Clubs are littered with ex players no one cares when your winning.
They sure are…
Show me one other club with 4 coaches that all played for the club?
a coach that has 1 year experience (in any grade) and 2 assistants that have 1 year experience between them (in any grade)

And no one does care when you’re winning - but 1: we’re not winning and 2: we won’t be winning anytime soon

Whoa. The important thing here is DNA and knowing that the board has a more hands on approach.
I couldn’t believe that possibly the most important part of Maguire’s performance review before he was sacked, was for the board to have more say in hiring and firing assistant coaches.
It’s taken a couple of years, but they’re finally there. They just needed that novice coach.
Any one who thinks this isn’t a play to get the heat off those at the top is dead set dreaming…
No matter what they do (or don’t do)
the golden boys for this club can never be taken to task or held accountable for lack of performance.
And that will suit the admin just fine…

This just proves how this stuff is overrated. He hasn't been a good signing for Cronulla at all.
Has he?

Because Cronulla signed him for "leadership" not "performance".

Stats wise, yes Dale Finucane sucks. Totally bad signing that hasn't delivered on the field.

Yet under a rookie coach in Craig Fitzgibbon they make the finals with a roster that is decent but not spectacular. I wonder if Dale's attitude is helping the side lift. What I like is that Cronulla went "we have a rookie coach, lets get players that are easy to coach"...

Yep. He definitely hasn't delivered because on field performance matters above everything else. I think their roster is pretty good. I think Cronulla have underperformed and I think Finuacane's salary is a problem for them.

Never sign a player for leadership alone. Api provides great leadership but his on-field performances are fantastic.

I reckon you need a quality squad and typically a couple of real stars. If you are paying money for leadership and not on-field results it makes developing that squad a lot harder.

EXACTLY!!

Leadership - That's for the coaches and admin....
If they've bought him for on field leadership - He needs to be on the field.
(And doing more than barking orders)

Funny, When we missed him - All the media was on us and what he would have provided for us.
I've heard very little on what he's "providing" for the Sharks since....

Agree. They can connect with players well too
I beleive. We'll get the 'jobs for the boys' barbs
but Benji has assembled a good, young staff.
There will be no disconnect or communication
breakdown with this lot, they're still young and
ex-teammates. I don't mind it at all to be honest
The club has said they want to surround Benji with experience so I think they need 1 more experienced head in addition to Morris.

Plus reportedly certain guarantees were made to player managers around the time of the Fainu deals for more experience in the asst coaching ranks.

To me I think another announcement will come in the next month of a Farah move into the football admin dept & an experienced assistant coach (Sandercock has been linked) coming in. Standby.

For the real reason Furner is gone perhaps look at his recent record
2019 - Leeds sacked as head coach in less then 12 months
2020 - Knights assistant- gone within 12 months
2021/22 - Bulldogs assistant - 1 spoon, 0 Finals gone within 2 years
2023 - Spoon with Tigers gone within 12 months

That's a record even worse then Wests Tigers

It hasn't worked with coaches that are experienced campaigners most of whom were demonized by fans when they didn't get results and the one that ran got out as soon as he could. The coaches we think we need dont want a bar of us. At this point the club has to take what it can get just like the playing situation. The difference being no one wants to win more than coaches at any club, can't say that about the players and that's a far bigger problem.

So to remedy that - you’re suggesting we go with a pack of blokes with absolutely zero experience?

Totally agree. We need fresh ideas and different experiences in our coaching ranks. Don't mind John Morris but we are becoming in-bred. This will end badly ..... very badly, I fear.

I can’t agree totally , but understand what people may say , but Chris is a very good work hard type , yes another job for the boys but I think Chris is 100% worth a try , we will be a young coached basic experienced coached team , maybe be this is what we have been missing , EX players leading the way in a very changing game , so far Benji not long retired , Morris lead a team in the NRL and Chris with his work ethic and skill set may just be a new breath we need , plus a few new players coming in , Sezer , Sullivan , and the brothers , plus I suspect a few more players joining us , look out 2024 , times are changing for the better
From memory Heighno has an elite athletes coaching business and has helped some good up and coming surfers develop. I understand it’s not League but he Clearly has a solid understanding of the game from his career so may deliver something different to what we’re used to 🤷🏻‍♂️

People on here were having brain explosions about our lack of defence this year. Furner was our defensive coach so he didn't do the job. He's gone. No biggy. We have Morris coming and Farrar still here. What's the problem?

Didn’t we have Gardiner and Webster as assistants last year when we won the spoon? They’re both going alright at Penrith and NZ, both top 4 and in prelims this year. Maybe the issue isn’t the assistants

Just make Twal our D coach. One on one tackling before you can make the first grade side. Only issue we will need 30 new players. 🤣

Such a great signing. None of this was brought up last year.

Who said it was a remedy? The position we are in is because of years of failure. We tried to get the "it" coach of the moment after sacking a premiership coach - who plenty on here came to the conclusion couldn't coach - and now we find ourselves in a position where the only contenders are those that give a crap about the club. Sure as hell not going to put the boot in for that. Their results will determine their fate just like it has for the likes of plenty of "experienced" coaches who have been booted from other clubs on the back of poor on field performances.
