'De Goyce' and 'Cost-Jason'

I am so incredibly glad I don't have to hear commentators murder these names anymore. That is the thing I will miss the least about the NRL season.

Are you expecting every commentator to be schooled on the correct pronunciation of the Romanised form of players names prior to every season?

I once heard Ray Warren berate the pronounciation of "Sven Otke" saying it's 'Otker' not 'Otkie' so yes, I do.

Also they make an effort with the Pacific names, they could at least get the European ones right too.

Depends on how the names are written.

For example, I've heard people refer to "Rudolf Hess" as "Rudolf Hob" because of the German language.

well those people are just stupid because Germans have very strict rules on pronounciation and 'ess' is always pronounced 'ess'. it couldn't possibly be 'hob' unless he's not actually german

But this "β" means "ss".

I know this Suze  I don't know if others do though, and they could be forgiven for thinking the beta symbol is a german interpretation of the letter "B."

It's about the only thing I remember from Year 7 german classes!!! :roll

I did German too, and I'm afraid that's about all I remember also

if i saw it written as above id assume Hob.

Im also unsure of the correct pronunciation of De Gois and Kostjasyn.

by the same token, if someone mispronounces or misspells my name, who cares

Forget the pronunciations lets just get the NRL to deregister both players and gets some more Browns ,Smiths and Jones to stop the rot (or is that Smyth ??)
Where is Billy Birmingham when you need him

i used to think it was "De-GWA" as in the correct french pronunciation - the rabs comes along and murders it for me.

as for KOSTJASYN - I had a Polish mate who told me "j's" are hardly ever pronounced in the middle of words - more a CHA sound - kinda like the silent g in Nguyen.

so KOS-CHA-SYN perhaps…

Well actually I thought De Gois may have been Dutch and with some Dutch names the Gois phonetics becomes almost a H sound Like De Hois but who knows
I mentioned Billy Birmingham but maybe we need Richie Benaud 😱pen_mouth:

De Gois is Portuguese, and I'm almost certain that Kostjasyn is Russian.

Well your Nguyen example highlights the problem which is transliterating foreign words into English (or even Australian English). My Vietnamese friends tell me that Nguyen is pronounced something close to "win" in Vietnamese but is more commonly pronounced in this country as something like "New-en". In most cases it is the people actually called Nguyen, especially those who grew up in Australia, who choose the latter, technically incorrect, pronounciation.

Now Rabs being Rabs, I'm pretty sure he or someone under his orders would have asked De Gois and Kostjasyn how they want their names pronounced. I'm sure we've all heard him bang on about how guys like Chris Houston (Howston not Hewston) and others prefer to have their names pronounced. And even if he didn't I find it hard to believe someone linked to De Gois and Kostjasyn wouldn't have got in contact with the media.

I seem to remember one club (maybe the Roosters?) putting out a press release/video with the correct pronounciations on their players' names. Maybe the NRL could do the same with the Top 25 players for each club and anyone new could have an update provided.

I agree but then you get the clowns who purposely come up with a new pronunciation for there name ie Teo or people then saying that you call them by a particular name (Cam or Cameron Smith )

To be fair a lot of names have been anglicised over time, and there's little more grating in commentary than listening to a pundit who really rates himself massively over-pronouncing names. I had years listening to renowned smug twat Barry Davies do exactly that in English football matches, and I still get furious when I remember the way he used to add an imaginary syllable to the surname "Solskjaer" (he said it like "Sol-shar-uh"). My dear mother, bless her, is a very proud (non-native) Italian speaker and I spent years convincing her that she sounds like an idiot when she insists on saying, for instance, Sylvester "Stallonay". Then she came to Australia and decided that a proper Scot would say Macquarie like "Mackairey", which nearly resulted in a total breakdown in family relations.

So anyway, even if it's wrong I for one am glad we don't have to hear "De Gwa".

I'm looking forward to hearing Rabs pronounce this kid's name from the Australian Schooboys team if he gets into the NRL

Matiu Fukofuka

"And charging on the ball is Fukofuka!"
