Cyclone Alfred

Also just to take away fear of the unknown, if you were living in Brisbane in 2017 when we got the tail end of Cyclone Debbie you have already experienced the predicted winds. Brisbane Airport had a recording of 160km/hr.
If you were living in Brisbane in 2022 you've experienced the 3 days of intense rainfall kike nothing you've ever seen before, much more than the predicted rainfall this time.
So you've been through it before. You know what to expect, you got through it last time, you'll get through it again

Just for clarity, if you're in a house or apartment built since 2000 and covered by as2047 for your windows and sliding doors 130km/hr winds will NOT blow out the glass.
Australian standards have a wind rating for windows that means no cyclone will EVER break them (unless a tree branch or trampoline accompanies it).
If you're in an older Queenslander I have no idea what the wind rating for older glazing is.
Also, try not to be a tool and panic buy. The world has enough tools.
Too late.

People have embarrassed themselves and cleared many shelves already. Shame.

Get yourself down to Bunnings and get some packing tape for the windows.
I thought the advice was to evacuate Bribie and Fraser?

Fraser Island and Morton island have been told to , bribie has a road bridge to main land , we are told to get ready , pack loose stuff up or put it inside etc , local mitre 10 run out of torches , candles , rope , gas , so folks are preparing , we have moved all small stuff inside and ropes down tables and chairs on balcony to the rails so they should be good , il def head down for some packing tape , thanks for the reminder , il have it ready for Thursday morning as we will def know what it is doing by then , at present Bribie is right in the centre of the impact area if it misses us it’s Brisbane , cheers , ps the wind out side today would not blow a candle out , calm before the storm

Is your place facing the coast?
No mate we face the passage and have a park in front of us so we get some strong winds due to no buildings in front , was windy yesterday but today is very mild winds with a gust hear and there , calm before the storm maybe ( we are in the suburb of Bongaree on the main road )

Spot on the tail end of Debbie was pretty strong and I said to my wife this is the strongest winds I’ve seen , it was shaking the windows , took heaps of trees out and put about 4 yachts on the rock wall and beach in the passage at bribie island , we had just moved up from Sydney 2 months before the cyclone

How is the weather today? I've heard on the radio that the seas are building with beach erosion all along the coast.
I'm at lake cathie just south of Port macquarie. Swell starting to build. Council is sureing up the lake with a rock wall as I type. Must be expecting a big surge.

Thanks. My parents lived at Old Bar for many years and I have great fond memories of the place and the beach. I was shocked last year when I dropped in and saw the beach how badly eroded it was. I'd hate to think of it after this. Reckon the people with houses along Lewis St and Pacific St will be worrying as they've already lost a lot of the dunes between them and the sea. I've just given a donation to Red Cross in anticipation.

I live literally about 2 minutes drive from cbus at Robina, were hunkering down, we will get through it, the guys up north go through it all the time. I never forget the hurricane that hit us Christmas night 2023. Well over 200km wind and a massive storm, only lasted a wee bit, but wow did it do a ton of damage. Iv got mates I work with whose homes still arn't totally fixed. As long as everyone's healthy we can replace things, you can never replace people. Everyone affected, we will get through this stay safe and fingers crossed we all still have power and internet to watch the mighty Tigers kick off the beginning of a new era on Friday night. Stay safe gang.

To all of you about to be affected by this I'm sure the whole forum is hoping you get through this unhurt and the smallest amount of damage possible our thoughts are with you.

To everyone in the affected areas stay safe for the duration of the cyclone, property can be replaced but people can't.We are lucky that we live in Australia because every effort will be made to get things back to normal no matter who you voted for.
Follow instructions from the experts no matter how much you disagree with what they say.Stay safe all up there.

Can I ask a maybe stupid question.
All the new estates have underground power, there are no overhead lines to come down in a storm.
When the NBN was rolled out why didn't the government roll out undergrounding all the power lines at the same time?

Extremely costly. Extremely.
The infrastructure materials required are larger. Pits, Conduits, cables etc...
The civil work, especially putting HV lines underground is really invasive as it is all new trenching required. You cannot use existing in most cases.
Additionally, maintanence of the assets is a lot harder, therefore an extremely extensive system of access points would be required at a deep level. This takes a lot of time.

It was considered as an option during the GFC. The government went for pink batts instead to push money out into households to lift the economy. Underground power would have produced a good result but it was way, way too expensive and not practical for a whole lot of reasons.
Pink batts virtually ended Peter Garrett's political career, not that it was going that well at the time.

You've mentioned before that's your field of work, yeh?

Sounds like you’re well prepared. I’ve been in a few, they can test your nerves, especially when the windows and whole building starts shaking like it’s been possessed by a poltergeist.
Oh, get the good quality tape. I found the thin stuff usually has a cheap adhesive which is hard to get off. Good luck! 🤞

Yes we do UG installations and civil works.
Another thing to consider is that the easements, pathways etc are already chockablock with undergound servivecs. You have LV Power for street lighting and signage, gas, optic fibre, water, stormwater and sewrage. The extreme difficulty in digging trenches and providing pathways through all that is costly enough but add on the costs of substations, connection pillars, inspection pits...it would cost each household multiple tens of thousands of dollars.
How much of that do you reckon the government would pick up?

I could take a wild guess..

The two AFL games this weekend (Thurs/Gabba & Sat/Gold cst) have been postponed

Youd think Dolphins Souths will be the same
