Death of the quick tap

Tonight twice we have seen NZ try to take a quick tap and the refs say no as they get into position. I've seen this happen a few times over the past year or two to benji, and I'm sure it happens to other players as well. When the refs allow it often we see a great exciting run and even a few trys as benji has shown us, and at least keeps the game speed up.

My question is, with modern day refs, and how rarely they let a quick tap happen, do you think we are seeing the death of the quick tap??

It feels like the refs think they are God, and everyone can just wait until they're in position. They need to remember that no-one is there to watch them, and that if they do their job properly, they shouldn't be noticed.

I agree, I think we are seeing the death of the quick tap, I'm no rule book guru but my understanding is that once the mark is indicated by the ref then off you go, often you see them mark it then when the player goes for the quick tap they pull it up until they are ready. I think part of the problem and once again I'm no expert, is the two ref system, they hold it all up till both refs are ready.

worked for Benji a few weeks ago - but I think that was because everyone was so surprised that the refs let it go..

quick taps were always a great way to capitalise upon a grubby penalty by the last man in defence. if it disappears, u will see players risk stripping the ball etc.

There is more beauracratic redtape and rules in the game than in POLITICS…,
A league for me next year.... Tell me off but thats where fans are going, our culture is to have a free flowing game to watch not ghis F$&@N NFL like Bull$&@".

A Penalty Tap/Kick is classed as a restart of play… In one scenario I saw, there were still Kiwi players in-front of the position the penalty was awarded.

Under the rules, if the restart is taken with your own players off-side, it is actually a penalty against the offending team. [Its the same for a kick-off and goal line drop out.]

It's also in the rules that you can't pass the ball before taking a quick restart, meaning the player that re-gathers the ball must be the one to tap it. One of the kiwis attempted quick starts that I saw was when JWH quickly passed it to Isaac Luke but the ref saw.

You are allowed to pass the ball before a quick tap and anyone who is onside can take the tap, not only the person who re-gathers the ball. If the ball is passed though the ref has to deem the pass to be a "short" one and not a "long" one. So basically it is ref's discretion and that equals a ridiculous and farcical situation re: quick taps.

With the NZ v Australia game there was only one referee so he has to give the mark and then go back ten metres

With NRL games again he has to give the mark ,make sure the attacking teams players are on side and time also has to be called on in various situations

22 taps only the player who retrieve's the ball can take the tap , he cannot pass it to someone else standing on the 22 and the other above rules apply

Quick taps are still allowed , look at the Benji Marshall try v Parra ,you just need to follow the rules first

Witnessed a great try in the u20's origin when Cuthbertson returned the ball to the 20 and quick-tapped, caught all the QLD defenders napping and it lead to a try.

When the ref replies "I wasn't ready". Drives me mental. If the players can get onside, so should the bloody ref.
