Wade (wk)
Christian
Doherty
Forrest
Hilfenhaus
D Hussey
M Hussey
Lee
M Marsh
McKay
Starc

Probably a good decision for Ponting to be captain for the one game, it shouldn't hurt where as if Warner was given the captaincy I think it could do more harm at this stage of his career then good.

Interesting that Haddin has been left out, I think it's a good decision, I think Wade has been ready for a while and his performances have been pretty good so far.

Lee is also in for Harris, I'd say Harris' poor fielding the other night has cost him.

Kinda feel for Harris. I'd have the following for Friday:

Warner
Wade
Ponting
Forrest
M Hussey
D Hussey
Christian
Lee
McKay
Starc
Doherty

12th: Hilfenhaus

Hussey in for Clarke, Forrest keeps his spot. Lee for Harris. Minimal changes.

That'd be my side too. I'd like to squeeze M Marsh in there but I think Christian deserves another go based on his good form. Really Marsh can't be slotted in anywhere else, if he replaces a batsman, our batting will look very shallow and if he replaces a bowler, our bowling will look weak.

Hopefully the stupid selectors go back to an opening partnership of Warner and Wade. Changing the openers may have had a bit to do with our sub par score on Sunday.

Warner and Ponting not getting off to a good start probably had something to do with it too

Agree with all of you guys there. I mean I could maybe understand why they dropped Wade down the order IF they replaced him with another opening batsman. There was really no point at all for Ponting opening with Wade playing down the order, especially as Wade likes to play himself in. I can only think the selectors had already decided that Wade was going to play for the rest of the ODI series so they wanted to play Ponting into some form.

I'm not a 100% convinced about Forrest either but, he has shown when he is in form, he can certainly play, its just a question of how often he is in that form.

I'm not fully convinced about Warner either funnily enough, I think he'll come around eventually but when it come's to ODIs he seem to get confused between batting the full 50 overs and scoring quickly first up. I guess the advantage of Test matches is with the field up in the slips, even if he is defensive, he still scores quickly anyway. In 20/20s with the ring field, he has the licence to slog. Where as in ODI's with the ring field, if he is defensive and tries to bat the full 50, he wont score. If he slogs like in 20/20s and gets out, people are going to jump all over his back.

I think he needs to take a Gilchrist approach, have a carefree attitude, a clear mind and just show his authority to the opposition. I remember Gilchrist would regularly hit the first ball for 4 and also if he got dropped, he would almost always wack the next delivery for 4 just to demoralise the opposition even more.

What did you guys think of Steve Waughs whinge about punter being recalled as captain in the pups absence? Is there some jealousy there? I dont recall too many of Pontings detractors praising his last test series yet now he has failed twice in a row they are coming back from under their rocks.

He wants a young, inexperienced player who is still finding his feet to be given the added responsibility of captaincy? To what end? It'll only be for 1 or 2 games…Warner already cops enough pressure from the way the channel 9 commentary team drool over him. Let him be.

Sometimes these ex-players are morons.

I don't believe Waugh had any need to weigh in on this. As you said, it's one game. If it were for the entire series, Warner should have received the honour.

Ponting is this country's most successful ODI captain and the game's most successful Test captain. I wonder if Ponting hit tons in his first two games whether Waugh would have even piped up.

Yeah exactly…Remember punter had to put up with this crap from Warne and his ridiculous tweets as well.

I say Warner is way down the list for a 'one off' captaincy gig. If not punter than either of the Husseys would do for mine. They deserve the honor more at this stage and would do a far better job. As it stands we have an experienced captain in the side and it stands to reason that he got the job.

Stryker I dunno mate I think the selectors can't win either way .

Pick Ponting and they get accused of not looking towards the future , Pick Warner for example and they are going for someone too inexperienced

Why not have a VC named and he gets the role . Simple imo

I can see both sides of the story.

The selectors made Warner vice captain and he has only been vice captain for a few matches. In fact he has not even been in the Aus side or even the NSW side for long, and feel that even although he has got leadership potential, it is too early to be the captain. He seems to be getting groomed as a captain at an earlier time then what Clarke did.

I think Waugh just believes in the theory that when you pick a vice captain, he is the one that is in line to take over when the captain is injured. I think he was just asked at a conference what his opinion was and that's what he believes. Also after being part of the Argus review he may be a bit frustrated in regards to the treatment of Brad Haddin.

Yeah understand…I suppose the question should be then, why is Warner the VC?

Does he do a lot of the talking out on the field?....seems he spends a lot of time riding the boundary as he is superb in the outfield. Captaining your country is a massive honor that should be a reward for effort. I stand by my theory that for a 'one off' occasion, Ricky, Michael or Dave Hussey were the only real candidates. They have put the work in, are true leaders and are expert ODI players.

A one off one-dayer where the captain is injured. Do you go with the previous captain or someone set to take the reigns in the future? In my opinion they got it wrong. Also, if Warner wasn't going to get the job they should have given it to Mike Hussey in my opinion as Ponting has said he doesn't want the role anymore.
