Dale Finucane

The two players at Melbourne I would've paid stupid money for were Brandon Smith and Nicho Hynes. They were the ones leading that team and dominating when Munster, Hughes, Papenhuyzen and Grant were all out. We missed the boat on Hynes but we need a player like Smith even more: he just seems like his attitude would be infectious. Be creative and offer Melbourne some of our young talent that they seem to do such a good job of developing (provided they are on board with it as an opportunity).

Cameron Smith says Finucane would be a “perfect example” to lead the Wests Tigers:

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/07/08/smith-says-finucane-would-be-a-perfect-example-to-lead-the-wests-tigers/

NRL great Cameron Smith believes his former Storm teammate Dale Finucane would be the perfect leader for the Wests Tigers to put them on the “right track”.

Finucane boasts an impressive career with Melbourne, playing in six grand finals and winning two premierships, many question why on earth a player of his calibre would even consider heading to Leichhardt during such a tough period.

Cameron Smith believes the answer is because the Storm captain could lead as the “perfect example” for the Tigers.

“Talking along the lines of the Tigers fans craving a guy to lead them, perfect example Dale Finucane,” said Smith on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“He is a man that lives and breathes rugby league,

“And is someone that you would just chuck into that system and go, 'Hey boys follow this man right now, do what he does every day and we’ll be on the right track'.”

Finucane is off contract at the end of the 2021 season and a move to the struggling Tigers may not be too far fetched.

The great Cammy's comments belong in the Finucane thread..

Cooper has said it ...Cam has said it ...yet the nuffies in charge of the WT's can't see it

If that isn't proof to any person that our recruitment and retention that we are so off the mark in these areas .....nothing will .....

Buy a touching plaque ...bury us now please .....RIP WT's 1999 -2025 ......

Would you pay $950K pa for it?

That is reportedly what he wants to come here.

It was a figure Paul Kent pulled from where the sun doesn't shine .......

Not where I got it from

Thank God you have been following iwasright's posts ...I'd totally forgotten about him .....

LOL, only for comedy value. He would give us the scoop a couple of days after Finucane arrives at training.

Edit ; Turns out it was all just a dream....

Storm would probably want a player in order to release Smith for 2022
As much as I would not like to see it do you look at Simpkin or Liddle but he has just re signed

Player swaps are fantasies in the NRL. They don't really exist. They can definitely have one of them though. We keep the other as a utility.

Feel free to direct this where ever you see fit Geo.
Finucane will cost us at least $750. And probably 3 contract years.

Appears the dragons have signed Sua for $550 a season.

“St George Illawarra
have at least landed the signature of Jadyn Su’A for the next three-years on a deal worth $1.65 million.”

That's a lot...

I don't think so for a SOO quality player.. we have Packer on like 750k and he does nothing.. He would fit straight into the starting 13 for us and add the aggression we need... But oh well we are asleep at the wheel and expect people to come knocking our door down and not the other way around.

For S'ua..

Yes S'ua.. 550k for a SOO player for a team like us I would not have a problem with it.

Yeah well I draw a distinction between a State of Origin quality player and a player who happens to have played some State of Origin. Nathan Merritt, James McManus, Jamie Buhrer, Justin Poore, Nathan Peats, Peter Wallace, Dunamis Lui, Corey Allan, Moses Mbye, Tim Glasby, Matt Ballin, David Stagg and various others have all played State of Origin but I wouldn't have thrown any more money at them just because of that fact. Sometimes depth is poor and lesser quality players (like Su'A) get selected.

Not saying his is a proven rep player as he is only 23 years old but he would be an upgrade on all our current squad. People have got to understand where we are as a club and that no one wants to come here so Storm or Rooster might of got him for 450-500k but clubs like us have to pay some more until we start winning (Years away it seems). Look I am not saying we should of offered 600k for him because I would rather add another 100k and go after Funicane for 650-700k but for me 550k for S'au is a good pickup for Dragons.

It's very very rare. It only exists if two clubs and two players agree to it. There is no trade system in place.

even 850k is probably too much
850k - 950k for Brandon Smith YES

I bet the market pays Finucane 800 k .....

market pays 800k we would have needed 850k or 900k you would think too much

I'd be prepared to pay him 850 the 1st 2 seasons ....then taper it off but offer incentives in year 3 and a 4th year in our favour as a option .....as I said previously ...I see a lot of Gallen in Finucane ...no reason he still can't be playing good footy in 4 years time .....worst come to worst you end up medically retiring him ....

We need to start thinking like the Top sides in some areas ....

@Pascoe @Hartigan

This needs to be pinned for recruitment

Sure, but we at least created a blueprint for it last season. We are not doing well at the traditional methods of recruitment (i.e. be a desirable destination or throw stupid money to outbid the market) so it wouldn't hurt to try being creative.

Smith is under contract for next year so Melbourne have a say in whether or not he's released. We can make ourselves desirable to Smith by throwing stupid money at him, but then so could other clubs. Our advantage over other clubs lies in what we could offer Melbourne, given we have some of the best young talent in the league.

Smith wants his extra $400K next year and needs a release from Melbourne to get it. We can help get that release by giving up someone who, let's face it, is probably not going to be kicking and screaming about the prospect of developing their career in the best system in the game. Worth exploring.

That is insane money, for effectively a good member of a forward pack, not a damaging runner or especially lethal tackler, just someone who gets through the work.
***Where has that figure come from?***
What is he believed to be on at the storm?

It was posted here from Willow last night from a good source and backs up The Poms version that Finucane isnt serious about coming here and we arent his first or even second choice.

Apparently Finucane told Michelle Bishop today that there are 8 clubs.

Im so glad to hear that about 8 clubs chasing him..but I dont believe it for a moment..

He HAS BEEN a great workhorse,no more no less, but honestly isnt close to being a game changer at his peak & at this stage of his career wldnt make the top 6 most valuable forwards at the Storm(Smith,Grant,Welch,Asofa,Jessie Bromwich,Kaufusi)..which is why hes out for a final payday
.... am sure hoping it wont be us!

Why should we pay him more than what Melbourne are prepared to pay him? He isn't going to play any better for us than he has for them. We shouldn't be that desperate.

His manager has stated his future will be settled by the end of July which fits in as he probably didn't want any distractions during SOO and with other contenders supposedly pick up Susan and TPJ we may be an outside chance for Finucane

Finucane wants 700k per year on a minimum 3 year deal with 4th year option in his favor. So that's at least 2.1 mil for 3 years. Now if more than 1 club offers that sort of coin (he's not earning that much at the Storm), then it probably becomes a bidding war. If he can't stay at the Storm, I don't know if he has a preference outside of them. I don't think he's going down the same path as TPJ and demanding more to play for certain clubs.

Didnt you say last night $950K?

At $700K I'd be tempted to say yes even at the 4 years, at least one too many but....
