The traditional "pick and stick " selection
Policy has finally come home to bite
Kwajaja simply out of form scores 0 & 6 off 20 & 23 balls
Marnus no positive intent and technique problems .Hes one of best fielders but you can't open for Aust just because you field well
Cam Green - horror debut at 3 survived 3 balls and 2 balls for one scoring shot being a miss hit inside edge .Doesnt bowl and was almost unseen in the field
He can't justify selection at all
Smith good 1st innings but out cheap in 2nd dig in his most common flaw the jump across to outside off and another LBW
Head - two fails but that's rare he's saved our ass many times
Carey 2 digs 21 & 43 however his 1st innings dismissal with his stupid reverse sweep at a ball on middle stump has to stop .Also a little sloppy with the gloves
SO Who has performed ?
With the bat Smith and Webster 1st innings
Starc and Carey 2nd innings
With the ball Cummings and Starc 1st innings
Starc only with 2 wickets and a 3rd dropped by Smith 2nd innings team members that need to be replaced for the ashes unless they find real form in the Carribean are
Kwajaja ,Labuschagne , Green and maybe Lyon
I think Konstas and Inglis and Boland need a chance
Pick on FORM

We need to pick up 8 wickets for about 70 to retain the WTC mace tonight
Highly unlikely bit too many guys looking rusty and guess what playing the bloody IPL is terrible preparation for an important test
IMHO - franchise 20/20 smash and bash cricket is a blight on our game

We have serious batting line up issues for the Ashes
Konstas is one answer but need more
Uzzie will turn 39 during ashes ,Marnus out of form ,Green not a no 3 and just got out twice in 5 balls .Reading a lot of press backing up these issues
Got to find answers vs Windies
Imagine the horror if we lose the ashes to the poms in Australia
Last time they were here we won 4-0 ( only rain in Sydney stopped it being 5-0 )
So far only certain ashes starters imo
Konstas ,Smith ,Head ,Carey ,Cummins ,Starc , Hazelwood / Boland

Interesting stat Lyon in his career has bowled about 500 balls to Aiden Markham without dismissing him once !
I'm afraid the G.O.A.T is not the goat anymore
Fantastic career but now too old

He was never a GOAT, unless you mean 🐐
It started as a sarcastic joke thing. He’s always been average, and rarely gets us home.

He has always been a slightly above average test spinner and has worked hard to get the wickets he has.We have had better spinners get less wickets imho.

As I said before m, You don’t get 500 test wickets without being able to bowl, but his start to his test career was gifted due to the selectors new pick and stick mentality after churning through a few others.

So far this match
Cummins 7 wickets
Starc 5 wickets + 2 dropped catches
Hazelwood 1 wicket
Lyon 0 wickets
One run out
Tells a bit of a story - we have a TWO pronged bowling attack

That’s a bit rough on Hazo, but yeah.
I reckon if green can’t bowl then I’m looking at someone else. He had good form with the bat in Pomlandia coming into this game. 🤷‍♂️. But then there are a few others that need replacing too.
It as I’ve said many times the selectors have been average and don’t seem to be planning for the future.

The pitch hasn’t helped this game but ya get that in test matches.

Two bowlers ineffective
In this match Lyon bowled 31 overs 186 balls 0 wickets
Hazelwood bowled 32 overs 192 balls 1 wicket
Not much of a strike rate
Conclusion : Lyon passed his use by date
Also imo Boland would have done better than Hazelwood
Like in last WTC test final !

Cam Green out twice in 5 balls ,Cant bowl also I don't recall him actually fielding a ball .Talk about zero contribution

Easy in hind sight.
Just remind yourself and google Bolands last game for Oz in Pomland. I was surprised he was even on the plane but then they were stupid enough to keep sending Lil Davy.
Hazo has been good for us for a long time and in Poland, sure he’s been light on for wickets on a bowling pitch for two days, but I reckon there’s a few others I’d replace before him that would have made a difference, like our 1, 2, and 3, and our spinner.

Lyon has been useless since his calf injury in the last Ashes series in England. He was once a reasonable lower order batsman too but not anymore. He contributes nothing with bat or ball. Just going through the motions cashing up for retirement.

Last WTC final in 2023 at the Oval
Boland 5 wickets

Starc gets wicket in last over umpire gives not out
Replays shows he knicked it but no reviews left
Meaningless anyway they only needed 1 run
But for stats should have won by 4 wickets instead of 5 wickets and Starc should have got 4 for instead of 3 for
Congrats South Africa their first ever win in an ICC final in ANY CODE
Totally out batted us
Our batting line up basically failed !

A good result for S.Africa and cricket, hopefully now our selectors do what has been obvious to most of our supporters for quite a while.A massive change is required in our top order and quickly,i have no doubt they can still flog the poms 4 -0 or 4-1 but for future changes need to be made.

At the very least the selectors can have a good long hard look at themselves from this game.

I have no idea what selectors were thinking with Marnus, obviously he did better than some of the other guys but seriously what. Konstas or Inglis would have been much better selections and I can only think of experience being a reason they went differently but still they kept Webster so doesn't make much sense. Not sure of Green's form but he's been so much worse than the hype he is given in the Test arena.

Then the decision to drop Boland is also coming back to bite. Boland has been outstanding for probably all but 3 games in his whole career, 2 in the ashes and one in India (which hardly any pace bowler does well in).

Lyon I understand the hate but realistically there aren't many replacement options available. In the Sri Lanka series Kuhnemann and Lyon took the same amount of wickets in 3/4 innings with Kuhnemann taking 2 more in another. Lyon also generally took wickets of higher order batsmen compared to Kuhnemann in that series as well. Would be good if we could develop more quality spinners though.

Hopefully a bit of a wake-up call to the selectors so we can make some changes for I think West Indies next then the Ashes. Time to start looking at the future as Khawaja and Lyon will probably be done after next series, Smith and Starc probably not too long to follow either.

Also well done South Africa, they've been very strong in tests recently.
