David Kidwell > Warriors??

Kidwell has been an unsung hero for us so far this season. He has seemingly fired up the forwards and is doing a great job toughening us up in attack and defence.

But with Elliott getting booted rumours have already started that the Warriors could be looking at Kidwell becoming their new coach. This would be a tragedy for us. Just as we're building some momentum and are finally looking like a team with a plan.

I'm not usually one to spread rumours, but the NZ players had previously stated he was their preference before Elliot got the gig, so the rumour could have some substance. Clubs rarely stand in the way if an assistant is offered a head coaching role, but we really need to look at doing whatever we can to keep him here.

I don't think so. I thought it was Iro the players wanted. Besides given their record with coaches, I couldn't see someone that hasn't been a head coach wanting to take the role on. It could be suicidal for their career.

No we shouldn't. No club should stand in the way of one of its assistant coaches taking up a head coaching position elsewhere. Especially when its their first crack.

Here's the article from SMH.

David Kidwell has emerged as a front-runner to replace Matthew Elliott as coach of the New Zealand Warriors.
>
Kidwell, an assistant to Mick Potter at Wests Tigers, was on the shortlist for the Warriors role after Brian McClennan was punted in late 2011\. However, the former Kiwi international pulled out of negotiations after they dragged on past that year's grand final where Kidwell was involved with the victorious Melbourne team.
>
Elliott wasn't even on the radar of the trans-Tasman club at the time but requested an interview, where he convinced powerbrokers he was the man for the job. However, he was sacked just five rounds into the season and Kidwell has again emerged on the Auckland team's radar.
"Contact has been made and we'd be silly not to look at all our options," said Kidwell's manager, Daniel O'Loughlin. "David is really enjoying his role at Wests Tigers and is grateful for the opportunity. He is ambitious and is a head coach in waiting and we'll look at any opportunities that may arise.
>
"We respect the fact the Warriors have a very capable person doing the job now in Andrew McFadden and they need to support him, so we'll let the process take its place."
>
Former Dragons mentor Nathan Brown was touted as a potential successor to Elliott but has indicated he is happy to remain with Super League club St Helens. It is understood Wigan coach Shaun Wane, who is close friends with Warriors football operations general manager Dean Bell, was sounded out about the role last year. However, it's unclear whether he has any interest in a job in which four coaches have been churned through in as many years. McFadden will see out the remainder of the season but would need to turn the fortunes of the trans-Tasman club around significantly to go from caretaker to permanent coach.
>
Kidwell, who enjoyed stints at Parramatta, Adelaide, the Roosters, Melbourne and South Sydney during a playing career in which he also represented New Zealand on 25 occasions, joined the Tigers staff in the off-season as a replacement for Steve Georgallis. The 36-year-old cut his coaching teeth under Craig Bellamy at the Storm.
>
In an interview with Fairfax Media last year, Bellamy predicted that Kidwell would go on to have a long and successful career as a head coach. "Without a doubt," Bellamy said. "He's only a young guy, Kiddy. I think he only had the one year coaching the Under-20s and he's come on to be my assistant. He's been there for three years. He's only a young coach but he's got a big future in the game. He obviously had a successful career. It doesn't mean you have to be a great NRL player to be a good coach, but that experience certainly helps. It helps you understand what players go through at times."

thanks for posting that BB.

he seems the perfect candidate for mine. i hope he doesnt go there though, as i think his influence has been pivotal in the tigers turnaround this year.

That would be devestating if he took the job… though you cannot hold it against him if he goes, getting the foot in the door as a Head coach isnt an opportunity that pops up too often.

he'll stay. at least for this year, probably next too.

he said no last time, dont see why he'd skip country this time and leave his friends/family in sydney to go to auckland. (and yes i know he's a kiwi)

It's poor business to let a valuable employee just walk out, especially if he is a key part to our successful start to the year. The management is not doing their job if they don't sit him down and ask him what they can do to keep him. If they can't meet what he wants then they can let him go.

didn't he sign a 2 year contract? it wouldn't be unethical or unprofessional of the club to keep him here for 2 years should he ask for a release.

and from what i've heard of kidwell, he doesn't seem like one to dishonour contract. it's ok for him to ask for a release but im sure he wouldn't chuck a hissy fit if we don't let him go.

Kidwell has obviously been good for us , but he has put various plans into place that another defensive coach could follow through on

If he is offered a head coaching role we shouldn't stand in his way

In a sense it a good thing if people are being promoted through the club onwards , means we are obviously doing something right for once personnel wise

But as GNR said the players want Tony Iro

Iro was the coach the players all wanted before Elliott got the gig not Kidwell, although his name was thrown about. Also I would imagine he would have a get out of jail clause in his contract if he was offered a head coaching gig. From all the media I have read on the subject, they are talking 2015, so we would have his services for the remainder of 2014, so really I dont see a problem. Also if our season continues the way it has, it would not be hard to lure another assistant coach.

Ivan Cleary is the only coach in the Warriors history to leave with his head intact, leaving the Warriors in good shape after their GF appearence and their lower grades overflowing with young talent. 6 or 7 others felled to the Warrior's AXE! No doubt Kidwell would have that in the back of his mind. The Melbourne Storm style of coaching/structures Kidwell has brought to the Tigers has added steel & a no nonsence attitude to a once brittle defensive line, we have always had attacking flair but DEFENCE is why we bought him, and the boys really respect him and have taken to him since day one.
It's only early days but winning breeds success and with that comes the one thing the really good clubs like Melbourne & Manly have ….."CULTURE", and if we keep winning i personally think Kidwell wouldn't just up and leave until CULTURE is established in Tiger town!!

That's all well and good, but it's still an opportunity for him to be the first to lead them to real success with a GF win. With a basket case like the Warriors, it'd be a very credible achievement to have on your CV.

Like I said, I hope the club does everything they can to keep him, but if he still wants to go they shouldn't stand in his way. I must say he does seem to get the best out of the Polynesian boys, maybe that's what the Warriors need.

I hear Roycie has been sharpening his coaching skills for a comeback… Saw him coaching the u 8's last weekend out Penriff way... Sadly his team got belted 48-0 ...

For Roycie

It would be a big call for the Warriors to put Kidwell in charge of their operation without having been a head coach beforehand. But they are definitely able to make those decisions that are outside the box. And perhaps he came to the club thinking that Potter could get the axe which would put him into pole position to take over here, which now seems unlikely.

But if he does sign with the Warriors he'd likely stay for this year which may be long enough for him to build the foundations for his work to continue after he leaves.
