Do we have the best backline in the game?

If you're smart, you just sign him from yr to yr at this stage

completely agree

but i mean, if willie mason can go alright at 34 in the forwards, i reckon patty might have another year in him after playing for so long in the ESL.

Pat had some great defensive reads. The Dogs had an overlap a couple of times. Patty came off his wing and got in between their centres and winger to shut down the dogs backline movements.

Lote was the same age as Richards in 2010 and had the best yr a winger has ever had for the club since the JV was formed imo. He was universally loved by all Wests fans, then the next yr he was public enemy no 1\. Atm Richards is in the same position Lote was in 2010, and rightfully so, but this time next yr if he's still playing, the majority of people could be saying he should have retired at the end of 2015\. Supporters are fickle, it doesn't take much for them to turn on you and forget all the good you've done. They only care about what you do for them today, not yesterday. Just ask Chris Lawrence.

lote was 30 years old at that time, and unlike patty has played NRL/Super rugby all his career. also he doesnt have a kicking game.

he got back to somewhere near there with souths last year and won another GF at 35\. so i think there is a spot for a 33 or 34 year old winger whos reasonably healthy and kicks like patty does.

but yeah, 1 year contracts only for sure.

The interview after the game it stated hotter played well but they aren't sold on that yet.. I'm thinking initially he wanted noffa instead of hotter but injuries prevented this. If say hoetet is still no certainty.

I tell ya the liability is going great guns.

Career best IMO.

How about that goal from 53 out on half time???

Loving the liability!

I'm one of the posters who didn't rate him and he is making me eat my words. I'm still not sold but geez he is going good.

Sue is in the same boat. I thought he had to be dropped but from the second round he has been killing it.

It's a solid backline with decent talent. The thing is, the forward pack dominated Canterbury and when you win the ruck you give your halves the time and space they need to set up the outside backs, and last night was an example of what the team can achieve when they play for the full 80 minutes.

saw that a few times.. it's a dangerous play. they could've easily kicked behind which they luckily didnt.

simona, teddy and brooks scrambled really well to cover whenever they got outside of richards (not necessarily his fault as he just follows the center)

I'm sorry I can' t keep up with the wild swings in comments.

Does anyone think what they are writing or is it all just raw emotion.

As some one said "wooden spooners" to top four team in one week; half the team was dropped last week, most are champions this week. "Is this the best backline in the comp?" - Get a little bit serious. Love the team, love the players but best backline!

Maybe in the future - no where near it at the moment. Lets just settle on a backline to start with, then give them time to gel and we may have a better indication next year.

Why would you get rid of Richards? (apart from being a liability someone once said).
Age has nothing to do with it - it is form that should be the only consideration. He is going really well as a player; goal kicking and kick offs etc. are a bonus.

Delouise did well in that game but still a work in progress. Nofo - well can he force his way into the "Best backline in the comp?" - is he becoming injury prone (Teddy was with a few unlucky injuries). I wouldn't want to get rid of Richards just to make a spot for Nofo. He needs to come back in the lower grade and earn his spot back and not just be handed it back on a plate.

Good post Russell. I would love to see Pat stay a bit longer and agree that Nofo has to earn a spot back in to the team, through good form. As for our backline, it will be one of the best, in a few years time. :sign:

If I was Pat I would be looking into trialing for an NFL contract, he could possibly play as a punter and kicker for another 5-6 years and earn around the million $ mark.

This thread is a good example of how people can get carried away with a win.

Yep. This thread is a bit embarrassing for the forum. Admittedly Milky acknowledged he might be getting carried away.

Tigerdon you are right about Richards coming in off the line and stopping the movement - yep it is dangerous and you have to be sure of what you are doing. He has the experience - if it doesn't work it is a try, if he doesn't do it - it would be a try anyway. Correct decisions, and you don't see too many wingers making correct decisions these days.
I saw that scramble from Simona, Teddy and Brooks as well Tig_prmz. You left one out though. A couple of times I saw us being caught short out wide - only to see a little guy by the name of Mitchell Moses flash across the back of the line to fill the gap. He can certainly read the play before others even start to think.

Also on Mitchell - looking at the dressing room shots after the game. There were a few screens showing Marty and Mitchell without the jerseys on. Considering Moses has people built like Marty running at him all game and the size of Mitchell himself - he is as game as. I was sorry to see no one was there to help with Pritchard one on one with Moses a metre from the line. He had no chance of stopping Frank but was clever enough to try and wrap up the ball but couldn't quite manage it. I have seen him do it before as players go over the line though.

This is not a whinge - I noticed in both the Warriors and the Canberra games that the opposition were allowed a very, very skinny 10 metres. This hampers your attack to the point that as soon as you receive the ball, your opposite number is standing in front of you. I'm sure this will continue throughout the season so it needs to be overcome. If our forwards dominate this helps immensely as in the Dogs game and maybe if the backline stand a little deeper when they are in the red zone we can negate the referees inability to look along the line.

No we don't have the best backline

But at least it is heading in the right direction and we have more options to choose from than last season

Competition for positions is a good thing and will lead to further improvement across the board

Well spotted Russell, as people watch a game differently, with some only seeing the headline moments and/or the ball in motion, thus not appreciating the input of some. Even when they scored down our right wing, Moses might have missed the winger, but he put himself in a position to attempt it. Throwing the pass for Pat's late try on the other side of the field just another example of his vision when allowed. Sirro does a lot off the ball in defensive line to force changes that goes unheralded as well.

As far as Taupau goes, I really enjoyed his attack the other night and he was very effective despite the lack of breaks. Wanting to find his front and thus not getting dominated at all, and the subsequent quicker play the ball against their big pack worked a treat.

You're completely right about Moses defending alone on the line. It was Lawrence's fault because he followed hodkinson I think instead of staying on the line with Moses. However, it was his first game defending inside the half instead of outside him which could've caused this lapse of judgement.

Moses didn't cover on pattys side but he did scramble well on arona.

The team that we have here are all footballers. Most of them are not the best athletes but they run hard, hit hard, scramble well and have a great sense of footy.

If jt can keep us in the top 8 for a couple of seasons- these kids will want to play their careers together.

I don't see how it was Lawrence fault? Ava looked so lost on the inside of Mitchell.
