Does Tim Sheens Deserve A Contract Extension?

No I wouldnt extend past 2011.

Lets see how he goes next year.

Im semi interested to see what another coach would do with Farah and Marshall. I also cant help but feel Sheens made a few crucial mistakes in the finals. I.E - pretty much playing with 15 players in games where our whole side was out on their feet. Have a look at the teams left and they get 100% value out of there bench

I don't understand why we would extend his contract by more than one year at the moment. We already have him for 2011 and we don't know what will happen next year. Why commit ourselves to such a large contract? We did have a good year and IMO Sheens does deserve an extension but an extension until the end of 2012 is enough for now I reckon. If we make the finals again next year then maybe extend his contract by another 1 year in the offseason after next season. I hate ridiculously large contracts.

So we were dumb to sign Benji till 2015…Farah, Galloway, Gibbs till 2013...What about Lawrence should we sign him a year at a time?

Do you understand 2\. 3\. and 5 year plans?

Look at clubs like Parra and the Broncos so much speculation over their coaches....I would rather Wests Tigers have stability...with solid plans for moving forward..

Wonder if you would've felt this if we won?

Yeah I understand it. It would be a 2 year plan if we extend his contract until the end of 2012\. Some people have short memories - we didn't make the finals for 4 years in a row when we did have a pretty good squad those years. We went very well this year, especially with the injuries we had, so I don't have a problem with them extending Sheens' contract 1 year. If we go well next year then they could extend his contract again in the next offseason. If we missed the finals this year (which would have been the 5th year in a row) then you would still be saying "sign him for life" which is just wrong. This year Sheens knew he had to get the team into the finals to get a contract extention and it worked.

i voted 3 years - thank you Mr. Sheens - so proud of my team tonight

x 2, i reckon this group of young guys mixed with the experienced heads will only be better next year and with folkes as sheens right hand man things are looking good.

would not swap sheens for that over-rated coach bennett. still remember those young tigers of 05 tearing apart the best team that money could buy, the broncos, in the finals and supercoach bennett having no answers.

time for a tigers dynasty

Awwww man, I've just found my new favourite website! Why haven't I found this thing before????
For my first ever post (on anything) I've gone for a one year extension for Sheens, I just think he deserves a couple more years with this current playing roster, unless he doesn't want it I suppose.
I also don't think we should under-estimate Folkes's impact on the club this year. Roycey's gone, Folks has indicated he'd like to get back into coaching oneday…......

i would sign him til the end of 2012.

that's when the majority of our current roster come off contract, so it makes sense. i think this will be waht happens too

Good to see some of you have changed your mines, give the man as long as he wants, remember he took over when we were rabble & brought through these young guys. i think him & his staff have done a great job & with folkes there they will work as a great team.

Welcome aboard Deano! I thought Folkes had pretty much said the opposite - that he's not really interested in being a head coach at the moment. But yeah I think it's made a huge difference having Folkes on the staff.

 that reminds me of my first time. oh the delight
after who knows how many months/years(?) i finally noticed a link to the forums on the old official tigers site. I couldn't have discovered it at any better time i think - just at the start of the 8 game streak in '05.
oh the lovin', i don't think i read one negative post until '06 came around.

on topic - as some some have said "where's the 'as long as he wants' option"? i love the way we play, & there is no doubt he is a good coach as other coach's admit to being out coached by him.

having said that i have occasionally wondered what benji & co would be like under someone else, but the risk of losing what we have is too great in my eye's.

I'd only keep him till the end of his current contract - end of 2011.
Absolutely nothing against the man. He got us a premiership in 05.
But, I reckon everyone needs a change and end of next season seems perfect. I don't think it is beneficial for any player to have one coach their entire careers. I feel as individuals and as a team we would develop and grow stronger under a change of coach. Everyone needs a change now and then.

My sentinments exactly PP. I think a new coach would be a breath of fresh air. I'm happy for Sheens to move into another role in the club, working with juniors maybe? but I think he's had the reins long enough.

And yes, I still would have been saying this even if we'd made/won the GF.

Seriously though…his results have changed....so my opinion may change.
Who could argue against a season weve just seen?

No one can argue against a season we just seen…......but does that mean we jump in and extend him when he's already here next year?

No - I didnt say that.
A decision which way we will be going re head coach should be made soon though…I see a replacement internally, when? - thats the $64 Q

"Stability","continuity","consistency" blah blah are all great & admirable traits well worth pursuing..so long as yr getting results & therefore have a credidble & positive platform to build upon.
The past 4 years in a deep dark hole missing the semis doesnt exactly equate to that description,so forgive us folk who wld like the coach to actually be accountable for his results before we sign him up for life as some of the folks on this panel wld suggest.
He's done a credible job this year no doubt(albeit with some obvious flaws..well obvious too all but Sheens),but he did so in 05 too …Id like to see some consistency & stability in his results before we sign him long term
Id like a job where I only had to perform once every 5 years,so heres hoping he can deliver next year

As a coach I reckon sheens is real good. He always speaks well, the players seem to like him and typically the players don't bring the club into disrepute.

As a selector he can be a dunce.

I voted to extend his contract because of the +ves.

Well I spose each person measures succees and non performance differently and I guess the same can be said for mediocrity….Personally I believe the only true sucessful season is a Premiership afterall that's what the play for isn't it ...I'm also a realist and think that that can't happen every year....So is it the semi's as a benchmark or is it once you get there you give it a shake...or bow out in straight sets like the Panfers this year or Dragons last year..

So many factors come into it...level playing field....salary cap...injuries....ref's calls ...bounce of the ball...

I look at the Wests Tigers and Sheens Reign....He has given the club a Premiership and come within a hatr on a Baboon's butt of getting a shot at a 2nd in six years.I don't count 03..I look at where we have come from ...to where we are heading ...not a bad strike rate even given the failures of 06, 07, 08 and 09....Even then I would argure only 07 was a true failure in terms of a very poor final game when the final 8 was there to be taken..

I have said he should have went in 07 but in the infinite wisdom the Wests Tigers board granted his extenton...since then he has cut the deadwood brought class in Ellis and Lortay to the club as well as keeping the nucleas of '05 together in Marshall, Farah, Gibbs, Fulton, Payten and Heighington...as well as bringing on youth better than most in the NRL...

Sheens has built this team...players are starting to extend beyond 2011 that tells me something...IMO he desreves the opportunity to see how far he can take it.....
