Do Maggies Fans Remember.....

And I saw a post mentioning Neil Pringle…...i remember him flying off many a short ball by Brian Lockwood many a time at Leichhardt and bringing the crowd to its feet....

Pringle told Wayne Pearce to make sure you roll the players a couple of times when you tackle them on the grand stand side. Pearce asked was it because you could slow the play down or get them in to touch? Pringle said no, it's so the spectators can see the number on the back of who made the tackle!

I don't remember him i do remember spending my 50 cent pocket money on that black and white mag the sold at lidcombe oval to save the club it was about three or pages long and i would read it so my dear old pop knew i was a fan….

Tony Ford was virtually bashed out of the game in the early 70s, suffering a series of concussions as a result of stiff-arm tackles. In one televised game against East at Lidcombe Oval he was making a stepping run up the middle of the field when Alan McKean smashed him with the worst stiff-arm I ever saw. Immediate send-off. Tony was never really the same after that, and the emergence of John Dorahy saw him finish up in 1974.

In 1978, Tony Ford, was the coach of the footy team I played in.
Under 14 B grade comp, for Holy Cross College, Ryde.
I played fullback, and he was a very good mentor. Gave advise from his playing time, and all the team looked up to him. He was a great coach, and taught us all a lot, about good sportsmanship, and that regardless of your ability, when it was your turn to be a reserve, he would not tolerate any hissy fits.We had great team morale. We were lucky enough to win the comp that year 6-5, yep by a field goal in the last two minutes, game played at leichhardt oval.

last year at a school get together, caught up with some of the other blokes, who were in that team. We all agreed, yes, whilst it was nice to win, we had a very enjoyable season, and to this day hold Tony Ford, in great esteem and very fond memories.

I would like to get in contact with him, and thank him for what he did , not only for me, but the entire team. :master:

I saw Alan McKean referee a match at Lidcombe Oval in 1984 between Wests and Easts on a freezing cold and wet day. They put up 1300 as the crowd but i reckon it was more like 500\. McKean disallowed three Wests tries and the penalty count was about 12-3 Easts …...... most biased display of referring I've ever seen. A bloke name Paul Dunn who I used to work with played that day and i asked him on Monday how much did you's pay the ref ........... he just smiled and walked away. :imp:
