Despite all that promise, Benji Marshall's lost his way

How many players have ever produced over 30 try assists in a season, **playing most of it out of position** and had people saying they had a poor season? Play Benji at 5/8 paired up with an organising halfback who is first grade standard and he will win plenty of games, but when he has to organise the attack himself he struggles.

Maybe that is why he produced so many try-assists… I wonder how many he wouldve created playing at 6???

Was still producing plenty in 2011 and 2010 when he played 6, and didn't have to worry about directing the team around, which he struggles to do.

Telegraph basically uses forum discussions and innuendo for articles now right?

That's one source, they mainly rely on facebook and twitter, as well as parroting talkback radio, with some mob hysteria and easy answers to complex problems thrown in. Serve with a side of disingenuously re contextualised quotes and photos and give a few neo fascists some editorial space you've got an issue of the Tele.

Benji has been ordinary most of his career. We can have the greatest coach ever and it won't matter because Benji is Benji. Until he leaves the club or retires, our football team won't change. Sad but true.

Yeah he had an average year compared to prior. Still had most try assists and publicly said he was trying to become a more consistent player. Probably didn't have his head on him in Townsville, too busy like the rest of us trying to work out the next coach.

He'll be right next year. A fresh start with a coach that will have a halfback permanently next to him so he can get back to attacking footy again.

Oh, and Rothfield is clearly a twit and has nothing else to write about, whether he is right or wrong…

IMHO, Marshall was and still is one of the best players in the game.
In 2012 he was not his brilliant best, but he carried WT on his shoulders for quite a few seasons.

What planet do some of you guys live on? I have been watching the Tigers for 40 years
and Benji is probably the most exciting player that has ever played for us. He is without doubt the best 5/8 I have seen play for the Tigers. He has done things on the football field that only a very few players could match. Are you the same guys who kept deriding Lui the past few years? Look what happened when he went, no organisational skills inside Benji, no long kicking game, more pressure on Benji. He played most of the year out of position, less space to move, tried to become more of an organiser, yet still led the stats for almost everything. When he has a quiet game, we don't score points. He has brought in a whole new generation of fans, more sponsors and more publicity. Get a good halfback inside of him (hopefully Anasta will play there next year), we will be in the finals again. Rarely read such utter stupidity.

Agree, Dunno about Anasta though.

stupidity = acknowledging his game is off beat because he doesn't have an organising half inside him, then calling everyone else stupid for suggesting he is not in form..

no one here is arguing he is not exciting to watch, he has raw talent unseen to us before… when in form, he is a freak and probably the favourite player for alot of us here... however right now he is not in form, he has been in a slump... in 2010 i thought he was close to clicking.. the kicking game was improving and a metre or two off on numerous occassions to turning into scoring opportunities, however the results were kicks going out on the full or rolling dead... passess were still being thrown out on the full and often the attack was still very un organised... in the 2010 final against st george he practically blew the game for us by making a rookie error (i cant remember if it was running it on the 5th or kicking it out on the full)... the dragons ended up with the ball close to half way and went on to kick a field goal at the end of the set. but to be a successful five eight or half, let alone in the top 20 forrm players of the game... he has to get this stuff right...

again i'll repeat, before the stats men and women get here, stats only paint part of the picture, they dont tell us how many balls he trew that went out on the full, how many rubbish kicks he put in, how many bad decisions he made as a leader in the halves... they only support the times that came off for him, which in itself shows how much potential is currently being wasted... imagine how many assists/line breaks he would have if he could get his freakin game together!

i love the kid, but rothfield is right.. the topic is right.. benji lost his way... i hope he can get it back...

But if you compare all the touches he had to try assists and add the errors in his figures it doesn't put him any higher than middle of the road

He is below the elite of the game on current form and if he can't improve his running game his best days are behind him

At the very height of his powers he was never in the class of a Lockyer,Thurston,Cronk,Lyons to name a few. Its always been rocks and diamonds and Iam afraid the rocks are more common than the diamonds.

Dont get me wrong, I love going to watch him play but he is never going to control a game from start to finish like a lockyer or Thurston. Maybe with Anasta at the club he will improve, who knows

When I watch other teams, I wish Benji was more consistent. Sure, he's the centre of our attack with thirty try assists and his conversion rate has improved a heck of a lot in the last couple of years but….
- his kicks in play can be magic or junk and I would rather they gave the ball to Fulton for bombs
- once Robbie was out this year, we were gone because Benji couldn't lead the team

I reckon he controls the game pretty well considering the quality of his partners plus he does the freaky passes that get koroibete, moltzen and others across the line. Passes that lockyer or thurston couldnt even dream of doing. Those who say they want him to go are being controversial. If he's playing bad at WT then who's playing good ? If you say woods I could answer "oh yeah there was this one time when he caused a penalty and there was this one time he dropped the ball" if you say koroibete I could say "yeah he tripped on his own". Give us some rational behind what you're saying. "the rocks are more common than the diamonds"…would you care to elaborate ?

Step one is to take the half-back responsibilities off him.

Getting him running wider and in open space, chiming into the game when he sees an opportunity and not having him handling the ball in EVERY SET.

Absolutely agree with this. This season the default was "just pass it to Benji"..even when there was no space and he was marked. A full season with Robbie and a stable partner for BM will do wonders for us.

It should be Miller to partner him as the #7\. Miller also has good combinations with the younger players like Koroibete and has the kicking game as well.

Fatty mentioned this on the Footy show early in the season when they had a series of losses,he also said they have to restructure their attack as every team knows Benji is going to get the ball.Fatty doesn't have a great football brain and is known for stating the bleeding obvious("I think i'm dead" will be on his Gravestone) but Sheens did nothing to change this all season.
As already stated he needs a Scott Prince type half back to take the pressure off in attack and give the Team more options but this is more easy said than done as Parra. found out.

Superbly written, and although he is a veteran now and should be getting better now rather than the year he had. It was the one season, and he didn't exactly have a awful season. Just not Benji like.
